Miyagi (Rich Anti-socal loner girl) has complicated feelings toward our popular girl (MC).

I guess to Miyagi, Sendai (MC) is pretty much the closet person to a friend/best she actually has so far

Miyagi has friends. She's not a loner or an outcast.

She's just not in the "popular" caste.

Miyagi has trust issues and can't believe deep down that someone would be want to genuinely associate with her without an incentive (money) and Sendai, while tired by the weight of the mask she wears at all time, can't really drop it as it's become part of her.

Oh so she does have 'friends'...Sorry for my comment then lol XD~
I was basing my comment based on this manga solely instead of any LN/WN information and didn't see her talking with anyone besides Sendai (Though I did reread the chapter 1 and saw she was walking with a random mob character but never any dialog bubbles appearing).
I am assuming Miyagi friendship is at the casual level with her friend(s)??? Like casual chatting about everyday stuff but not at the level where they would be invite to hang out at home or hang out after school more than once per month type of deal...Though I could be wrong since I don't know the WN/LN details about Miyagi's relationship with her other friends??

Though I only call her a loner/outcast since she herself called herself the bottom of the social hierarchy/ An 'A second string' loser in her words in chapter 1...Her words not mine...Though I guess anyone would see themselves like that when comparing themselves to one of the higher popular students at the school XD

The bottom part of your comment is pretty much one of guesses and most people guesses(Or they knew already) too but good to know we have confirmation about Miyagi's inner thoughts and viewpoints about her current situation with Sendai. Thanks for the information and confirmation.

I cannot ascertain what’s going on through Miyagi’s head

The manga cutting a ton of the WN's internal monologue doesn't help. But even with the internal monologue, Miyagi is an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a mystery.

I think reading the web novel for this series before the manga could provide a deeper understanding of the story. While the manga already does a great job, the web novel adds more depth and helps reduce any confusion.
Edit: with how fast the manga is progressing compared to the WN (with 90+ chapters) I have a feeling this series won't be having many chapter.

No, the WN has around 360 chapters. 90ish is just where I'm at with my TLs, LOL.

Damn that many o_o

Not sure I'm down with the tag "Pay for gay" here, as the transaction between them has nothing to do with a romantic or sexual relationship, and in fact explicitly abjures one.

I mean, come on, you know the genre tropes. It's going to get gay in here.

Here's the page to Angela's translations (Seira further up in the thread), which are very high quality and go up to 90 out of 300+ chapters so far. No official translation as of yet so this is the best you can get (unless you wanna read minimally edited MTL which butchers all sorts of stuff). Updates are relatively common of which you can notifications if you join the Angela's discord server (#notaplug, it's fun over here!) of which you can find on the Wordpress.

Oh I know, but the gay isn't what's being paid for, is my point. Miyagi is paying Sendai to engage in good, Christian humiliation play, which could not under any circumstances lead to anything gay happening. Especially because they have rules to prevent anything gay from happening, and nobody would ever break a rule. So you see, nobody could be paying for gay here.

serious answer: A couple of girls with different forms of emotional damage, stumbling awkwardly into a kind of relationship with each other

lol I mean my answer was also serious, since the title is the general gist. It's a slow burn character drama focusing on a relationship born from one character buying another character as an excuse to spend time with them. We're learning more about these characters as they're learning more about each other, and so their relationship progresses from there.

I'm a manga only reader and I'm enjoying their unfolding dynamic so far.

Bruh, the manga just started, give it a little time to digest. It's still in its introduction phase and besides this is the kind of setting they'll be in for the most part in the entire series so you better just get used to it. There will be changes and often times those changes are subtle, there will be progress and when it happens it hits like a stray brick to the head.

I'm currently up to chapter 66 in the web novel and I can't tell you how much I couldn’t physically stop myself from reading. And it's even more amazing given that this is my first web/light novel and I've been very adamant on not reading LNs before.

What I'm saying is, give it time and be a little patient. Soon, it'll give you the kind of heart problems that you can welcome with open arms with how these two are just so fucking perfect for each other in a way that only makes sense if it's them together. Also because they're both so painfully unhinged to the point it's almost idiotic but also genius at the same time.

A bit of a tangent but, imho the art style (so far) doesn't suit or match the content and it might throw people off cuz as much as this looks like your regular slice of life yuri, and it technically is, it’s a bit more like a psychological yuri. There's lots of introspection, lots of self discovery, lots of mental illness, lots of unhingeness, lots of gayness, lots of horniness, etc. But tbh, I think this would be easy to fix once they get deeper into the chapters and draw the atmosphere a bit more thoroughly and seriously. This mostly affects Sendai's characterization but I'm hoping that they'll fix her overtly friendly look in the later chapters. Miyagi's characterization is almost perfect, I mean, that's literally the Miyagi in my head.

I mean tbf when someone's like, "I'll pay you to hang out with me"

And your response is, "I won't have sex with you! I'm definitely not into girls! NO HOMO!!"

That by itself is uh... Pretty gay. When girl-on-girl is the first thing you think of you might be a liiiittle more Sapphic then you're willing to admit.
