lmaooooo slender man

Also I've actually heard empowering rhetoric like this before. Embracing the hatred, the othering, directed at you by shitty people judging you for standing out compared to their normalcy. It's why so many of us love characters intended to be villains, like Ursula from The Little Mermaid (or the characters in this manga hahaha)

By the way: pineapple on pizza is fantastic, one of the best pizza toppings. you just gotta dice it instead of throwing big rough chunks on there, you want an even distribution of pineapple flavor. It's a similar concept to any combination of tangy and salty, like glazed ham or maple turkey.

I think it's not really about taste to me, I just don't like the idea of any fruit on pizza. Maybe because it's damp, or too sweet, not sure.

If you pre-roast the pineapple chunks it takes care of the dampness and excessive sweetness and neutralizes the enzymes that cause issues with the cheese and crust.

Some people definitely don't like tomato sauce either for some reason. I have a friend who hates pizza unless it's made with white sauce, but she actually makes an exception for Hawaiian pizza lol

Yeah people have all different kinds of preferences, and so you get various unique kinds of pizza. lol that's interesting that an exception gets made for Hawaiian pizza though, and for me I don't eat pork so I bounce off that kind

Mmmhhh right, I quite like this new monster.
But I sure fucking despise pineapple on my pizza... These are for the real monsters.
Also white sauce based pizza are amazing.
Thanks for the chapter!

Just so people don't get the wrong idea, the monster is saying they are LIKE Slender Man in appearance/size, not that they are.

Ah, yes the normality of not getting in each other's way...Sounds about right. As long as no one gets hurt, bullied or mocked for it for being slightly different then that normal is fine.
Yeah some people will admire those who are outspoken, unique and different while others will scold or think those people are weird and disrupting society.

I am fine with most types of pizza, mostly neutral about Pineapple pizza but eh as long it's not very spicy pizza then I can eat it.

MC is differently the unique type of different person that is not part of society's 'normal' (Her grandma is a fine example of saying fk the norms with her fashion sense lol)...Most normal people would scream and cry when being face with being killed but she went with cutting herself and threatening to damage her body so her monster friend can't use it...In fact most people won't even try to befriend a monster girl after seeing her kill someone XD

I love the irony of the "Yeah, I'm an evil monster!" doppelganger still being an improvement over the (at least attempted) rapist teacher as a person. Really reinforcing that theme of questioning the "normal / weird" arbitrary social dichotomy.

Also I like the shark teeth. Good ol' manic gremlin energy. Feeling envy.

As for food chat: Pineapple on pizza can be good if properly prepared. (As already mentioned, big soggy chunks are the opposite of properly prepared.) But I draw the line at people that replace tomato sauce with ranch dressing. That ceases to be pizza and becomes something else. (Though I admit bias because ranch dressing tastes gross to me. Didn't always, but I can't remember the last time it tasted good. Has to be decades ago at the earliest.)

Despite being a comedy manga, page 14 had a deep, thought-provoking moment that got me even more hooked.

I'm liking all this commentary on society, normality and capitalism basically and how it all turns Itou into a monster because it actually makes sense

Also pineapple pizza for the win

I mean it has its "comedic" moments but calling it a comedy manga is a heavy stretch imo

ah, so neurodivergent people are monsters, I understand now /s

I mean, when the spectrum only includes "Normality" and "Monsters" (please marvel at my title drop), that's basically how they're being seen by society. Remember, 99% of history had only one career perspective: Literal torture under the guise of therapy or exorcism. Don't shoot the messenger, I doubt the author endorses this line of thinking.

Just so people don't get the wrong idea, the monster is saying they are LIKE Slender Man in appearance/size, not that they are.

Pics or it didn't happen. We haven't seen the true form yet, and she's clearly capable of operating indoors. (Imagine Slendy climbing a tight stair case.)

I wouldn't call it too deep as that's basically "We live in a society" with extra steps, but yes, not exactly your usual gag manga.

I despise Pizza in all its forms for the tomatoes, and personally tend to tarte flambée for my topped flatbread of choice.

god this manga is good. That definition of normality is so interesting. i think any autistic or otherwise neurodivergent person has probably had to put a lot of thought into this question to survive, but for the most part you tend to end up, in my experience, with something resembling more a collection of behaviors and rules--something immediately practically applicable--than a unified theory of normalcy, which is also harder to come by. I'd have to sit on it to decide if I actually think it's correct, but the definition our friend here gave is a pretty good one, from this lens, that solves a lot of issues one might have coming up with a unified theory by essentially pointing to and describing that learning process and the social function it's trying to emulate.

It's interesting, it's useful, so I'd say it's a good definition. Might even be a correct one!

But I think the definition of a monster is what really makes it go, in this manga's context. Such a cool reframing of the ideas we've been grappling with so far. I wonder if being able to pass would then make you normal, or if having to pass only highlights the fact that you're a monster.

for the record, i'm pineapple-agnostic.

It's kind of a strange definition because there's lots of things that lead to social exclusion that don't get in anybody's way, most obviously homosexuality. If I had to define "normal" I'd phrase it essentially in a political manner, "the things, traits, and people valued by those with power over society". One of the ways gay people have grown in acceptance in America is by arguing we're a) only a little bit different from straight people, functional to society to most ways, and b) a valuable market demographic. And it sucks I hate my rights being contingent on some cishet in a suit thinking I can make him richer lol.

But Chameleonmon's definition is useful to themselves and their disguises, rather than being a unified theory. They can get the visual appearance right but don't well understand humans and are thus very imperfect at blending in socially. Their survival odds are directly tied to how homogeneous society is and how badly outcasts get cast out, so acting as an agent against normalcy is a survival strategy. Focusing their behaviors on "not getting in the way" makes sense for avoiding detection, and the people most likely to cause them problems are the people who really care about everyone being "normal".

Every autistic person has had to grapple with masking in some form or other for sure. Do it too much and it starts to feel like imposter syndrome for being person. Don’t do it enough and you’ll be isolated and infantilized. Sometimes it feels there’s no winning.
