Awwwww is like a dad and daughter working together and being collegues
More like an adult who considers his life choices a big mistake and desperately tries to scare a young person from repeating them.
Oh no she’s gonna become an outcast now
This series continues to be unlike any other manga I've read. Really enjoying every chapter.
Oh that mangaka was harsh in the way he treated Toda but I can see why he is acting that way. TBH I also really do like the fact that even though this manga deals with Adult content and he draws adult content, he doesn't seem to be a creep or a weirdo.

You might want to check out Asper Girl sometime. It's got a lot in common with this manga, but it's also got a bit of a darker more realistic edge to it, yet it is very much so still quite warm and fuzzy in a lot of ways just like this is. It's a slice-of-life manga with some light romance that follows the life of an ero mangaka who suffers from depression and a young woman on the autistic spectrum who moves in much like the MC from this manga.
Fair warning, although the overall feel of Aper Girl is positive and life-affirming it does not flinch from showing mental illness in a strikingly realistic light so there could be some triggering stuff for those who struggle with similar conditions. It's not some misery-driven aaaangst
parade, but it is also a story where the camera never flinches. It really is quite special.

I'll give it a look, but it might be too much for me. Warm and fuzzy is good. Is it on MangaDex? I couldn't find it.

It's one of those titles that is woefully underrated, but at the same time, I can see why it wouldn't be the sort of thing that will appeal to everyone. It's certainly not the sort of title I would recommend to most gung ho shonen-loving manga readers, but in a thread on Dynasty for "Ah... and Mm... Are All She Says" I think it has a far better chance of finding its audience. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a waste of your time, but worst-case scenario it'll cost you like 5 minutes of your life. One thing I can say for certain is the author is either on the spectrum or has loved someone who is.

So, is the friend crying supposed to be implication of one-sided feelings? Or is this a "my friend is drifting away" situation?

Thanks for the link!
It definitely won't be a waste of my time. Any manga with respectfully written disabled characters is worth checking out. When you are disabled, you don't often get to read manga with main characters who deal with the same things you do.

Thanks for the recommendation, but now I'm between a rock and a hard place.
All I wanted was to check if there was a lively discussion around the Manga that this thread is about and of which I've only read (and loved) three chapters so far, only to find a recommendation for another work that sounded intriguing and instantly proceded to captivate me
Asuperu Kanojo is pretty much what I expected from the title and I love/hate it for it, because it seems to be pretty well done. It's wowed me pretty hard so far. I take it the EN release is quite far behind?

Yeah, I believe the series is like 120ish chapters and complete in its original form. The English translation is at maybe 45 chapters last I checked. But it's still updating in English. It's not a dropped translation project.
Sorry, I kinda derailed this thread a little. I just thought the parallels between the two stories were strong and when it comes to niche works like these they can use all the exposure they can get in order to reach an audience that will appreciate them.

I can see very well why an adult man who works as a mangaka doesn't want to draw porn in front of a little girl... and will even hurt her with cruel words to chase her away.
It somebody notices and calls the police it won't be funny. :/

This is a hard derail but good lord. In the first 4 chapters, she slits her wrist, punts a dog because her parents used to put her in a dog cage, and really lays out how isolated she feels from society. Thanks for the recommendation.
well, i just finished what has been scanlated of asper girl.
i almost stopped really early on because some of it was too much for me, but overall i'm glad i stuck with it.
i have plenty of criticism about both specific details and the general theme, but there was a lot that felt genuine and that i related to in one way or another. the depiction of ptsd is particularly powerful (and painful).
i definitely prefer ah... and mm... because i feel like it's more subtle — the autism spectrum is broad, but at times it felt like saitou (from asper girl) was more of a caricature than a true representation of someone on the spectum.
that said i will continue to follow along with the scanlation releases and would recommend it to people who are brave of heart, and not triggered by self harm, suicide, abuse, animal abuse, rape, among other things...
it's definitely not a fun read, but there is probably something there for you if you are interested in this type of content and can handle how intense it is.

Damn you're fast. I've only managed to get 12 chapters down since last night, but so far it's been a fantastic experience to me. I've worked with a few clients with ASDs before and during my time studying psychology in university (no, I did not finish with a degree, sadly) and I agree that Saitou does at times feel a bit cliché, but then again: so did the 16 year old Asperger's kid I worked with for ten months, even if he was completely different from Saitou or the other ASD-cases I met afterwards. An important takeaway from those experiences for me, however, was to not discount an ASD-case because it was either too typical or untypical, because as you say: it's a broad spectrum.
Ah.. and Mm... seems more subtle indeed, but my attention's been captured by Asper Girl for now, which takes up most of the time I'm not working today. Maybe I'll get around to reading more of it tomorrow.
Well this chapter sure reads like a queer coming of age for the manga still not openly admitting anything. But like, everybody's telling little Toda about how boys are into boobs and sex and ogling girls, and meanwhile Toda's like.... OK but like, I'm awfully intrigued by these drawings of naked ladies and boobs, what does that mean?
Even her practicing drawing is like, a detailed female figure and then a vague outline of a guy behind her.

TW//Sexual abuse, pretty personal shit, click at own risk, had to get it out after reading those last chapters. I can relate a bit to these new chapters, I got introduced into porn and adult content when I was very young, as a literal child, and not really at my will, it wasn't something i stumbled upon, it was something that a "friend" sat me down and made me watch, I developed some really warped sense of sexuality and romance, that sexual advances were normal and things that just occurred between friends, that lead to me being taken advantage off quite a couple of times. Back then i trusted in people way too much, i now don't, have a lot of trust issues and trauma from all of that, reading an experience that slightly resembles mine made me kinda happy, as weird as that sounds, not that I wish that on other people, but that it's comforting and makes me feel seen. (wow that really does sound weird, sorry if it was a bit hard to read, I left out some really really personal stuff out since I don't feel ok with sharing that much)

sometimes it's just incredibly helpful to see yourself represented in media, especially if it's a rarity. this is why i am so drawn to manga with disabled characters being treated (by the mangaka at least) in a respectful way.
that is a big part of the plot of asper girl. the main character draws manga where the main characters experience intense bullying and trauma. he hardly has any readers, but he continues with the thought that if his manga helps even just a few people, it was worth it.

Totally, as someone with aspergers that's a little bit the case for me, i usually draw explicit content (i do keep it to myself) since it's a helpful way for me to cope, also adds another layer of relatability.
Also definitely gonna read asper girl since it sounds interesting! I like stories like that, even tho I have to constantly take breaks from them to take it all in.
I really liked this Toda childhood arc. I liked how it as all shown and treated maturely. I am now interested to see more of the mother and how much she knows. I am amazed Toda was given out to for drawing boobs in class. Yeah it's art but if you tried that in any school I went to there would be such a punishment. I also really liked the coloured drawings of the characters at the back of the volume i am guessing. Cool to see Toda's hair colour, I assumed it would be a darker black.

Yeah when she turned out to be 17 I was kinda off put by things and worried how they were going to deal with this, but it ended up beins super well written.
We do know at least her mom has been reading her published works, so there's that.
I'm a little confused by the way Toba seems to refer to her work in progress as a "name" in Chapter 3. I don't know any Japanese, so is there some kind of idiom that's being lost in translation here?
'Name' is the rough draft of a manga. If the editor is OK with the name, then the artist can go ahead and draw a finished version based on it. Basically storyboards.
Also, "name" is the Japanese word, so think "nah'meh" rather than "neym".
It is actually pronounced neh-mu (ネーム). Apparently it's derived from the "specify" definiton of the English word "name" and is a term from the olden days when typesetting had to be done prior to the artwork being finished.
Just to maybe nail it down, it's a long eh but it's really close to our eh-ee (ei, neigh) dipthong. I.e., [e:] vs [eɪ] or [e][e] vs [eɪ] and the main difference is it's two morae† long vs the one for ei in neigh. So we'd actually hear it as English "name" but if someone was singing it, it'd be very clear it's neh-ehm.
Also, of course, it is easy to confuse with the japanese " namae " (Na-maeh) which also means name.
Also the title of her debut is a cute play on words, FWIW. 逆回転する観覧車 means reversal of the rotation of the wheel itself.
†syllables that mainly affect poetic rhythm and may be run together.

Gotta love the teacher's reaction: "Oh? It's a lot more realistic now!" ... and all of the other kids' faces.
Just picked this series up with chapter 12 and it's super charming. Somehow it slipped by me, and I'm really glad I gave it a shot. Fingers crossed for yuri, but I think I'll enjoy it no matter what. It's rare to see disabled characters written with such respect. I hope that continues.
Very grateful to the Gouma-Den crew for the hard work. Thank you~~~
I love it to pieces
but why would they not opt for yuri?
these two are soulmates. it'd be such a strange decision.
and yes i will enjoy it even if it just touches on Story S romantic 2 girl friendship etc. but honestly they should move to shibuya or sapporo and get married!
