I think the way most people know grammar is that they're able to use and understand a language without knowing how to describe what they understand. Anyone fluent in English would be able to understand the meaning of "My mother, whom I admire, is a teacher" and would be able to see that something is wrong with "My mother, I admire whom, is a teacher."
When I was in school, the only English grammar terminology I learned was in Latin class.
