As to the earlier list, I've seen Gurren Lagann which was fun, and Evangelion which wasn't. Basically Eva was Pretentiousness: The Show, where most of it was just beating on the kid with PTSD.
Honestly, he should have just teamed up with the angel guy at the end and killed everyone. I totally wouldn't have blamed him.
Problem is everyone in Eva is damaged. In SRW games, Shinji has a nice support network and is able to overcome stuff. He doesn't even need a Bright Slap.
The dummy plug mission in Z3 has a fun moment as IIRC Ryouma (Shin Getter Robo Armageddon) tells Shinji to go beat up his dad and Roger Smith (The Big O) agrees much to everyone's surprise.
But Shinji has an entire group of friends there helping him and so SRW as usual makes everything better. (Fixes the end of TTGL too, adds an ending to Shin Mazinger Z, has the coolest version of Char's Counterattack ever, etc).
Edit: Also Kowaru in SRW is neat as he is aware of every SRW incarnation. Full Frontal (Gundam UC) also knows other versions of Char from other SRW games so you get some cool dialog.
We never get First Gundam or SDF Macross though. No Macross in V, but I bet soon Delta will be in them probably.
Edit 2: TTGL is super fun because it is a love letter to super robot shows like Getter Robo, also Gainax mecha like Gunbuster, has a random Captain Harlock, and also makes great use of music. It is my second favorite Gainax anime after Gunbuster because Noriko is the best.
