FWIW, I kind of liked Mare when I read it. Unfortunately short of character development in the end, could have stood a little more depth overall to make us really invested in what was happening, but pretty good overall. Nevri has the right of it, this isn't really intended as porn either. It's sexual horror, where what would otherwise be intimate is subverted in the service of making the reader feel discomfort rather than aroused.

Not really. An okay mangaka in my book. Knew he drawn hentai too but then again men tends to have more lewd thoughts than women.

Still not even comparable to how disguisted i feel about Milk. Smh.

It's really weird that you react like: "but he's a man, so it's okay, but a woman can't do that!".
Anyway, even Octave's author probably did hentai in her doujinshi days, but we don't know the name she used them.

And she's pretty much just writes het anyway, Octave is her only yuri story.

Curious thing about Milk is that once she said she wanted to write horror stories, but she was pretty bad at it.

A lot of good yuri authors went on to do yaoi or het later, but there's no reason to consider their old stuff impure or anything.

I can't help but think our friend is buying into a variant of the "Madonna-Whore" dichotomy when it comes to female yuri artists. Basically women's work (and apparently none of this applies to male artists) falls into either "all pure" or "none pure" with no middle ground. One "impure" work totally throws them into the latter category and that's the end of it. It's not realistic or respectful to the creator at all of course, but more than that it's self-defeating to tie your own happiness to someone else maintaining your arbitrary standard of purity.

The "...men tends to have more lewd thoughts than women" part is totally hilarious, though.

He never met a yaoi fangirl I guess.

This makes me feel a little more interested in reading it. It's been on my to-read list for awhile because it sounds kinda interesting but at the same time I haven't been sure about it. Though either way I just haven't gotten around to reading it anyways, lol. I kinda have a bunch of visual novels I still need to get around to that I've been trying to prioritize when I have the energy and motivation to do something. (Just went through Ebi-hime's Asphyxia yesterday and started on Muv-luv today which sounds like it'll take awhile if the main character doesn't annoy me tot he point of quitting, not that this bit is even remotely on-topic other than Asphyxia at least being yuri.)

Morinaga-sensei's work changed completely when she started drawing for Yuri Hime. Something she said in an afterword made me think that what she's done since then (Sighs, Kisses, and Cherry Blossom Pink; Girlfriends; etc.) was the kind of work she wanted to do all along.

Mare was among the last, maybe the last, of her earlier works, and I think it's probably the best of those. It is well worth reading as long as you don't expect something like Girlfriends and watch out for that first chapter with it's horrifying rape scene. Well it is a horror manga.

This one will always be my favorite story by her. It's not as polished as Girl Friends (which was in fact the first yuri manga I ever read) but I still enjoy it more.

Horror is one of my favorite genres (pretty much tied for first with yuri in fact) so it being horror or being different than her normal work isn't a huge concern to me. The biggest reason I was iffy on it was actually the whole rape thing. Other than that it actually sounds like it could be pretty interesting.

If I recall correctly, she wrote something that said Nana and Hitomi were her favourites out of what she'd done so far. Can't find it now, I recall it was a page not included in the official volumes.

Is horror supposed to have rape too though? I like horror but rape is more in the gore category for me. It can be interesting without having to be cringey af. Nonetheless it's still horror I guess, but I'd prefer if they stayed in the hentai category.
Not saying anything about the author, just my thoughts on the genre.

I think it falls on the torture porn genre.
I'm not a fan of it. But well, that's why Morinaga said her horror stories are terrible.
Although its pretty common for japanese horror to put rape on them.

Rape is not a genre staple to horror, it's just a very easy way to make you feel uneasy regardless of genre. It's not gore though, pretty sure gore is just like, body parts hanging out and stuff.

Yeah I know gore is body parts and all that. But they both make me cringe more or less, so that's more of a "personal category" I put them both in

I'm not a fan of sexual horror, or in fact horror in general. Plus, I think rape is poorly used in most places it appears in fiction, as Easy Dark Backstory #1 for female characters. However, to say that this taints all Morinaga's work is naive and ridiculous at best, and buys into a weird purity obsession that seems to only apply to female authors since he gave men a pass due to being naturally more lewd.

That's actually pretty interesting to hear. Seeing as Girl Friends seems to be her most popular series (well at least in the west, I don't know whether her subsequent series were more popular or not in Japan though I recall hearing Girl Friends performed fairly poorly there) I kinda thought it'd probably be her favorite. The series doesn't seem to be nearly as popular as Girl friends but it really has a unique charm to it.

I like horror, that's why it annoys me that almost all horros stories nowadays are torture porn.
Well, it doesn't matter here anyway. It's just poor storytelling, but it shouldn't taint any author. Even more a amateur author at the time, as she was.
And hell, even if it was something worse, it's an old work, something she wouldn't even do nowadays probably.
It's not her only "rapey" story either. That one with nail polish and the one with bunny girls are pretty rapey, too. The one with bunny girls is even used as a joke. But they're just dumb porn stories that probably every mangaka did once.

Obsession with purity is stupid, anyway. Even more on old works of a mangaka that was a complete amateur at the time.

Maybe he's sensitive. This is like if someone got angry when it turned out that Rebecca Sugar used to draw RULE 34 pics of Terrytoons. Would you call them naive & ridiculous ?

Yes. Yes I would.

Also SF, if you make a long post about how sickened you are by a mangaka etc, you open yourself up to people saying "no".

There's a difference between saying no and calling him an idiot.

Yeah and there's a big difference between being upset that a mangaka drew something gross and this thread.

Like I could go into more indepth reasons why their post wasn't particularly good, but they haven't been too reasonable about it.

Ulquiorra was being fairly judgmental of the author, basing his thoughts from his horror in regards to one of her works. It's rather unrelated, I'd say, which is why most people are pretty confused as to how his opinion stands. He made an extreme post about it, and surely, people are allowed to disagree, just as much as he is allowed to share his opinion, though it was worded poorly. His dismissal of one of them was pretty rude too.

If you talking to me, just stop posting. Okay?
