Comer on, comrades, they are just kids yet

I agree. They're younglings discovering themselves. The narrative embodies the Risa's thoughts, not necessarily those of someone older and more aware of society's normatives. She literally called Yuuko her boyfriend due entirely to the fact that she LOOKS like a boy. Social justice aside, I'm pretty sure you can agree she looks similar to one.

I did like this. You could certainly pick holes and analyse, but I'll settle for being positive. It's thoughtful and the POV character is engagingly flawed. You get a real sense of people learning and developing.

I've got a bit of a soft spot for stories that show the butch/prince archetype can be a cage like anything else. Not everybody falls into it by design. Sometimes it can come about from a desire to look attractive, a boisterous upbringing, or it can become a 'safe state' where you don't have to try and fail at conventional femininity. The problem's compounded when somebody finds your princeliness attractive and you're trapped, maintaining a persona, that may be a beautiful part of you, but not all of you. I'm reminded of the whispered secret of a butch woman, who wore lacy undergarments under her flannel shirts and jeans. A pity we can't all be as fluid as we feel, but we're all someone else's rock, and we're all conditioned one way or another.

Honestly at this age this confusion about genders and sexuality just naturally happens. I was also once something like a "boyfriend" to one of my female friends and I don't even look boyish, it was about my behaviour and also my treatment of the girl in a stereotypical way because I wasn't aware at the time, there were different possibilities. I am quite sure these things will be different in the future for young people - many things have changed even from time, when I was a teenager and I am not even thirty yet. :D However on the other hand in some ways people are getting less and less tolerant towards those, who don't know everything about genders, sexuality and romance, even though it's completely human to make mistakes and learn from them - sometimes I am really surprised, how people can get aggresive towards those who lack some knowledge in these matters, even though they mean no harm at all, they just haven't gotten opportunity or reason to learn about these. I have to admit, I didn't like the beginning of the manga, but ending was quite good - admiting she doesn't have problem with her being a girl, on the other hand not being a gender specialist all of sudden - this would be extremely out of character. :D

More than feeling anger towards Risa, i was feeling uncomfortable because i knew Yuuko probably was too. At first it started really bad, like Yuuko was a replacement, but im glad that in the end she changed her perspective. And also them staying together and ordering the couples' special was cute :>

It starts off being gender normative, with Risa dating Yuuko as a replacement to her boyfriend, and Yuuko acting boyish in order to be close to Risa, but it ends with Yuuko wanting to be seen as a girl and Risa accepting Yuuko in any way. Risa doesn't say, "I won't consider you my girlfriend unless you look more girly."

you mean like when she literally says:

"you need to grow out your hair so that you can wear all kinds of girly things" "if you want to look like a girl, you need to care more about your appearance" to be finished with: "If you can do all that...THEN I CAN START SEEING YOU AS A GIRL! AND I CAN SEE YOU AS MY GIRLFRIEND!"

in conclusion, the author was trying to go for what everyone here is taking out of it, but had TERRIBLE execution of it in the end. terrrrrrrrriiiiiibllllllllllleeeeeeee wording in risa's confession. because what i took out of it: you can't be my girlfriend unless you look explicitly like a girl.

and personally, i think yuuko didn't per se want to be "girly." she just wants risa to SEE her as a girl. she put the hairband on to make that point. and now, she thinks to be risa's "girlfriend" she has to dress girly. a bunch of bs if you ask me.

edit: and god damn if there aren't some beautiful women out there who "look like boys"

Same, although it's refreshing to see some thoughtful comments in the discussion forum, from time to time. I didn't expect to like this one-shot as much as I did.

Yup, to sum it up, "the story is cute and the ending is satisfying" would be what I was going to wrote before reading up all this heated discussion.

So, it seems most people focused on wrong part of the story.

Sure Risa is basically saying "You look/act like a boy so I can't see you as a girl unless you act/dress like one", but given her age and the way we are taught to think about gender in our society I can totally understand her. No one will be perfectly aware of all those complicated issues (and honestly, how many of you were aware of it before you become a adult?) from the start and there is personal perception needed to be take into account. Everyone has different tolerance and acceptance for different stuff. To Risa there were 2 ways to dress and act, so for her if Yuuko wanted to be seen as a girl, that was what she first thought about.

Anyway, I didn't have too much issues with the final confrontation. To me it was 2 teenagers doing dumb stuff. Yuuko is at fault for going along with Risa's assumption and trying to look/act like a boy for her and Risa is at fault for assuming Yuuko liked to dress/act like a boy so she unwittingly pressured her to do so. Sure, Risa's words are messy and can seems off, but it was spurt of the moment speech where she was trying to clumsy get her feelings across, so I don't blame her for messing one of two things up in it. If anything Yuuko could just dump her regardless and be done with her, but she choose to apologize instead.

About that, I think she was more apologizing that she assumed that her acting/looking like a boy was what Risa wanted so instead of telling her faster, she just kept on doing it in order to bring them closer, but instead drift them more apart. So she probably saw true feelings in Risa's speech and realized she was at fault too. And even if Risa's putting unwittingly blame on Yuuko was bad after all, it ended well for them so who cares. And I can't blame Risa for her to want to see Yuuko acting/dressing more like a girl than boy, because seriously, that is how majority of world works and we are still far away for changing the norms and teaching children from young about those issues (and it can just be what is normal for author of the story as well, considering they are japanese).

To me the biggest issue of this story is inconsistency of Risa's feelings towards Yuuko as well as her personality. She is spoiled and selfish. She didn't get to same school as her boyfriend so she broke up with him cos she can't stand long distance relationship? The hell? Not to mention she said she still loved him. And first thing she does in new school is starting to date Yuuko, because she is lonely? And reason why she picked Yuuko is really unclear. It is suggested she wanted a stand in for a boyfriend so she picked the girl that didn't look like girl at all to fill that role. And then she falls in love with said girl because she is a girl and Risa doesn't want to see her as a boy? Wtf? Where that came from? It feels like entire part where she realizes Yuuko is actually a girl, but is looking/acting too much like a boy so Risa is confused, is missing. She never addresses that she first picked Yuuko because she was a stand in for a guy and then she fallen for true her. She just suddenly is truly in love with Yuuko when Yuuko gets mad, even though we never saw anything indicating she doesn't like/is conflicted about Yuuko looking/acting like a boy. Her only reason she can't love her as a girl is because Yuuko looks to manly. Wasn't that the reason she picked her in the first place? Cos she likes boys so she wanted someone who looked like one? And again, she didn't stop loving her previous boyfriend so if Yuuko had acted/looked like a boy entire time, there was no reason for Risa to suddenly fall in love with her as a girl. Entire being lesbian/bisexual didn't make sense for Risa. We never saw the transition from "I want new boyfriend to fill the void" to "I realized my new boyfriend is actually a girl and I want to see her that way". It feels like middle part of the story is missing. That is why despite not having much issues with their final confrontation, I can't really get behind Risa's feelings, because I'm not convinced if they are actually true in the first place.

I don't think Risa actually loved her ex boyfriend. She seemed to be nonchalant about not continuing the relationship with her ex. I think they didn't actually break up. It was more like a well we drift apart because of the distance and just didn't talk to each other again. I think she was in love with Yuuko at first but the reason she chose to ask Yuuko out wasn't the same. I think she did like Yuuko because she exhibited jealousy towards how popular Yuuko is in the beginning. But it was sort of like "well I need a boyfriend and if I asked Yuuko out not only is she boyish, I don't have to worry about her fan girls." I also think the whole "if I didn't call you -chan then I wouldn't see you as a girl anymore." was part of Risa trying to be honest after realizing that they were both making assumptions of each other. The very fact that Risa says it out loud after being asked the second time feels to me signals that she's finally had a realization. She's finally realized that the fact she chose Yuuko wasn't simply because of her boyish look or the fact that Risa herself needed to have someone there. If you look back on the first time Yuuko brought this up, Risa didn't give a clear answer. That kind of shows Risa either knowing or unknowingly not wanting Yuuko to know that she didnt want to see her as an actual boy. And at the end where Risa brings up the fact that Yuuko needs to look more feminine for her to consider Yuuko as a girl isn't really just gender normative dialogue. I feel like Risa was trying to convey the sentiment that Yuuko can be a girl and trying to explain to Yuuko that the boyish thing was a first impression based on her appearance. Then Risa even said that Yuuko has really good style so with just a little bit of help she was going to become a girly girl, something Yuuko wanted. Yuuko wanted to be seen like a girl to Risa and Risa didn't have any rejection over the idea.

Maybe I'm seeing this in a brighter light than other people. I personally thought despite the somewhat cringe worthy lines in the middle, there is a good message at the end. I've never been confused about any part of this since I was actually able to relate to both of Risa and Yuuko at some level. It reminded me a lot of my own struggles both internally and externally.

I'm the total opposite of this story. I've always been a tomboy at a young age and turned more of a guy as the years pass. And I prefer being called a guy than a girl. And thankfully my girlfriend doesn't mind it and actually supports me, which I'm super glad. But maybe that's just my case since everyone is different.

This bugs me for some reason. Maybe it was how Risa made it Yuuko's fault about dressing up as a boy, even though she said to do it and blames her for being boy-like.

Or maybe something else I can't pinpoint. I don't know, but Risa kind of pisses me off.

It was definitely super gender normative which left a kinda bad taste in my mouth. Like Risa buys into traditional gender roles incredibly hard to the point she can't even perceive a tomboy as a girl and it's just a bit bizarre.

I think it's just because it was normal for her up until now, I'm sure she's gotten used to it when they grew up

I really liked this one. Cute guns-blazing last panel. Does anyone know about the rest of the anthology? Left untranslated as not yuri, or abandoned by the translator?

The rest of the anthology is also gay af. Hopefully, somebody with free time can finish the rest of it! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I think I have the rest of it scanned, so if anyone really wants to take a jab at it...
