I believe in the original series Maou Sama-Retry demons didn't have much qualms with gender because they pursue strength and power. This could be the reason why in this new life the demon lord and her past life assistant's reincarnation have no problems with the gender.

I think I'm leaning for a middle ground between these two. The humans killed Maou (or she thought they did) and in grief and wrath she led the demons in a war of genocide rather than continue his peace talks.
