I think that’s a blush mark. The chibi style doesn’t have room for the hatching she uses for blushing with the full faces.

I’m assuming if I haven’t read the original I’m supposed to be as confused as Asuka. Not really sure what Ayako’s inspiration for doing that was. I really like how the intrigue is being built with this series

My guess is that Akira's sudden departure, reopened old wounds from the death of Atsushi, and Ayako used Asyka as a surrogate, for her dead husband, to comfort herself.

Kudos to Tayaki-san. Almost 6 years ago, they ended the first half of the story with the intention to reedit it, and then finish the story, and now their actually doing it. THAT is dedication.
