Forum › Do you ever take breaks from reading yuri?

Lately, I’ve been wondering—does anyone here ever take a break from reading yuri manga?

I love the genre, but sometimes I feel the need to pause for a while, either to avoid burnout or to try something different. Then, after a break, coming back always feels refreshing, and I enjoy the stories even more.

Do you guys ever do this, too? Or do you keep reading non-stop as new chapters and series come out?

Curious to hear your thoughts!

I wouldn't necessarily call it a break, but since I tend to pay more attention to yuri, when i'm feeling tired or like I don't want to focus, I gravitate to trashy het instead lol

Yuri is basically my life blood, I gotta keep the flow going otherwise I'll keel over and turn into dust lmao

I mean, depends. What timescale are working with with regards to these breaks? If these breaks can be counted in hours, then, yeah I do - I have other hobbies too, yaknow. But if the breaks can be counted in days, then, no, I don't think I can make even a full day without at least a handful of yuri images

Lmao relatable. Some people start their day with coffee, I start my day browsing through any Yuri art I might have missed while asleep (and a cup of green tea lol)

Why yes. Sometimes I have to work, sleep, or fulfill a social engagement.

Not so much take a break but even when i'm not looking for a romance specifically i'd still read/watch/play media with female protagonists.
No matter how much i want to switch it up, you'd never catch me reading het or one of the millions of series with another boring milquetoast dude mc.
just not my style.

Reality is pretty bleak and I have to find my sanity a safe harbor, so no? At least not as in several days.

Not consciously for sure.
And either way, it may be on standby but I can't actually turn off the "yuri mode" in my brain. Could be a side effect of being gay.

I like good romance, especially as part of a larger series. Taking a break would be not reading at all, which I don't see happening. I don't only read yuri.

this is my case definitely. my brain itself is yuri so it's just fundamentally part of me!

anyway, to add a different angle to OP's question, i do take breaks from reading yuri manga sometimes. usually it's when i'm really deep into a (yuri) ship and i don't have the capacity for anything else.

and... i also enjoy the occasional galge or harem junk. i'm the lesbian that resigns to playing guys in games because it's more important to me to have cute girls to date, and tbh, i just like super indulgent horny stuff to begin with? if i were given the choice between a shoujo romance and something like girls bravo, i'm choosing the latter

I do go through periods where I'm more or less interested in a genre. The tropes tend to get repetitive if you overdose on one genre. I'll keep reading my favorite ongoing series from the genre regardless, though, as those don't get boring.

Currently I'm mainly reading yuri comics and Terry Prachett novels, but in the past I went through periods where I was more interested in male demographic isekai and regression stories, where I was more interested in straight female demographic otome game series, and similar. The commonality is that I tend to like fantasy and drama the most.

I was going to say it was a side effect of me being chronically single for a number of years, but maybe I will also go with this explanation to maintain what's left of my internet dignity.

I read yuri for two independent reasons, so I may take a break from the one without stopping the other.

Firstly, I overall read a lot, and with romance, fem-/slash is just more enjoyable to me. I theorize that straight romance leads usually suck because (presumably straight) authors can't write attraction to their own gender... anyway, as shipping-brained as I am, additional gayness is always welcome. So it depends on what genre I feel like each week.

For the other reason ... some days I'm just frustrated with the general state of the world, and stressed out by the audacity of its people, and I'm too close to snapping. And before lashing out at what, after work, will likely be those close to me, I started microdosing yuri fluff. Perhaps it's pathetic that the first thing I do each Tuesday is checking the new image uploads, but since my SO must sleep (for reasons I won't publicly divulge) separately from me, that gives me the strength to keep my aggressions that day only verbal...

So I probably shouldn't take a break from yuri, but the intensity of my consumption varies.

One thing I’ll add is something I’ve said in the past, which is that I view Yuri as simply an umbrella term for all things lesbian. While there’s some relationships I like that are Het and some that are Yaoi, my heart will always be with Yuri. I shipped girls together back before I even knew what shipping or fandoms were, I just wanted the girls to date, kiss, and so forth. Like Starfire and Raven was (and still is) a big one for me back in the day with the animated series. It’s not something I can turn off or take a break from, it’s simply how I’m built lol

Perhaps it's pathetic that the first thing I do each Tuesday is checking the new image uploads

That’s nothing to be ashamed of in my opinion. Part of my Monday and Friday night ritual is seeing the new art uploads on here. It’s an enjoyable part of the week that gives me something consistent to look forward to, in this chaotic and depressing world it’s nice to have that regular dose of comfort.

No, but I also read manga of like, various other genres too.

Starting the day with fluff yuri is a cute behavior. Send anyone who doesn't approve to me so I can glare at them condescendingly.

Following scanlations kind of makes it impossible even if I wanted to, since there's always an ongoing series I'm reading.
