I’m pretty sure that was drawn by the teacher, it’s something teachers will draw on assignments and tests if the student did well

Oh, you're right. But I never saw a teacher do that. Just checks circles and a number. I never saw an art class but I did see the art club and that stuff wasn't graded. I wonder if female teachers/students arent more likely to be involved.

^Seems to be a Japanese thing. Seen it a few times in manga and anime before, but most recently actually in Yoshi's Crafted World as a mark for collecting everything required in a level.
