I think it's inspired by the Psychidae of caterpilar (i think the english name is bagworm moth?), who built themselve a protective case made of silk and the environemental material (notably vegetal) around them. Instead of building a wooden house (as in a wooden cabin) Hinami did like the psychidae worms, which is obviously not very confortable or warm for humans.

The pokemon Burmi and Wormadam, as well as the Mega Man X2 boss Morp Moth, are inspired by this type of insect.
Japanese kids love insects so i guess this reference would be more immeditately understandable to a japanese reader.
