I think the intent was "more than friends, less than lovers" was where they were like, right before the doujin started. Obviously that is uh, not where they are by the end. Or even like halfway through.

I feel like "fuck buddies" still fits into the narrow window between friends and lovers. I mean, I think they probably dove headfirst through that window too, but I'm just saying, there's some wiggle room they could've been working with.

I came to understand them as literal quantifiers of sex, at least relative to the rest of the manga (i.e. a series totaling 500 pages with 20 of those dedicated to buttering the bread is Moderate amounts of sex whilst 7 out of 8 from some one-shot would be Lots of sex).

But I think the latter also exapted into this site's smut/PWP tag, used to differentiate hentai from works with legitimate use of sex and nudity.
