I doubt the illustrations have much of a continuity to them. More that the artist drew them in a number of situations with different styles.

Hair cutting can mean a number of things, if you're worried about it meaning something like heartbreak. Of course it can mean heartbreak, but people also cut their hair because they are in love (Girl Friends), sometimes to put off the feelings until a later date (Inari, Kon Kon), and sometimes simply because they want a new hair style.

I can sometimes take issue with the short hair in either tomboy or lesbian stories, because it sometimes has the feel of "Oh this person is like a boy, she must have short hair" or "Oh there's a lesbian couple, someone must have short hair in order to play the guy". But that's clearly not the aura of this series, so I think we're safe.

Click the Resize button on the top right, that should help. The arrows should be pointing away from each other.
