Bro what the fuck is wrong with Kanoko ? Like, I thought she was going to finally become likeable and she goes and does this shit. Holy hell,at this point I expect soap opera levels of villainy from her.

That aside,do we have any idea how old is Sumika ? She dresses like a high schooler, yet given how long she has been working at the cafe plus the fact that she seems to have a semi-managerial position seems to imply she is around her early 20s

As far as I know, Sumika was a high schooler at the time of Liebe's founding, so she was 15-16 at the time and is 17-18 now. Nene's 20, Mai's probably in her 20s, and Yoko's most likely at least 21.

I personally think it's still too early to judge Kanoko. Without spoiling anything, we don't know who the phone caller is, their motives for reaching out to Kanoko, or why Kanoko's going along with it.

The localization of Volume 10 recently came out. For those who are interested, the localizers use the term "lesbian," as well as "gay" once when Nene asks Sumika why she's hostile toward Yoko. On the other hand, in Chapter 50, Hime says to Kanoko, "If you have been avoiding Yano because she developed a crush on someone of the same sex."

I was skimming through Volume 10 and this part of Chapter 51 caught my attention, when Kanoko asks Sumika to start dating:

Fan translation: "Please go out with me. Please become my lover, and end your hate for romance."

Official: "Please go out with me. Please be my girlfriend... So I can stop hating romance."

I noticed that, too. That seems to be another pronoun-based mistranslation, like when, in Volume 9, Kanoko claimed that Sumika wanted Hime to quit in the localization, when in the fan translation, she was talking about how Sumika was no longer trying to get Kanoko to give up on her crush.

I'm still not caught up, only chapter 10, but excited for the anime next year. at first i found it a bit worrying. we've had so few non class-S-y anime where it kinda feels like jumping to taking the piss out of them may seem more abrupt to outside audiences. However, i love the weird blend of improv theatre / maid cafe bullshit framing of it thats like, obviously only something lesbians who have read class-s would dream up. For that reason it really has legs, as its not just your lazy self-aware meta schlock. theres a mash up of identities/roles that gets extra doubled for Hime, as she contends her facade/true self, her queerness, and her role as the little sister. Each one has different constraints that are going to rub raw against one another's wants and desires re: not just romantic relationships but all her social ones. well worth the adaptation, thank god. that said. Hello Melancholic absolutely still deserved one as well...

Welp, caught up. Looks like i was lasered in lol. Hime def experiences sexual attraction to women, i think the whole liebe overnight trip is where it really gets into that conflict of facade/queerness/role. Part of me was hoping Mai was catching some of her blush and fluster on film to be like "SEE, YOU ARE GAY, MISS" but it didnt happen lol. Seeing hime's conflict near reflected by kanoko and refracted by sumika has been pretty engaging. What I hope for with this last play is its going to engage some more introspection on Hime's end. That said, I think what she feels for Yano is somewhere equal to how she feels for kanoko, and I would absolutely love a polyam advancement. I even have reason to see it stretch amongst the main 6 or so (including Nene here) not in an all 6 equally but it's own kind of web.

There's virtually zero chance of a class-s tier cop out, no "and they all kept being specialist sisters, the five of them" as it's pretty clear the story is about how lesbians themselves are unsatisfied with those narratives (which yay im glad we are finally getting heard maybe, idk who author is), and I suspect this to be once again more spurring for Yano given how she's seen Hime squirm and wriggle both in the salon and out.

As for the heat on kanoko, if we take, the idea that she's holding a similar conflict as Hime, (see the whole , I'll teach you to have a facade too deal) I think she has as much to "answer for" as Hime. She's just now starting to lie, just as selfishly as Him, and as was said, out of some kind of genuine desperation. Of you're gonna come down hard on her, then Hime deserves the same for not entirely working through her feelings. She very clearly shuts the door, whether its in terms of physical desire(per the whole trip arc) or romantic (per the scenes portraying her perspective after the kiss) and only briefly opened it to stay at liebe.

One interesting thing I noticed in the localized Volume 10 is that unlike the scanlations, in which Nene sounds as though she wants to cut ties with Yoko, in the localization, Nene wants to figure out why Yoko cut ties with her. The localization's version makes more sense and explains why Nene fell prey toko's manipulations

Chapter 52 has been scanlated. For now, the status quo seems to be holding, if barely, but Kanoko still isn't happy with how things are. I'm personally curious what's going to happen next, although I suspect that Kanoko will be forced to come to terms with her unrequited love for Hime and jealousy of Mitsuki before she and Sumika truly become a couple.

I asked the fan translator about it, and after reviewing the sentence from the last page of Chapter 48 they told me that their interpretation is: "Nene did consider her relationship with Youko to be over at that point, and she wanted to meet up with her just to ask why things ended the way they did."

Chapter 53
Nene is kind of the direct opposite of Kanoko. Here we have two people in love with someone that doesn't love them back. Nene was trying to get Sumika's attention but failed to consider how her actions were affecting Sumika. Kanoko tried to keep everything the same as it was, and is fucking with Sumika as a way to do that. At least from Nene's perspective she doesn't know she's being cruel. She did something shitty, and regrets it immensely. Kanoko knows she's being cruel and is doing it anyway.

Chapter 53:
I love this kind of chapters. Back at the beginning of Volume 9 I never would have expected that the shift in focus from Hime/Yano to the rest of the group would be so beneficial to the series, but the author definitely knows what they are doing. Nene in particular has been an incredibly pleasant surprise. I love her character and her introspective moments as much as I hate Youko and her manipulations.

I don't see any realistic chance of Nene and Sumika ending up together after everything that happened, unfortunately. It's to be expected that Kanoko will start to have feelings for her at some point during their fake relationship, although her current self is far from deserving someone like Sumika.

My response:
I've felt it for a bit and especially after this chapter.
It's possible someone is trying to rekindle Sumika and Nene's relationship through Kanoko. Nene is basically being made to go through the same thing she put Sumika through. It's possible this parallel is intentionally meant to force Nene's hand in the same way Nene thought her trist with Youko would force Sumika's hand in the past.

I never thought about that. I’m hoping that’s true though, I dread having Sumika get burned a second time when she’s one of the best characters. It’s only slightly better and will still probably end up messy, since Kanoko doesn’t genuinly seem to care about how Sumika feels and is just doing whatever this mystery person wants, but at least the aim would be to help her this time instead of just making her jealous and forcing her feelings out. I initially thought it’s youko trying to pull the same thing again and it does seem like the stories bringing her back to stir things up again. But it could be the manager since she seemed to want them to talk in the last chapter and the mystery person wanted Kanoko to make Sumika happy somehow

That's certainly possible, but at the same time, Kanoko receiving Yoko's "LIME ID" was presented as a bit of a Chekhov's Gun. Again, it's possible that since Kanoko doesn't think Yoko's as bad as Sumika said she was, she trusts her more than she should and ended up being manipulated. As for Mai, it's possible that Kanoko has her number, but I wonder if the story would conceal her identity for this long if she was the one behind this.

Yup, Nene confirmed to be MVP of growing and becoming a better person. That was awesome. I'm dreading the shit Kanoko is gonna pull next chapter.

Chapter 55: What a beautiful, cathartic chapter for both Sumika and Nene. I love their relationship, and I hope the latter can find happiness now that she has completely moved on from her past loves. Other than that, having to wait to find out what Youko sent to Nene will be tough. It's impressive how the manga has gradually gone from the innocent, light-hearted comedy that it was in its beginnings to what it has become. And I think it's fantastic.

Chapter 55: My Sumika x nene heart… I knew it was near impossible for these two to get together, so what a crazy whirlwind of emotions this chapter and volume has been. Lots of “what ifs” and “could it be”, some moments got me jumping out of my seat. I absolutely adore and have been rooting for these 2 characters, their past, their interactions, so it was honestly a beautiful but sad chapter :( “thank you for ending this love with me” omg my heart T_T part of me still wishes they would end up together but alas… this painful closure was needed for them. it’ll probably take a while for me to get over them, any fellow sumika x nene shippers out there to cry with together? Haha, it now made sense why nene always felt a little apprehensive / had to kind of mentally prep herself before approaching sumika, the sweat drops or deep sigh etc. Great chapter though!

Both Sumika and Nene (this one in particular) have grown on me a lot with these last few volumes, so I was also hoping that the two would end up together somehow, but Chapter 55 feels to me like a definitive closure for any possibility of that happening in the future. But who knows, maybe Youko's bad deeds and Kanoko's complicity will end up bringing them together. I doubt it, as Kanoko will probably fall in love with Sumika at some point, and it's hard for me to think that the former won't have her happy ending.

Waiting for the next chapter will be tough. I know I shouldn't, but I'm so tempted to take a look at the first few pages of Chapter 56...

I really hope Kanoko and Sumika don’t truly end up together, as others have pointed out, Nene when faced with something similar was blind to what could go wrong or if Sumika gets hurt. However, Kanoko not only knows what she is doing is wrong, she is even explicitly told that what she’s doing can hurt Sumika, but she does it anyways and just denies any possibility of that acknowledging that truth. The whole “I just have to not tell Sumika and everything will be fine” shit was the line, yeah Yoko is a manipulative bitch, but Kanoko is completely intentionally being oblivious to all her own misdoings and disregarding all the warning bells she herself is feeling. (Like she already knows going to a hotel room with Yoko looks and is bad and they were going to not go, but the second Yoko mirrors her and reminds her what she’s doing IS wrong, she turns around on herself and does it anyways despite what she knows).

Kanoko is an incredible selfish person that only cares about her own happiness. While they are all flawed to some degree, none of the other girls are actively trying to cause other people harm like she is (well, except for Youko). Maybe my opinion will change in the future, but that's how I see it right now. It will undoubtedly be a tough challenge for the author to turn her into a likable character for the vast majority of readers.

Just compare her way of expressing her love towards Hime with Yano's. If I were to summarize it briefly, it would be something like this:
- Yano wants Hime to be happy.
- Kanoko wants Hime.

I know it seemed impossible after the last chapter for Sumika and Nene to end up together, but now I see it as a goodbye and end to Nene’s foolish and immature love towards Sumika to signal Nene’s genuine maturity to show her change by being completely honest and upfront this time around for her love towards Sumika instead of relying on schemes.

Don't do that, don't give me hope...

Yuri Is My Job is now available on Renta! It's a bit surprising that they're including a few relatively popular series like Whispering You A Love Song and If I Could Reach You, since until recently, their yuri selection was fairly niche.

60 chapters in and there isn't even a single pairing that works. What a waste of time.
