That's probably more related to age than anything, they may have been held back. Precocious puberty actually makes a child shorter than average.

So it's early in what would be her second year of college. When Komari went on her date with Hotaru, she was 13. So they have a two-year age gap. The age gap here may be as little as nine years, so ....

Is there a translation error or is there just something weird in the original Japanese? The MC goes from calling herself a “working adult” who just goes back and forth from “home to the office” to calling the kid-adult a “college student just like me” and back to a “working adult”. It’s actually more confusing than adult-plus-kiddie-backpack = child logic for me. At least that’s just Japanese normal weirdness.

It's her second year as a working adult, and she got a 2-year degree (I am speculating) so she's not that much older than the girls who are still in college (seniors, finishing their 4-year degree).
