The series was going towards a yuri ending when the author stopped drawing it (for health reasons or something, I never knew for sure).
There was a lot of bisexuality in the story. Nana & Hachi love each other but end up marrying their male suitors because "Well, that's what a girl gotta do, right?" But then one becomes a widow and the other divorces, and it looks like they can be together at last, KYAAA!
... and at that point the author stopped it and we never found out what was going to happen in the end. >_<

^ Yazawa was hospitalized in 2009, got better in 2010, hasn't continued writing Nana since (though she has worked on a slew of minor projects). Far be it from me to speculate about her reasons, but if a series as popular as Nana kept publishing as planned and actually had a yuri ending in around 2011-12, it would've been pretty huge for the genre. Might've changed the perception of yuri as niche and altered the course of the industry. All we have today are what-ifs, but it's an interesting prospect.

does anything in Touhou (comics or games) specify how old Alice is? Or when she came to the forest or to Gensokyo? If she's like 100 years older, that might explain their relationship.

^no, she's pretty much one big cipher. She first appears in Gensokyo (and the Windows games) in Perfect Cherry Blossom inexplicably in her present "grownup" form and greets Reimu (who doesn't recognize her) as an old acquaintance, and kinda just sticks around thereafter.

@random Alice is a youkai if you want to speak broadly I guess- but the peoples from her home realm are refered to as demons right? But Alice is the daughter of Maki's goddess- does that make her different from the normal citizens of Maki? She certainly doesn't seem to be a Godess since she has or needs no faith to sustain herself..
Is there such a thing as half god in Japanese mythology? If Her Mom just wished her into existence she could be any kind of Youkai /being I guess..

All you can say for sure is she isnt human. Or a Goddess probably..

@TopKoak I dont get the impression she is creeping out on her at all- it seems she is just teasing/tormenting/embaressing her for fun. You know what Yuuka is like. Not coming on to her though.
