I watched the anime until things begin to fall apart, then realized things will NOT end well. Now I can enjoy yuri fantasy while ignoring the reality of the story :D.

^^ Obviously Nana and Nana are from Nana. Didn't you read the tags? Sheesh
Ok, what are the numbers on their bodies for? Are they clones? Taking a break from a marathon? Or is this part of some sort of twisted cross word puzzle? Yeah, it’s probably the last option: 7 across (the box) and 8 down (on 7).
Answer: Crate and Craps!

this be one of the gayest “hetero” manga/anime ever. I had a feeling this is what nana and hachiko did every night in their apartment

I think I watched most of the first season. Their friendship is really sweet and my yuri-trained brain saw their narrative going one direction. Turns out, heteronormativity is not only overtly prevalent, but also very nonsensical. Nana and Nana are literally straight for the sake of straightness. They have a lot of chemistry together. If their writer was just writing with a compelling story in mind, they would have ended up together. But they weren't, they were writing with straightness in mind and it shows. I gave up on the show and it rests as one of the most disappointing anime I have ever seen. Lovely pairing, though, and this picture is great.

I always got the impression Nana had the hots for Hachiko (Nana 7) and that because of their tragically messy love lives they never had the chance to date/end up together....and alas, the manga was never finished so it's hard to say if they ever addressed their feelings for one another

@HellAQA: Yeah, I know what you mean. When Nana said was searching for her ex-boyfriend I thought she did so to punch him in the face for dumping her and running off. But no, she actually starts dating him again. Hello? Why would you still want to date someone like that? It seemed very out-of-place for a somebody who is supposedly strong-willed and independent.
And then there's the whole debacle of Hachi getting knocked up by a total scumbag, just when she and Nana began to realize their feelings for each other.
Heteronormativity, indeed.

Writing with straightness in mind? I mean, it's a josei romance manga. That's sort of like lambasting Akira Toriyama for having all those fight scenes in Dragonball when he has a perfectly good slice of life mood going on every few episodes. I love queer and yuri works too, but I wouldn't expect them to show up in other genres. Josei romance stories are all about melodramatic, anxiety-inducing dynamics, like Hachi basically being a prisoner in her home. However! There's some yuri that grew out of that genre, and if Nana but yuri is your jam... check these out: https://dynasty-scans.com/authors/yamaji_ebine https://dynasty-scans.com/series/moonlight_flowers
Packed full of awful, sad, emotional times. Hopefully better than the ending of Nana which, like, damn. Nana is clinically, catatonically depressed after Rin dies, and then the manga is dropped. Yikes. I don't think the last chapters ever made it to a tankobon.

Viewing the episodes for me was this process:
Watches to almost the end: 'Yeah, barely subtext, but definitely not yuri. Nope'
Watches the internal monologue at the very end: 'Woah! This is totally yuri. Yep!'
Rinse and repeat

The series was going towards a yuri ending when the author stopped drawing it (for health reasons or something, I never knew for sure).
There was a lot of bisexuality in the story. Nana & Hachi love each other but end up marrying their male suitors because "Well, that's what a girl gotta do, right?" But then one becomes a widow and the other divorces, and it looks like they can be together at last, KYAAA!
... and at that point the author stopped it and we never found out what was going to happen in the end. >_<

^ Yazawa was hospitalized in 2009, got better in 2010, hasn't continued writing Nana since (though she has worked on a slew of minor projects). Far be it from me to speculate about her reasons, but if a series as popular as Nana kept publishing as planned and actually had a yuri ending in around 2011-12, it would've been pretty huge for the genre. Might've changed the perception of yuri as niche and altered the course of the industry. All we have today are what-ifs, but it's an interesting prospect.
