Forum › Manga General Thread
Well with this anime season thread and gaming general thread, I'd figure this the next logical step. I mean, we're all manga fans in here? From series you just fell in love with, to long time favourites, just post it guys!
One of these days I'll make a list of "great/good reads" but not today!
So I'm going to just open this thread with... A sneak peek of the upcoming Shingeki no Kyojin ( Attack on Titan ) chapter.
So I'm warning you guys, don't click the spoilered link if you are not prepared to witness the information.
DON'T CLICK IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET SPOILED! There's an image plus text on the second line.

IS THIS MOTHERFUCKING TITANSTORIA?
I primarily only read yuri manga. I tend to read fluffy stuff though, I'm just that sort of person, drama and stuff kinda drives me insane. Although I will generally truck on through if the series is completed and has a good end, and without any NTR or het crap involved.
My favourites would probably be Ameiro Kouchakan Kandan and Fu-Fu.
I would read SnK, but that's the sort of manga I'd just avoid reading lol. I mean, how can you get attached to the character's in the story if they're probably gonna die soon.
"Ho hi, I'm a new character, yoroshiku!"
Next chapter, they're impaled on a wall or get munched. :(
Honestly, I shy away from reading SnK for much the same reason as I avoid One Piece. It's WAY too heavy an investment. I did read from the beginning up to the end of the first battle with the female titan, and by that point I was overwhelmed by the bleakness of it all and the frequent tragedy. To go through that again, twice over in terms of length by now, no way I can handle that.
As far as what I do read, I basically have a few mangas that I go back to over and over again. Stuff like XXX-Holic, Hanjuku Joshi, Pieta, Aria/Aqua, YKK, Katsu!, Baby Steps and a few others.
I wish I could find more stuff of the folklore-heavy, quiet mystery type like Mushishi or to some degree XXX-Holic though.
Mushi-shi is really something
Outside of the yuris here i... Read a lot of crap, and i don't mean that i read a lot of stuff but that the stuff i read are a bunch of piece of shits that i can't believe i'm wasting my time on them, especially stuff by Seo Kouji and any generic shoujo that may randomly appear in a reader, there's a bunch of Gundam manga that i should be reading like Crossbone but i'm not a good reader and prefer to stick with animes when it comes to more complex stuff
I would read SnK, but that's the sort of manga I'd just avoid reading lol. I mean, how can you get attached to the character's in the story if they're probably gonna die soon.

But that's really the only good about it! I can understand, if you're all about the fluffy and the vanilla, sort of hard to digest anything else.

Oh, what are you doing... A lot of times I feel like making detailed list of titles with my opinion and genre on it, just for the folks that seem to read a lot of stuff they shouldn't read. There's just too much content in all demographics that people can waste their time on.
I do have a list of 12-15(?) titles with a brief explanation, genre tags, length, MU link and my take on it. But I sort have to format it another way because it doesn't really insert itself in this forum easily right now. That and I probably have to edit titles that have "Warning : Rape, prostitution, many character deaths, etc..." in them. I don't think this the crowd for this kind of stuff.
Go ahead, I might like it.
This list has been done by just randomly picking up titles from my "follows" on Batoto in like an hour, nothing too fancy really. Some information ( like volume length may be incorrect because this small list has been done a few months ago )
Hopefully it's going to come out alright on this reader. Also this deals in pretty "known" titles since it was my pretty much "Introduction to different demographic/genre for dummies". So it's quite possible a bunch of you are at least familiar with a lot of them. Still, I worked one long hour to do this a while back, so might as well post it again!
Please excuse the horrible English, it being a third tongue, it's sort of hard to be all nice-like and informative with the language.
Kiba no Tabishounin - The Arms Peddler
Genre : Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 6 Volumes ( Ongoing and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=53101
Art : I love the art really, very nice usage of black tones and overall top art.
Story : Nuclear Winter happened, MC is a little kid that’s been saved by beautiful and ass kicking woman. It’s really generic shounen with a bit more brutality, honestly It’s just mentioned here because I love kick ass women and good art. The only reason this is seinen is because of the gore and the nudity at some point in the story. Consider this the only “entry level” manga of my this list.
All-Rounder Meguru
Genre : Sports, Martial Arts
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 13 Volumes ( Ongoing and available online up to Volume 9 )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=38777
WARNING : Graphic Nudity ( although it’s mostly used for comedic purposes )
Art : Endo Hiroki’s art is very realistic in body proportion and this really shines in this manga
Story : Pretty straight-forward story, high school student who's done Karate who is now moving towards MMA. He’s a bit of a doofus but he’s hard working. What really makes this manga shine is the very realistic approach to MMA and fighting in general. If you want something a little less crazy with your martial arts manga, this is a good one.
Eden - It's an Endless World!
Genre : Psychological, Sci-Fi, Tragedy
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 18 Volumes ( Complete and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=930
WARNING :
Graphic Nudity ( Multiple cases of Sexual Intercourse, rape, prostitution )
Graphic Violence ( Shit happens, people die )
Art : This is the previous work of Endo Hiroki ( All Rounder Meguru ).
Story : This is pretty much a Saga. Lots of time skips, lots of people Dying ( No one is safe, you have been warned, don’t come crying when all your favourites characters are dead ).
Guns, androids, organized crime, aliens, the end of the world. This manga has it all. From all this chaos also comes some reflection of the human condition. I highly recommend this work, even if it can be frustrating at times.
The Friendly Winter
Genre : Webtoon, Slice of Life, Drama
Size : 64 Chapters ( Complete and fully available online )
MU Link : https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=82158
Art : Like most webtoons, it is in colour rather than black and white. The art is pretty decent and the colour choice makes this work pretty.
Story : I’m going to plug in the description from MU
Quote:
A 19 year old girl with a rare growth disorder that leaves her in the body of a small child meets a boy with a mental disorder, who has the mind of a small boy in a 17 year olds body. A Friendly Winter shares with us the endearing story of their day-to-day lives, joys and tribulations.
This pretty much explains it, expect sadness, expect joy, expect tears. This webtoon is both heart warming and heart wrenching at times.
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Genre(s) : Mystery, Comedy, Supernatural
Demographic : Shonen
Size : 23 Volumes ( Completed and available in English online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=824
Art : The art is a bit weak and looks more dated than it actually is, but for this kind of Manga it’s fine. There’s some great « demonic » panels every now and again when he uses his powers.
Story : This is your typical episodic murder case solving manga with a demonic twist to it. A lot of comedic moments between the demon and his useless high school girl sidekick.
Nobugana no Chef
Genre : Cooking, Historical, Drama
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 9 Volumes ( ongoing and 7 volumes available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=64038
Art : Art is pretty good, especially when the MC is cooking, lots of power in those pages.
Story : A chef time gets thrown back to the Sengoku Era (1467 – c. 1573) and becomes the Chef for Oda Nobugana while he’s trying to unite Japan. Lots of tense moments as he cooks for many important figure of the time, at the same time he’s lost his memories of himself. But his knowledge of history is still intact, although he hesitates to do something too dramatic, because that would change the future. All and all, MC is smart and it’s pleasure seeing evolve in an unfamiliar era.
Berserk
Genre : Action, Adventure, Supernatural
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 37 Volumes ( Ongoing and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=88
WARNING :
Graphic Nudity ( instances of rape ( male rape as well ), corpse being displayed naked after execution, etc )
Graphic Violence : Lots of blood and things being cut into smaller pieces.
Art : Although the first few volumes are a bit Shaky ( this was back in 88’ folks ) this manga is amongst the top detailed art in the manga industry later on ( post-eclipse arc ).
Story : Without spoiling too much, the MC is a big badass with a big sword on a quest for revenge. And he kicks a lot of demons ass. Set in a medieval world with fantasy elements ( fairies, demons etc… ). If you want a dark action-adventure Saga, this is pretty much it.
Sakamoto desu ga ?
Genre : Comedy, School Life, Slice of Life
Demoraphic : Seinen
Size : 2 Volumes ( Ongoing, about ¾ of it available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=77748
Art : Pretty good.
Story : Let’s just say this is the story of the most incredible being there ever was. You’d be a fool not to read this.
Horimiya
Genre : Romance, School Life, Slice of Life
Demographic : Shounen
Size : 5 Volumes ( ongoing and fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=70263
Art : Pretty clean art, typical for a sweet romance story like this one.
Story : From MU
Quote:
Hori is your average teenage girl... who has a side she wants no one else to ever find out about. Then there's her classmate Miyamura, your average glasses-wearing boy in school and a totally different person out. When the two meet unexpectedly, they discover each others' secrets and develop an unexpected friendship.
That’s pretty much it, it’s 2 people learning more about each other and spending time together, and learning to appreciate one another. No drama, no serious love rivals. Just some sweet and comedic moments.
Innocent
Genre : Drama, Historical, Psychological
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 4 Volumes ( Ongoing and 3 volumes available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=92248
Warning : Alternative Sexuality ( Main character has a non-platonic relationship with another boy for some time )
Art : Very visceral and realistic art that accentuate the psychological aspect of this work
Story : The story is set in Revolutionary France and the MC is from a family of executioner, he’s forced into the position by his father and family. But he’s a kind soul, so this is something that’s very taxing to do for him. Because of his occupation, he’s scorned by the rest of society, which further alienate him. The story is really about his own struggle in life and the goal he set for himself ( to abolish executions ). This doesn’t look like much at first, but the ride is pretty intense. I strongly suggest everyone give this a try, even with the "lul homo" warning.
REAL
Genre : Sports, Drama, Psychological
Demographic : Seinen
Size : 13 Volumes ( ongoing, fully available online )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=142
Art : Great art that comes alive and really able to communicate what the characters feel and experience.
Story : From MU:
Quote:
The story revolves around three teenagers with a desire to play basketball. Nomiya, being a high school dropout, has no future in his life. Engulfed by the guilt of crippling a girl in a traffic accident where he invited her on a bike ride finds himself in a deep predicament. Togawa, a former talented sprinter who once strove to become the best in Japan now putting his all in wheelchair basketball finds it hard to deal with the disinterest and psyche of his own team mates. Takahashi, once a popular and arrogant team leader, an honour student, a self proclaimed elite now finds himself being unable to move from the chest down.
You’ve read correctly, a lot of the basketball matches in this manga will be in the wheelchair format.
A view into a sport that most people don’t see often. Also dives into the mind of those who are seemingly lost everything after losing uses of their legs. A very good read for those who want a more serious approach to a sport manga and life. This is really such a sport manga as it is a coming of age story.
7 Seeds
Genre : Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance
Demographic : Josei
Size : 26 Volumes ( ongoing, almost fully available online few chapters missing )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=548
Art : Artist is a bit older than most, so the art is very 90s Shoujo-esque. It takes a bit to get used to but it grows on you.
Story : Post-apocalyptic world in which 5 teams of 7 were frozen and then un-frozen X years in the future in a world devoid of human life. The main protagonist is a pretty ferocious girl, but she isn’t dumb mind you. She’s also calm and composed. Although, she’s not the only character Point of view you’ll see. This story is really about survival, although there’s a few times where the mystery surrounding the world they live in is explained a bit. This, with another manga, are my favourite post-apoc mangas ( I'll post the other one at a later date ).
Magician
Genre: Webtoon, Adventure, Fantasy
Size : 300+ Chapters ( ongoing, almost fully available online aside a few chapters )
MU Link : http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=54097
Art : The art is a bit rough especially the first 50ish chapters. Again, as most webtoon this is in full colour rather than black and white.
Story : Two kids join this Immortal magician ( hence the title ) and travel the world. Good ol’ adventure with a cart and a horse, stopping by towns and doing adventure things. There's sword fighting, magic, dragons. Your typical DnD shit.
Voila, this used to be 15 but 2 titles were already on the reader so I removed them.
Hey gimme some credit I made 2 out of the 3! I didn't make a manga thread cuz everything I read is already here anyway...well except for bleach which I still don't know why I bother with lol. I watched the Neuro anime...I got bored half way through haven't watched since, I like the ending theme.

I totally gave up on Bleach once Aizen was done with and everything had settled down, because that's where the story naturally ended. Everything after was a tossed-together second series that just happened to have the same characters, but I couldn't be bothered being invested in it.
As to Naruto, there's only so much Sasuke a person can withstand.
Heads up people, Seven Seas will be publishing Bodacious Space Pirates on 2015
(We should flood them with requests for Qualia the Purple, according to their FAQ they should have access to it.)

Nez, you have no endurance. however you are right. Bleach has meandered to the mundane, but it's still OK and Naruto. Ugh! too many volumes, so little money. what's a girl to do?

Hey, I put up with Whiny Boy up to where he got kidnapped by Snakey's minions. I probably should have just left off after the end of the Gaara arc, that at least was another natural stopping point following a pretty satisfying battle.
As to stuff I actually like, here's what's actually on my iPad as regular reads/re-reads/re-re-re-re-re-reads (going to skip out most of the stuff that's here on the reader):
666 Satan* Fun shounen stuff, art's a little dodgy early on but improves. Lots of BS Christian mysticism trappings.
After School Nightmare Psychological...horror? Thriller? Hard to pin down, a story about a character who's literally half-female/half-male who clings to a male identity, finding themselves repeatedly being confronted with a shared dream-reality where they come in conflict with other students for the right to graduate.
Ai-Ren Slightly hentai post-apocalyptic story about a terminally ill boy who obtains an artificial life form as companion/lover, who ends up enriching his last months against the backdrop of humanity's decline and fall.
Aria/Aqua Pure scenery porn about cute girls piloting gondolas in a Venice transplanted to Mars, now a water world. Mostly slice-of-life SF with a hint of mysticism.
Baby Steps Tennis manga about a very analytical and meticulous guy on the road to becoming a pro. Contains a surprisingly natural het romance that doesn't make me go "ugh".
Cat Street About a former child star and now shut-in who meets others with personal problems at a free school, and they all enrich each other and eventually find success. Another light-touch het romance among the self-improvement.
Cross Game Baseball manga about a boy with hidden talents and the family four sisters he's close to, one of whom died when she was young but whose influence still affects them all. LIght and fluffy, with a lot of gentle humour.
Dengeki Daisy Hacker-based adventure manga, about a level-headed schoolgirl and the yankee janitor who protects her. Manages to subvert a lot of tropes, and smartly written despite the sometimes unrealistic hacker stuff.
Ghost Hunt Story about a girl who becomes a part-time worker with a psychic investigation team, and eventually finds herself developing abilities of her own. Good character interaction and lots of spooky stuff.
Hikaru No Go Pretty famous manga largely responsible for the resurgence of Go in Japan, plus a lot of interest in the west.
Hourou Musukou aka "Wandering Son", a story about a couple of young transgender kids (mostly the MtF kid) growing up and facing various challenges. Same author as Sweet Blue Flowers, so expect a lot of sameface.
Id Korean heroic fantasy, very D&D-ish, lots of dwarf jokes, a bit crude here and there.
Katsu Amateur boxing manga, pretty lighthearted since it's Adachi. Young guy who takes up boxing because the girl he likes is the daughter of a boxer, without realizing that she hates boxing and boxers. But despite himself he finds that he actually has talent and things go from there. Don't read it looking for Hajime No Ippo, totally different feel.
Luna Legend Tsukihime Based on a visual novel, the most powerful vampire teams up with a human who can kill the unkillable, good urban horror/adventure stuff with characters that make it worth reading.
Mahou Sensei Negima Pretty famous, I think most of us know this one. Best bits are all Jack Rakan, let's be honest here.
Mahou Tsukai Kurohime Pretty over-the-top adventure about the greatest sorceress being condemned to a child's body after failing to overthrow heaven, and the boy who decided he's going to protect her. Goes some pretty interesting directions once you get past the initial setup.
Mainichi Seitan Unquestionably the best yaoi/shounen ai I've ever read. A group of four brothers, the eldest a SF magazine editor, end up sharing a house with the magazine's star writer and his adopted son. Turns out the eldest and the writer have a past together, and by the end of it there are three male/male couples. Rarely takes the easy way out on the various relationships, and things always run deeper than you first think. Highly recommended.
Mushishi Do I really need to describe this?
Pieta This is on the reader, but deserves mention. Two girls with mental health issues find each other despite forces working against one of them. Relatively short but packs a punch.
Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles Mostly there to support XXXholic, which is the better series in my eyes.
XXXholic I love this one, a take on the "sorcerer's apprentice" concept that makes Harry Potter look shallow. Plus, Watanuki is both funnier and more appealing than Harry.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Like Aria, scenery porn in its purest form. I could look at some of those panels all day. Sweet, lovely apocalypse story set during the slow, calm descent of humanity. No panic, no regret, just one long contented sigh.

Aria/Aqua Pure scenery porn about cute girls piloting gondolas in a Venice transplanted to Mars, now a water world. Mostly slice-of-life SF with a hint of mysticism.
I've been into Amanchu (by the same mangaka of Aria) ever since I watched the Aria animes, freaking love her art. Many translation groups have taken and dropped it as you go down the chapters, releases have been glacially slow... Rather unfortunate. These are the ppl who currently have it, seems to be their only thing going on: http://teatimescans.wordpress.com/

I was a bit disappointed in the Aria anime. The animation quality didn't nearly live up to the original artwork, and indeed was pretty sloppy in spots with people's feet sliding on the ground as they walked and so on. The third series was a bit better, at least. I did appreciate how some of the stories added new information to the world, such as more about what happened when the water was released, and more of a connection with Ai, who seemed a bit of an afterthought in the manga.
Pity they never did an episode that wrapped up Akari's relationship with Cait Sith, although they did the ones that should have led up to it.
My favorites are One Piece, Fairy Tail, Fuuka, Wallman --> (nothing for kids!). These guys have a nice collection of manga that I like as well. www.primehentai.com
I'm still not buying Fuuka, everything is going far too well for the MC when it's being made by the artists that has the biggest boner over fucking MCs over for 100+ chapters until they finally get his happy life
I like Yoshiteru in manga, he's a Shogun and that's a lot like a general I guess.
I finally remembered to read the last volume of "The Legend of Mother Sarah". I felt like it was a good ending, stopped where it should really.
One thing is for sure, mom's are tough.

Yoshiteru, huh? Like this?
Yes, exactly like that.
So the Naruto manga is ending finally does anyone care?
So the Naruto manga is ending finally does anyone care?
meh, yes and no. it's been going on for so long, at this point it's more for the sake of a conclusion than anything else.
Alright so i started reading this Super Doctor K thing...
Jesus Christ it's glorious! It makes no attempt to hide that it's a parody of Hokuto no Ken but even so it takes itself seriously at all times! Fascinating!
Too bad there's only 4 chapters for now
