Having re-read the current featured series (and remembered a few others), I've once again come to realize that as cute as Itou Hachi's art is, as much as she's known for her loli, clearly her true talent and passion lies in drawing trains.

Her oneshots have been omitted in the English versions of the Eclair anthologies. For literally no reason. Yen Press don't deserve your money.

Well, "without a stated reason" isn't the same as "for literally no reason". I think we can all imagine a reason, whether we agree with it or not.

I remember being (depressingly?) impressed Seven Seas didn't hack away at Syrup Vol 2 to strip out Left Leg's Shackle like this. Most of Itou Hachi's stuff is not my thing, and I recall those oneshots being pretty uncomfortable to read, but publishers and their editorial power already deserve enough scrutiny without letting them also misrepresent more palatable versions of entire works as the full thing to audiences that won't know any better. Reading a lot of anthologies also made me appreciate how strongly story placement affects the tone of subsequent stories and the whole tonal flow of the book.

oof censorship. Does anyone know if Yen Press is censoring anything else? I've been buying various series from them for awhile...and this makes me worried.

Yen Press apparently have had a few more or less deserved shitstorms in the past, most notoriously probably about Mushoku Tensei, exemplified by a scene in which our protagonist, instead of being a horndog and trying to pull down a sleeping girl's panties, chivalrously decides to pull her shirt over her belly so she doesn't catch a cold, drastically changing the characterization of Rudeus in this scene. Mind boggling. (reference: https://boundingintocomics.com/books/seven-seas-admits-to-heavy-handed-censorship-of-classroom-of-the-elite-and-mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation)

Oh that rings a bell, I don't follow the series at all but I remember some drama around the translation at one point. I don't think I ever knew the specific context, and yeah that's a huge change. I find the reality of what the character did uncomfortable, though I also think it's important to face those feelings and not censor the work.

Also I know they publish Murciélago, which seems like an...interesting choice for a censorship loving publisher. Has that been censored by them or anything else?

Yeah, I'd go so far as to say that's literally the point of the scene. You're not supposed to like what Rudeus is doing at that stage.

Yeah I've been reading a few chapters of that occasionally here on the reader. Really makes you wonder. It might be tied to what kind of series it is and what kind of perceived target audience it is, meaning that Murcielago, being the overtly and gratuitously sexualized and ultraviolent romp that it is, might be fine. Wishful thinking, probably, and I'm not sure that would sufficiently explain omitting Itou Hachi from Éclair.

So the cut Eclair chapters are:

The Little Bird and the Brassiere (Blanche)
The Inferiority Complex is Not Over (Bleue)
The Twitter of Girls and Waking of Shyness (Rouge)
The Promise I Made to Eve (Orange)

And yeah, I get it. These are all onee-loli stories and varying degrees of unprintable. Her chapter in the original Eclair, Belle the Rabbit and the Wolf, is intact but the age of the younger character is left vague. I wonder if they still got flak for it at the time.

I'm mostly annoyed that I didn't know about this, and haven't read any of these, until just now. Some of those are forty pages long, and they're just gone from the book. I wish publishers would at least note the cuts, like a movie edited for TV.

This has been on my mind recently because I've been binging manwha over the holidays, and those webtoon platforms are really heavy with the knife. I hit the obviously-edited sex scene at the end of Ring My Bell and suddenly the entire experience is in question. Were there earlier cuts that I didn't notice? It was a terrible way to close out an otherwise good series.

Hmm, yeah it's definitely peculiar that's for sure.

Also in response to Brevity of Mammals,

suddenly the entire experience is in question

I wanted to respond to this in particular, because I think that's one of the biggest issues with censorship. Where it makes you wonder if you get the whole genuine experience, or if other things got removed. It definitely adds a layer of speculation and worry that dampens the whole experience at the very least.

That transparency would be nice to see, but that's never really been the case, neither for editing movies nor other media, and I kinda don't think it's viewed as desirable by the powers that be.
There once was a German website that documented cuts made to movies (and I think other media) for their German version (schnittberichte.de, literally "cut reports"). The site was shut down due to youth protection issues forever ago. I'm not sure whether it was because they sometimes maybe had images showing the (usually violent) content that had been cut or whether the fact they collected evidence of otherwise undocumented cuts was a thorn in the BPjM's (German youth protection authority) side. They were probably hosted from within Germany, so it could easily just have been "you're providing unrestricted access from within Germany to age restricted content, you can't do that".

Schnittberichte.com has been online again for a long time now. Sadly, there does not seem to be a larger site that documents censorship to date, yet I believe everybody can edit there internationally. It also covers some obscure media that was never released in Germany.
