Oh I'm so glad this didn't get weird and creepy and was just wholesome.

After all of those stories of pets being depicted as humans though, there is some room to speculate further that maybe not all is as it seems. If we want to get degenerate about it, maybe the little girl isn't actually that age at all, but is an adult 'little'? Maybe she's just being portrayed as small, because she is currently in little-space, and is in a relationship with two 'caregivers'. That's one way to ruin the innocence of this story.

This is technically incorrect (the best kind of incorrect). The idea of social degeneration actually predates the nazis by a good two centuries. "Entartet" means something different, and "degeneriert" (three guesses as to what that means) did in fact see a sharp decline in usage coinciding with the rise of the NSDAP.

If anything, it's a french fascist term, having plateaued from decline in under the Pétainist thanks to the somehow not even most controversial Nobel laureate Alexis Carrel re-popularizing it. (Idk how to compare two different corpora with a single link so just look at the axis labels to see the term being 8 times more popular in french.)
