It's possible there's a lot people out there who get held back LONGER than that.
I know a relative who stopped his high school to work. After some years he came back to to try and finish his high school and then be able to get to college with all the money he worked for.

There are a lot of people like that in my school. 10% because of hospitalization, and 90% had to repeat a year(more than one time) due to there behavior(got expelled again and again, got F in every subjects, etc).

Not possible in my country I think. I dunno, if you have a decease going on for several years, but if you just have to repeat a class, because your grades were too bad, you get kicked out after some years, gg no re. From 11+th class its actually just one year fail tolerance, so its highly unlikely to have a 21+ years old class mate. The only way to get your High School degree is to visit a special "evening school", where other 20+ adults gather to get their degree.

Well, in my country, it's mandatory to go to school until at least 16. Not that the government will let you down, but past 16, no school is obligated to take you (unless you fork some money) or you can make your case that it was totally not your fault (long illness, bad parenting, etc...). So, a 23 years old, -working- highschooler is really unlikely.

Here, I think it's just an absurd twist added in to poke fun at the age gap trope.

I never knew so many different schools had different cases. Thank y'all for the info! In my opinion I never decided to look up actual info of other schools and assumed each school was similar to my own in which if you are 19 or older you are not allowed to be a student so if you get left back twice, you get kicked out. All of this is really interesting so I'm surprised(′・ω・`)
