This is the yuri version of an old het (and, I would assume, yaoi) trope, even Toradora did it. But it's great to see the yuri version.
Re: the live show, if you read ahead in the manga, you should have little problem understanding most of it without subtitles. The first Japanese movie I watched without pausing and rewinding was the live action movie of Maria-sama ga Miteru, because I already knew the plot and much of the dialogue.
