There are some moments, not many of 'em but all the doujins are quite enough i must say xD Personally i'm glad i watched it for the sake of Aoi, Ichigo and Ran :3 The first season's the best

If you don't play the games, how do you invest yourself in those touhou ships? It's kinda hard to understand, but it seems so wonderful

I don't play at all, not being a fan of shmups. What I did was simply start reading, and occasionally looking at a wiki when I really couldn't figure it out. Maybe start with a longer series like Silent Sinner In Blue, which at least gives you an idea of who several of the more common characters, like Yukari, Marisa, Reimu, the SDM group, etc. are.

Forget everything that you just read about Marceline in the previous comments.
Marceline was born half human half demon. She was turned into a vampire when she was bitten by the Vampire King when she was 18-ish. All the powers that she has now are from when she was a vampire hunter, by being half demon she was able to suck out the powers of the vampire from their soul. You can learn this from the 8 part series in Adventure Time, called Stakes.
