Funny how lots of people were defending Nanase at first. But I'm glad that everyone seems to be on the same page now!

Someone is gonna get hit with a tennis racket in the next chapter.

That would be hilarious

Hmm interesting read. I still don't think Nanase is a shit girlfriend, she's just not the right person for Yuni and Yuni is not the right person for her. Yet they cling to it for different reasons. I want Yuki to go full yandere hahaha. I hope Fuuko and Yuni can heal, after a magnificent shit-show, and end up together. Cos most likely NOW, Yuni will realize she really loves Fuuko, right...right?

only thing is, we see in this very chapter that Yuni isn't the only one to fall "victim" to Nanase's behavior, as Yuki is being confronted with the fact that the all-important historical closeness she's shared with Nanase—the very one that has her convinced that she deserves Nanase's love over anyone else, the the point she spread rumors and destroyed Nanase's friendship in middle school—is only recognized by Yuki, and Nanase thinks nothing of knowing her since kindergarten.

It's not that "Nanase and Yuni aren't right for one another", it's that Nanase is incredibly selfish, or at best blindingly self-interested, and unless you have the same hobbies and interests that she does, she'll put no effort into trying to understand or identify your perspective on things. Even with her declaring that she'd 'beat Fuuko' in maintaining a relationship with Yuni, she then immediately fell back into the same insensitive treatment of her girlfriend that lead to Yuni cheating in the first place. The camping trip was nothing like what she'd sold Yuni; she badmouthed Yuni's mother to her face over marshmallows when Yuni has talked about how important her mom is to her before; she signed up for tennis because she assumed Yuni was interested, when Yuni herself (in the very flashback we see in this chapter) said she had no desire to play tennis whatsoever.
Even her mom understands that something's wrong. When Nanase set up this bowling thing, her mom is the one that pushed her to invite Yuni. Because Nanase's mother spoke to Yuni during the camping trip (after Nanase abandoned her all afternoon), found out how close they were, and knows just how oblivious and unthinking her own daughter is. She worried that someone as important (and liked by her) as Yuni would be forgotten by Nanase, which is the only reason Yuni was invited to begin with.
Nanase sees and hears what she wants to, and doesn't take the time to actually listen. She's effectively paying lip service to Yuni now upon her limited understanding of what it means to be in a relationship, and even then manages to sideline Yuni for Yuki and for her volleyball stuff and simply doing whatever she feels in the moment.

that is why people are critical of her. You're correct that she and Yuni aren't good for one another, but it's not simply because Yuni's an emotional mess who cheated on her. It's because Nanase isn't ready for a relationship whatsoever, until she learns to think about others and not only about herself and her own wants and needs. Hopefully, Yuki is about to (maybe hopefully metaphorically) beat that lesson into her in short order, now that she herself found out how bad Nanase really is.

We're remembering that Yuni has been consistently cheating on her right

Like. The reality is they're both teenagers, neither of them are ready for a relationship because neither of them has developed any kind of emotional maturity. Which is fair, because they're kids. What's weird is the vindictiveness some people here seem to have towards Nanase - and only Nanase? - for being a dumb teenager. She's not a monster, she's been insensitive and hurt some people's feelings, but christ the way you write about her you'd think she was some sort of serial abuser.

Nanase is horrible but in a very mundane way. It’s not her fault she’s just a bit of an idiot fratboy cursed to be a lesbian who let’s be honest are usually pretty insane. She wouldn’t be like an officer or anything but if it came down to it Nanase would probably be a Nazi

I just discovered this manga today and read the whole thing, along with some comments on the most impactful chapters. It’s funny to see the divided opinions about the characters.

For me, the only decent character of the lot is Nanase. The only thing we can reproach her with is her meaningless fight for the relationship with Yuni even though it’s objectively over. But she’s just an inexperienced high school girl and many people probably made the same type of mistake with their first love. It’s frustrating for the reader, but it’s actually quite realistic. The stuff with her "neglecting" Yuni in the beginning is overblown.

I don’t get how it is possible to defend Yuni. Morally the worst character, with zero accountability. Don’t get me wrong, she works great as a character in the story, and her train of thought is often very well done and interesting to read because very realistic.

Fuu is manipulative and a bit of psychopath. Her backstory helps us understand why and I have empathy for her, but it doesn’t change the fact. Unless I missed it, we still don’t have any explanation as to why she’s "loved" Yuni from the start.

Yuki started out well, but of course after chapter 35 I changed my mind.

Overall Fuu/Yuni are well-matched as a crazy/dysfunctional couple, and if somehow Yuki gets a big redemption arc Yuki/Nanase would be ok. It’s not great but at least they seem to care about each other more than Fuu/Yuni.

Why are you giving so much leeway towards Nanase but then ignore that Yuni is also a high school student who hasn't been in a relationship before and is also learning how to deal with her emotions. I feel like every character is morally gray and have their own problems to work on.

Funny how lots of people were defending Nanase at first. But I'm glad that everyone seems to be on the same page now!

Cheating is universally reviled regardless of whether the cheater had a sympathetic reason or not, and Nanase sucks in much more subtle ways than the other girls, so it makes sense people would see her as a blameless victim. Plus, the only thing she really did wrong at first was prioritize her volleyball club over Yuni, which is an innocent mistake to make when you're a teenager navigating your first serious relationship.

I also felt bad for her until we got to the cucking scene where she was totally unwilling to tell Yuni she mattered more than her club lol. And then after all that, came to the conclusion that she could have her cake and eat it too if she just tried harder. Nanase's problem is that she's far more preoccupied with having signifiers of success than actually knowing and understanding the people in her life. At least the other girls are aware of their shortcomings.

because the person I responded to was specifically talking about Nanase wasn't problematic within the narrative?

Of course Yuni's awful, she pretended she was "being forced" by Fuuko into infidelity until chapter 10 when she herself pushed herself onto Fuuko in the hotel room because Nanase didn't give her the "yeah you're cute" answer she wanted after ignoring her all day.
I'm not here to defend Yuni, which I guess is why you decided to be vague with your "some people" phrasing instead of simply saying "you", but the fact is a good chunk of the reader base were putting Nanase up as this super pitiable blameless victim, when the signs have been there since the first chapter and become more clear as additional context is added in that none of them are good people, and Nanase is a part of that. Sure, her awfulness is far less bombastic compared to the other four, and she's the most "mundane" when it comes to the problems her character injects into the series.
But Yuni's shit, and Fuuko's, and Mashiro's, and likely soon Yuki's, have been written into the record ad nauseam already. Nanase getting the focus now is because there's finally a concrete case to be made for why she's not merely "a dumb teenager".

Besides—I think it's easily arguable that Nanase's done and is doing more than a bit of her own emotional variant of cheating when it comes to Yuki, and even her volleyball club. Just because she's not literally fucking her bestie or her teammates doesn't mean she's not actively contributing to things going sideways in her own way, and has been for the majority of the series.

That's a very fair point. While Yuni can be infuriating as well, we can see she is still struggling with the situation, feeling bad both for both girls. And while it doesn't excuse what she is doing, it makes her human. But Nanase doesn't have an inner voice (or at least, not that I remember so far), and she seems not preoccupied at all with her actions. Which makes her look like a very self centered person that doesn't reflect on what she is doing.

In a way, while she is central to the story, she is not supposed to be a main character. Since the beginning, I mostly saw her as a device plot.

It's even harder to stop myself from posting fan fiction Nanase going on fascist adjacent "just asking questions" rants while pretending to be clueless than it was to avoid ball jokes.

Anyway this is now canon. Sorry everyone. Nanase is alt-right. As we speak, is probably posting some screed online about how affirmative action is discriminatory and people should earn sports scholarships through own effort if they want to get ahead.

There's a reason why we don't see Nanase's twitter account.

I feel there's three possible points people who defend Nanase miss:

1 - I feel one reason some "defend" Yuni is because in the beginning the Yuni hate felt really overblown at times, like, I honestly don't think anyone will argue against the cheating being bad but some people talked about her as if she was some unrepentant sociopathic monster who was cheating for the lulz cause she's eeeeeevil instead of literally being a dumb teenager who also has quite a few problems

Sometimes it also felt like some people put Nanase on a pedestal as the poor little victim who could do no wrong, arguably the same for Yuki which is why some wanted them to get together, they were the good guys while Yuni was the eeeeevil cheater who deserved to suffer

I say "defend" cause in my opinion a lot of the time it's less actually defending Yuni and simply arguing against the exagerated caricature some created of her, which funnily enough became easier and easier as the story progress and we see Nanase isn't really all that

2 - I think one thing some miss is that yes, Yuni, Fuuko and Yuki sucks but that just because Nanase sucks less that doesn't mean she doesn't suck, this is not a competition really, Nanase just sucks in a more mudane and arguably more infuriating way, hear me out:

  • Yuni: we see again and again that mentally and emotionally she's not exactly the most stable and has her own issues, honestly she arguably shouldn't be in a relationship to begin with lol, but at the same time we see that many times she openly admits to herself what she is doing is bad and should stop, of course she doesn't and emotionally is all over the place so she still sucks but she still cknowledges that she is bad

  • Fuuko: she's the most honest of all, she never denied she's bad, if anything she openly embraces really, of course that doesn't change the fact that she sucks just because she's honest about what she does

  • Yuki: she is arguably in my opinion the most malicious of them cause she acts like she's good but did some pretty bad stuff without any remorse, I honestly doubt she feels an ounce of guilt for the pain she caused Nanase but hey, she got Nanase on her side so everything was ok in her head

  • and then comes Nanase, she is arguably the only "good" person, nothing she does is really malicious, like, we saw little by little she was a shitty girlfriend, kinda neglicent, insensitive and so on but we couldn't really give her much shit cause she's literally just a dumb teenager making dumb decisions, it could be frustrating but it was understandable

At least until she finds out the cheating that is, she chose to continue with Yuni and promised to get better but what we get? She repeating the same mistakes even after communicating with Yuni, she never really listen or relate to Yuni and continues to be negligent, insensitve, self centered, she makes her assumptions like about Yuni mother or her maybe now being interested in tennis and rolls with it, or leaves Yuni alone even after she said she didn't want to be left alone, there's various examples really

We were able to excuse Nanase behavior cause before it was just a clueless dumb teenager doing innocent mistakes but after she promised to get better and clearly didn't change at all it goes from frustrating to infuriating that she's making the same mistakes all over again

Nanase is basically the classic "no thoughts, head empty" meme unless it's about the club, even when Nanase and Yuni communicate she still doesn't listen and doesn't change at all, I suspect that for some people the exact fact that she's not malicious about that just makes it worse, especially for people who had to deal with someone who just doesn't listen and never learn or change

I feel this chapter really settles how Nanase is those things cause Yuki world just collapsed from finding out Nanase never really saw her as her bestie lol, depending on what next chapter shows it's pretty much the last nail that yes Nanase is negligent, insensitive, self centered and so on and can't think of anything but her little world that is entirely focused on the club

3 - last but not least, cheating aside I feel Yuni, Fuuko and Nanase can feel a little too dramatic compared to Nanase, Yuni is a mess, Fuuko is too openly evil wanting to steal Yuni, Yuki is two faced bitch and her attitude can be hard to take seriously, Nanase meanwhile is just too mundane

Still wanting to be with Yuni aside since that can feel unrealistic then Nanase attitude as a whole is too normal, too mundane, banal, she's not a bitch, she's not malicious, she's not evil or anything like that, she's just an airhead too focused on the club that she completely miss everything else, she can be called selfish and insensitive but that's pretty on brand for a teenager really

Until she decided to still be with Yuni after knowing about the cheating, that completely change context of things cause after promising to change she just don't change at all, I can't help but feel that for some people it hits too close home, Yuni, Fuuko and Yuki can feel too unrealistic while Nanase we can pretty easily find many people like her

Honestly? I feel that if Nanase was as bad as everyone else nobody would bat an eye at it but it's exactly the lack of malice and the mundanity / banality of how she sucks that ironically can make her feel like worse than she is, the way she sucks is just too relatable, the more you had to deal with people like her the worse you'll feel about her as a whole

We can argue all we want about how Yuni, Fuuko and Yuki sucks and who's the worst or how Nanase sucks the least but the fact that her brand of suckness is so mundane can feel too personal while the others feel too much like typical dramatic romance, her mundanity ironically stands out like a sore thumb exactly because you can easily meet people like her, worst, might have or had a relationship with someone like her who never listen or changes and they're just, ugh, the worst

Anyway, at least that's my take on why some people "defend" Yuni or at least bashes Nanase, no amount of "b-but the others are worse" will change that Nanase still plain sucks

I feel there's three possible points people who defend Nanase miss:

Not quoting the entier post but the more backstory we got from Yuni and Fuuko, the more we got to understand them. Even though they act in a shitty way, we can at least understanding why they act that way. They both had difficult/traumatic experience and despite they awful action, they both have a lovely side. Fuuko is very caring and seems to truly love Yuni, and the way Yuni loves and cares for her mother is also very touching.

On the other side, Nanase is just super self-centered, and doesn't have anything good to balance that. So sure, she is not as bad, but she has nothing going for her, really. Honestly, she looks like a NPC with no inner thoughts. Enhanced why I think of her as just a plot device.
