But what part of the statement "These translations are mine," is false? I'm not the author, but what I translate is my own intellectual property. I'm not trying to say "Hey no one else is allowed to translate". I never told the Chinese-> English translator to stop, because it was none of my business. If people find someone who's willing to translate from Korean -> any language, I'm not gonna tell them to stop. If it isn't my translation, I don't care. But when people start stealing and using my translation without telling me how they're using it, that's when I'm going to care.

You say that I'm acting childish by not sharing my translations. But why on earth am I obligated to share anything in the first place? To a bunch of random people that I don't even know? That's called "fan entitlement". Scanlators aren't obligated to do shit for anyone.

You say that /u/ is working hard to rightfully provide said needy fans with scans of WDFS. Where's the effort in stealing someone else's translations? Because I don't see it. It's so ironic that /u/ had to resort to stealing my translations like a bunch of desperate whores, after shitting on me for doing what I think is right.

Apparently even the overlay wasn't enough to stop those idiots, but they couldn't do anything once the Chinese translators stopped (until they stole my translations). And if that's what I have to do as well, then I'm more than willing to do so. If my translations end up doing more harm than good for the authors, I don't see the point in continuing. Plenty of awesome international fans have spent their hard-earned money on this manhwa. I know it's not gonna be fair for them if I stop, but I'll try to figure something out.

/u/ crybabies can complain all day about how once something is up on the internet, the author forfeits any rightful ownership, but that's not gonna help them find another translator anytime soon.

Help

Hi there. Is it not possible to read the chapters in English on Lezhin app? Everything works fine for me until the step that I supposed to be redirected to the age verification page, the part where I suppose to choose the third button for international user didn't show up like in the instructions.

@bluebearies

you have your point, and the others have theirs. there is no point in continuing this further since you are clearly trying to pick a fight. it is obvious you are simply refusing to accept and listen to other people's replies. its like talking to walls around here. so please, stop. because it is embarrassing to see you try so hard to argue your way through.
(to others on this thread: i'm sorry i sound harsh, i don't normally talk like that, but yeah, "blueberries" is my biggest pet peeve, so, apologies.)

Lol.. ok sorry, I've been a smug (I mean it). And yes, I purposely write your name wrongly. Why? Just checking if you those who only care about politically correct statements and nothing else. In other words, you seemed to only believe in "articulated" statement and care nothing about the fans? I said from the start I am not against either party (pay vs not paying). I just don't like it when one party policing other party because they want to monopolize. This I do not agree. If you don't understand what I am trying to say, then... sorry... I am not 'articulate' enough for you.

@Meru @halmoni

However, how that they're directly stealing Halmoni's translations and claiming them as their own, this is where we must interfere.
But what part of the statement "These translations are mine," is false? I'm not the author, but what I translate is my own intellectual property.

I agree since halmoni has said not to post elsewhere. Now why the idiots would do such a thing to jeopardize the relationship with Lezhin? oh yeaa, those stupid "fans" obviously (They have always done that from day 1 manga was created). If I were them, I would have asked your permission, then re-write your translation so it's not a direct plagiarism. Intellectual property, you say... hmm... You know, once an author sells their rights to a publisher, they have no jurisdiction (or very little) in terms of what they can say about their distribution rights, agree? In plain (rude) English, halmoni, you are feeling what the most publishers are feeling - getting ripped and whored!!! And no, I didn't mean authors. Most authors are ok with it because it's "free publicity" but almost ALL publishers get so pissed because their profit is assumed diminished. This is when money comes first before a good series. In short, what is your status here for WDTFS? Are you a "fan" or a "publisher"? If you want to act as a publisher, I respect that. In fact, I suggest you to go and ask Lezhin for a CONTINUOUS FAT COMMISSION for bringing new English readers and policing the other (poorly) fan-translated versions. If you feel you are doing it for the author, well, then, donate a portion of your income to them directly, instead of benefiting Lezhin 100% (Yes, I am a business grad and everything is about COSTS and BENEFITS).

This is a little off topic but one day, I was walking pass two little kids fighting (4-5yrs old++?) over a toy. Their mom said, "Sharing is caring". I scoff at that poetic phrase as people only share when benefit(s) are returned or when there's a consequence for disobeying. Even a little kid knows that. (Darn this is really off topic)... I guess you are a fan who (unconsciously) became a publisher to benefit Lezhin (well eventually it will trickle to the authors and fans). If I am wrong, I am sorry... Please fill in the blanks. I AM A ______ FOR LEZHIN. And as for those who ripped your translations, please stop. You are like a kid who doesn't understand the word, "No". Just sulk and cry all you want. Go find other ways to get them translated or go get a part time job and pay for the coins at Lezhin. Grow up already. PORN IS BAD FOR YOU. Look what this series is doing to you, crazy bitches!

You're contradicting yourself in every other sentence, so I honestly have no idea what you're trying to say.

If I were them, I would have asked your permission, then re-write your translation so it's not a direct plagiarism.

How is this any better? I wouldn't have given permission anyways, but rewriting my translation wouldn't fix anything. Finding another completely new Korean to English translator, I'm fine with. Taking my translation, which I spent 2-3 hours translating and editing (along w/ some qc-er's), and spending 5 minutes to change the wording here and there in order to say "Yay we didn't plagiarize, we totally changed the wording so it's our original work nao XDDDDDD" would've pissed me off even more.

Intellectual property, you say... hmm... You know, once an author sells their rights to a publisher, they have no jurisdiction (or very little) in terms of what they can say about their distribution rights, agree?

I'm pretty sure the authors still have the rights to their own original works. They did agree to whatever terms the publishing company presented them with, after all. And it was also stated in Lezhin's warning, which I'm sure you failed to read. "Those who screenshot or illegally distribute pay-to-view manhwa without notice will be violating copyright laws, the Juvenile Protection Act, as well as the authors' ownership of the manhwa, ..."

Most authors are ok with it because it's "free publicity"

But you're not the author of WDFS. You don't know what their opinions are. So why does it matter whether other authors are okay with it or not?

This is when money comes first before a good series. In short, what is your status here for WDTFS? Are you a "fan" or a "publisher"?

When did I ever say that I was doing this for profit? I'm a translator, and that's that. I only translated so that international fans who were interested in buying the manhwa would be able to read and understand the story. Your argument about me being a fan or "publisher" makes no sense at all, because I clearly stated a long time ago that I wasn't doing this for any kind of personal profit. Do you seriously think a major webtoon company is going to pay me for what I'm doing? Get real.

If you feel you are doing it for the author, well, then, donate a portion of your income to them directly, instead of benefiting Lezhin 100%

  1. Bring in new readers for the authors
  2. Money goes to Lezhin
  3. Money goes to the authors
  4. ???
  5. Profit

I don't see where me personally paying the authors comes into play here. You may be a business major grad, but you're certainly not an expert on publishing companies or on Lezhin itself. So stop getting ahead of yourself.

I scoff at that poetic phrase as people only share when benefit(s) are returned or when there's a consequence for disobeying.

Of course as a translator, my sacred duty is to provide free translations for every manhwa on this planet as well as providing complementary back massages + a $5,000 check, for every one of our dearest readers. How could I have forgotten??????? Sorry for being an asshole and caring about myself more than a bunch of strangers on the internet. I'm heartless, I know.

Honestly, do I have to make a list in order for people to understand our intentions?

1. Halmoni and the staff get no profit from translating.
2. The translations however are Halmoni's. You want her shit? Ask for permission.
3. We are not forcing or commanding anyone to do anything. We are simply asking that you use the overlay method to avoid any consequences that may occur if otherwise. You don't want to use it? Fine. We'll leave it up to Lezhin.
4. People who paid for the comic and are respectful; hey, we love you, we'll update you with any new chapters or tutorials, thanks for being chill.
5. otakuJin, please just let it go jfc.

Bollocks! Everybody knows this is the true list:

  1. Scanlate.
  2. ???
  3. PROFIT!

Seriously though, does anyone really think they were making money on this?

@Meru

Do not try to jusitfy why it's "right". If you want to discuss more, feel free to drop by my tumblr.

Oops, I forgot about this... Sorry I don't know how to use tumblr (-_-).

@halmoni
1. I am suggesting you to go get commission from Lezhin. (I KNOW you are doing it for free now, but you can't see the biggest winner is Lezhin? And the biggest loser = you/ translating team?)
2. The authors said they will go with the publisher's terms. Do you know what this means? They practically have no say in it. Tsk, I rest my case.
3. I know you won't be sharing your translation. It's already understood from day 1. It's a sarcasm for IP when one uses plagiarism. Sigh... pls just ignore it.

Guys I rest my case. As a manga reader, I just want to RE-ITERATE that I am neither for nor against those who pay/ do not pay. I just don't like you (fans) policing other translators = fans (Chinese to English, Spanish, etc) as if you guys are the publishers of the Eng version/ want to monopolize it. You don't own them and you don't work for Lezhin so IF other fans use halmoni's, then, yes go pick on/ sue them. Else, please MYOB (Mind your own business).

That's great but we don't want money and we don't care if Lezhin is the "winner" because we weren't competing for shit in the first place.

Thank you for your opinion. We all have our likes and dislikes. Conversation closed.

This is from a while back in the conversation, but I wanted to note that it is 100% false. The internet is full of artists and writers complaining about just how false it is in fact, and how it's almost always an after-the-fact justification for stealing their shit. The rest of the time, it's part of an effort to get them to produce new work for free.

The fact is, "free publicity" (sometimes called "exposure") never, ever benefits the writer or artist. It's a total self-serving myth. Here's some reading on the subject, if you're interested.

Here's some more.

The thought process when chapters first come out for WDTFS must be very similar to that of FF.

The 5 Stages of Manhwa Grief

1. Denial

You initially deny that the chapter is out. You pretend it doesn't exist so you won't look at it.

2. Anger

Eventually, you give in and you read the raws. You can't understand shit, so you curse yourself for not understanding Korean.

3. Bargaining

Screw this, you'll get it done all by yourself! You find ways to type out the Korean or to use image recognition, then you run it through Google Translate. But all it does is spit out incomprehensible gibberish.

4. Depression

You give up all hope of trying to figure out what is going on in the chapter. Salty tears are wept.

5. Acceptance

You accept... halmoni as your yuri messiah, and the translations are bestowed upon you.

Indeed, the path to recovery is long and painful. And weekly. :3
