^^^ If all you're looking for is a harem, there are dozens of boring examples (most gacha where the protagonist can reasonably be assumed to be a woman). But games where the characters are developed enough that there are canon or strong fanon ships among the non-protagonist cast ? Now that's where the art of yuri thrives.

As someone who likes gacha protag Yuri, I don't think it's a boring choice or that any of the girls need to fight each other for which is the "best" one. I rather put my effort into enjoying the various Yuri ship art lol

Depends on the game. Stelle feels like a fully fleshed out character in her own right so I'm able to enjoy yuri between her and other characters.
Rover from Wuwa though feels much more like a self-insert. Harder for me to enjoy yuri between her and other characters.

That said my own issue with protag yuri is that it kinda reduces the characters to just revolve around the MC. But hey good yuri art is good regardless of protag yuri or not.

I think part of my mindset is due to me being a flexible shipper, and I'm glad I am. Also I generally don't self insert so I aim to play the player character as their own character. Where for me I'm happy with Yuri of the MC of games getting shipped with girls and those girls getting shipped with each other, to me both is good and more Yuri is good.

Along those lines it's why with R1999 I love Vertin with Sonetto , but I also love Sonetto with Matilda as well. With Fate I enjoy Gudako with Mash, but the art this year of Mash's love/hate ship with Lilith has been good also. Those are some examples of the MC with the character closest to them, but I also enjoy say Amber with Lumine, and then Amber with Eula, as an example of Hoyoverse. Along with pretty much any other lesbian ship with those characters and others including Stelle and Belle lol
