The most heartwarming about this story is the total lack of angst. They never had any doubts about each other's love and commitnent. Even the family was "oh well, that was obvious".

It can only work for a short story though.

You could have the exact same story elements in a long series, though. There would need to be added conflict of course, but that could easily arise out of their careers, personal conflicts with others, maybe friends or Emi's cow-orkers who don't accept them, etc. without having to make their relationship or devotion to each other any different.

What we have here would be a framework in a longer piece, tonnes of space to fit in all the little, and sometimes big, things a person, or a couple, faces in their lives.

That was lovely..

Then it becomes a slice of life. Between 8 and 97, lots of things can happen, of course. But it would need to make the characters miserable for the sake of keeping things "interesting". Happy people have no history. And I think those two are happy as they are, without an editor forcing misery on them.

I just now realized that this doujin may be one of the (if not the most) quintessential things that you link to other people here when they get blindsided by a yuri doujin's bad ending or some such and they need a pick-me-up.

That was just about the sweetest think ever! About the only thing that would have made it better is a "Two weeks later" at the end of the 25 year-old part where Mai tells Emi that not having sex isn't working and she can't concentrate to write because she is constantly thinking about sex now. (Because her sex drive was used to that level of stimulation and it is just hard to stop cold turkey when what you want is right there!)

That was the first thing that came to mind after getting to that part of the story. I actually had to stop and double check the author because it reminded me of those two so strongly.
