I've been really struggling with whether or not I should read the LN for Adashima or just give in and read the manga.

I've read like 7 chapters of the LN and the manga and didn't find them awfully different, but that was early on in the writing so I don't know!

Anyone willing to give some advice? (Not a great comparison, but I really liked the Arioto LN more than the manga)

Depends on whether you like the self reflection which Adachi and Shimamura make heavy use of.
If yes, reading the LN will be very rewarding, since a lot of this cannot be translated well into a manga without adding a lot of text.
Regardless of the above, if you're 50/50, go with the novel and then read the manga, I like the experience to map what I've once read to images, blurring the line between them.

I do sort of keep up with the official translation of the LN, and yeah, the little alien is strange by nature, but Shimamama is the weirdo for taking that alien as a sapient pet in without missing a beat, and then she does unhinged stuffs like this as naturally as breathing. No wonder Adachi's mother is outmatched at every step :))

She's good at handling that adorable creature. ^_^

Shimamura likes it and that's all the motivation Adachi needs ;) Without spoiling too much, it becomes a bit of a special tradition for them.

Both moms' radars are way too strong for their daughters to avoid.

Very very strained. There’s been bits and pieces that have popped up in the manga so far but it gets explored more heavily in the later light novel volumes

It's a bit more complicated than that, but the short answer is they don't have much of a relationship at all. Adachi was already very introverted as a child and her mom isn't good at communicating either, so they both sorta stopped even trying at some point when Adachi was in elementary school.
