Okay I need someone to explain this Valentine's tradition to me properly, because I just realized I never really thought about what they're making.

Like, yeah, gifting "self-made" chocolates, but girls aren't just melting chunks of chocolate to cast into hearts because there is an oven involved. (Which also excludes the very elaborate process of making chocolate in the first place.) So... are those chocolates actually supposed to be cookies? But cookies aren't melty...
