Not sure if the author was processing something or just wanted to write a fairly bad main protagonist of this short story but her cognition of the world is totally backwards. Azu is the fake one and the people trying to get their revenge on her were fairly forthright and honest about it.
Everyone here kinda sucks and not even in an endearing or hot way, just kinda annoying
I don't know how you define "honest" and "fake" but that's absolutely not true, if you go by what Rena defines as honesty.
Rena can trust Azu's words at face value. Azu would never lie to her, if only because she's so shameless she doesn't care enough to deceive her. In Rena's view, this is honest because she can trust Azu will say whatever she genuinely thinks to her.
Rena cannot trust her classmates' words, however, and the example given in the story is their attempt to feign concern over Rena when they really just want her as a tool to get revenge on Azu. One of them tells Rena, "Just let me know next time she pisses you off!" but she isn't saying that because she cares about Rena's feelings as much as using it as pretext to attack Azu, deserved or not.
Also Rena is so fucking attractive I swear to god.
