So I'm guessing the (obvious?) implication is that Shouko likes Tenri and not Sanjou.

isn’t this just the yuri version of “super attractive perfect girl ends up with antisocial loner whose sole redeeming quality is that they are somehow the first person to ever show basic kindness to the girl”

More than the yuri version this is quite the common plot in romance manga, “the incredible perfect beauty has never be seen as her true self” because they are so beautiful and perfect that no one has ever show them real friendship, just admiration, etc.

I'm very curious if it will go this route, or she liked the boy but finds out a cute girl is actually better. I think we've got options with how this might progress lol

I think what sets this specific 'antisocial loner' from the other cliché ones is that she has her own hobby (sumo and piano classes, can't tell if she enjoys those) rather than constantly being miserable about being an 'outcast'. We can tell she's into literature (not the common archetype of being a secret weeb).

She's also her own character. She's not like certain self insert male protags that are the "nice guy" type or w/e.

There's nuances to these things lol

I mean no one is comparing her with a male self insert protagonist, just naming cliches. Both characters clearly fit an archetype, the loner girl is a otaku and the other girl is a ojou-sama/young lady.
An archerype means that they share specific/notorious traits, not that they are exact copies with 0 differences or nuances. Subaru from Re:zero and Kirito from SAO are basically the same dude but still have a lot of differences.

I never said anyone was and yes I know. I simply stated an observation based on how I think the self insert male that's the "nice guy" is one of those types, and how there's nuances to the various types of characters that can fit under an ultimately broad umbrella.

Oh ok, I just thought it was strange to jump to male self insert protagonist as if the person was insinuating some kind of similarity between the two.

Ah naw, it's just one of the most common character types under the umbrella from what I've seen, so that's why it's what I thought of.

Looks promising and I like both leads. I saw Ono Rin's art from Class de 2 Banme and I always love their chibi faces with the dot eyes.

Does she actually have sumo and piano classes? I got the impression that she was saying random things as excuses to leave. She claimed to have cram school, English, sumo and piano lessons in one afternoon after all xD

She most definitely practices Sumo >.>

It feels weird to me that yurihime is ony 20 years old. Sure there was yuri shimai before but to think that the modern form of the magazine, a juggernaut of the yuri genre, has only existed for 20 years is still really crazy.

This gets funnier as soon as you realize that dynasty scans, the site we are on right now, is at least 22 years old.

It only took me til the pinprick eyes on page 10 to think I know who the author is, and the next two panels basically confirmed it that this is the god that is the artist for "I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class", which has probably the funniest/cutest use of visual humour I've seen. Didn't realize that for schrodingers girl,

Pleasant surprise that they do yuri for the series they are the writer for as well!

Well, the association of 'yuri' with lesbianism goes back to the 1970s, but 'yuri' only became established as a genre (or rather, as a demographic) under this name in the early 2000s. It took until 2003 for a publishing company to take a chance on running a magazine focused on lesbian-themed comics and light novels; that was Yuri Shimai. So in a way it's the concept of lesbian-themed comics and light novels that you can just buy in a book store in Japan, that is just about a quarter of a century old.

Useless Princess

I would not call Yukari antisocial and she's not particularly resentful of popular girls, unlike Kurokawa (from Useless Princess) before her makeover. Yukari seems to be just a shy and awkward girl, who entertains stray thoughts about envying popular girls as if they were fairly tale heroines but doesn't take these musings that seriously.

I think the characterization for Yukari comes in the details. In particular I found it notable that she seems to have known from the start that she's gay, and that she had an unrequited love herself in the past.

To make it extra wild even if we include yuri shimai it's only a couple years older. Yuri as we know it is such a young genre of fiction that it just feels weird to think about.

Right after she said her schedule was free, lol.

But my prediction is that she does actually take Sumo classes and this will come up in the future when a pervert is threatening Shouko and she uses her sumo skills to push him off the edge of an embankment wall.
