^ Having been following the news of Japan's marriage equality, nope. Same-sex marriage in Japan, including Tokyo, is still illegal. There is the partnership system for same-sex couples which provides limited benefits.

What @juanelric linked though is Tokyo High Court's first decision about the constitutionality of same-sex marriage being illegal in Japan. That's 2nd of the six high court rulings. The last one will be the second Tokyo High Court ruling on November.

After that is the Supreme Court ruling which will be as early as next year. Best case scenario is that the court declares the ban unconstitutional, in which the Diet must legalize same-sex marriage.

Sigh... Japan is indeed a very conservative country, isn't it...

^ it isn't, at least not in the traditional sense. you can play as a female trainer and still get all shippy scenes that exist (varies by girl), and there's at least one girl whose route becomes more intimate with a female trainer (entirely separate route, or exclusive writing...)

(and if that's still not your thing, yeah there's a ton of shippy stuff between the girls themselves that you can focus on. sometimes like in tama's case, that even overshadows the trainer stuff in quantity. i just specify the above because, as somebody who came from imas, it's crazy how lesbian friendly it is)

^ It's really not that grim. Over 70% of Japan's population supports marriage equality. Over 92% of the population is already covered by partnerships systems.

The majority of Japanese public supports marriage equality. It's just the conservative government stalling. Best case scenario is that same-sex marriage will finally be legal in Japan as early as next year.

That’s only towards homosexuals who are unrelated or are in the entertainment industry. The reaction towards an average person that is part of a sexual minority is surprisingly conservative.

I feel that might be true, though I have no concrete proof.

Also this ship art is largely inspired by the current anime, which has nothing to do with anything self insert at all. The current anime is Cinderella Gray, and it's based off a manga about Oguri Cap's legacy. So it can be watched by anyone and as an entry point into the series. I'll check out the game a little bit I think, but I'll enjoy the anime regardless and I'd recommend the anime at the very least.
