I'm so starved of sci-fi yuri that anytime it comes up it doesn't matter how trite or cliche it is I will lap it up every time.
Also there's something very romantic about this manga, more romantic than the soppiest yuri rom coms. I can't pinpoint what it is. Maybe it's been a long time since I saw such unquestioned teamwork between the leads. Usually the drama comes from one angstily second guessing the other but either they've skipped all that or it's not the main focus right now, the main focus being fighting against societal bigot baddies.
I think the unquestioned teamwork is a big part of why the romance hits so hard, but I also think it's the commitment to push forward through serious disagreement. Although Diode was absolutely right to challenge the Clan Chief to the fishing competition, it very clearly put Terra way out of her comfort zone and led to a fairly serious argument between them. But they both realize that they're in this together, and whatever differences they have are less important than the sense of fulfillment they provide one another.
This is such a fascinating world, the sexism is terrible but man what a brilliant setting.

I wonder how much drama will arise between the two when the external antagonism quiets down. It's not a story without complications, after all. Either that, or the manga will end when there is no more external bullshit to be faced and they go sailing off into the bliss of an unknown future.
I don't think I've ever before screamed in audible frustration on clicking and realizing I'd hit the last page. THIS is good Sci-Fi. It's hard to find anything recent that has this much thought put into it. Sure it's campy in ways, but the author uses science, speculates on idioms this culture could develop, and stays (mostly) in-universe for narration. Just the way it's written is already better than 90% of the stuff I find lately. And kudos to the translation team for making sure this all comes across! The SSM elements are just the icing on the cake for me.
(Okay, maybe I've been starved for decent science fiction for a while.)

Diode is really cool. I'm so excited for next chapter.
This is not relevant to what is currently happening in the manga but Terra's hair colour is quite confusing to me and I'm not sure if it was a misunderstanding on the (novel cover) artist's part or if blonde (金髪) could also include the lighter shades of brown...
Because in the novel it has been mentioned multiple time that Terra has "blonde hair" and in this sentence:
高揚のあまり、麦わら色の金髪をジェルの中に大きく浮かび上がらせて、テラが身振り手振りで語ろうとする。
It was compared to the colour of wheat straws
Can wheat be that brown?! Would anyone think of brown if they heard

I hope to god that this manga adpatation gets popular enough to warrant an official or unofficial novel translation. Sci fi and yuri is seriously such a good combo
Ugh, the misogyny is so frustrating.
I hope there's another clan thats way more chill they can escape to.
So, can anyone tell me which specific novel(s) this series is retold from? I'd like to try to hunt down a translation, or maybe even use it as an excuse to try to learn Japanese again. I can already tell this is going to update too slowly for me xwx

Yeah! I advocated picking this up with our translator because I would LOVE to be able to read the novels in English someday.

This is from the novel series of the same name. The manga serialization is currently around halfway through the first novel.

Ah, thank you so much! I looked up the author's works and there were so many that I got intimidated and didn't think to translate and search for the same name, I just assumed the books would have a different name. My bad. Thank you for your time and the upload!
Edit: Can't find any translations of the original novel. Here's to a painful wait over the next year lol

Eat shit, misogynist!

I'd keep my hopes low for a translation for now... I do hope that it gets one eventually because it's really good (I'm currently halfway through the 3rd volume of the novel) and considerably refreshing when it comes to the setting. I'm really excited for when the manga starts showing more of Terra and Diode's personalities and their moments together.
Really not much can be said without spoiling the future events but this deserves so much more attention than it got, it's got a fun setting with an interesting system, the two main characters aren't ashamed of being gay and are going to do whatever they can so they can stay together in a society that wouldn't ever accept them and value them for what they are.
They're runaways for a reason and this will make more sense in the next few chapters to come.
It's leaning a little too hard into sexist stereotypes (that is, stereotypes of sexism) and trivial criticism of the main characters for my suspension of disbelief. Every single time someone else seems reasonable, they have to say something that reverses or undercuts it. The writing feels like it has all the grace, nuance, wisdom, and polish of an angry middle-schooler's rant about how mean and unfair the world is.
I'll keep reading because the main characters are decent enough, the setting is weird and cool, and the artist likes putting them in attractive outfits all the time, but damn is the allegorical technique on display thus far just JV as fuck.
i hate thous type of stories, i just checked the comments to see if it’s worth reading, i will just jump from first chapter to the last and read from there, cuz i’m not wasting time on an story that tries to hard to send a message, let’s see how much the author is gonna hand-fist the sexism in this story.
I can now safely say that this is false. There wasn't a single event that made me think "this is too absurd". The bioessentialism that is rampant in our society plagues theirs just as much and we got the first strong taste of it through Xeon. The insistence that social roles and behaviour are "natural" despite them being violently enforced with limitations based on nothing other than culture, those roles being treated as immutable and those who diverge from it being punished harshly with women being seen as less and only useful to marry, impregnate and keep the cycle going is realistic enough.
And they DO treat marriage like it's the ultimate goal in life and all it does is keep the characters chained down to something futile (The Bow Awow being seen as one of the most important events to happen in their society), they're girls who can't have kids so they're "wasting" resources that someone else could be using by playing around with the tool that was made for a Real Couple, because of course a gay relationship couldn't possibly be genuine and they have nothing worthy to provide if not kids.
Their deck dresses are like that to please their husbands. The sexual harassment Terra's gone through coming from both men and women... Terra's having to learn from 0 the things that she's fine and comfortable with and accepting that she doesn't need to get married... It's not absurd. She was seen as an attractive fertile body and nothing more to most people she interacted with until meeting Diode — not to mention the treatment she gets for having too much of an imagination and being known as "Tell-Tale Terra" against her will.
The misogyny and how the characters try to survive around it is an essential part of this work. It's not being "hand-fisted" into it when the very system of their society is one based entirely on sexism and that's what the characters are running away from. You can't hand-fist what the author wants to be one of the main themes of the work, lol.
The main conflict is that they're not allowed to be together because of how their society works so if you remove it... you're getting rid of the entire story. If what brought them together was the fact that they aren't satisfied with the cage they live in, if you get rid of the cage, what conflict is left?
MASSIVE SPOILERS FROM THE NOVEL
It's hidden away that the two most relevant individuals who first made it possible for them to live in the FBB 300 years ago were a lesbian couple in a very high position in their own fleet who were already exiled themselves for having an ability that was undesirable in the rest of the Galactive Interactive (I may be misremembering this term), that ability being DECOMPRESSING and it's considered a crime to do so anywhere else. Those things are all social and not biological and that they must enforce it if they want it to be seen as the default way of men and women being.
SPOILERS FROM DIODE'S ORIGINATING CLAN
It also only gets worse, hers is especially sexist and limits what women can learn in their education programs with her using her stay at Terra's clan as an opportunity to pry into things she wasn't allowed to before. IIRC women are compulsorily made to train as Decompas at some point in their lives and Diode is REALLY bad at decompressing.
My memory is bad so those things probably aren't accurate but it's enough to get the general idea of what is happening in their setting.
Everyone is allowed to dislike things but I find it a bit rude to be diminishing those works that focus on themes like this when you haven't even read it yet nor plan to and immediately assume bad things about it.
This remains accurate throughout the work. It's one of the things I love the most about them and an example I can give without spoiling anything much are those two scenes from Volume 3, one where Diode is deep into thought about their future:
and the other where Diode brings up about wanting to be alone sometimes, Terra mistaking it with her possibly being too horny and that being a bother(lol) for Diode and then understanding that sometimes people need to be by themselves and mentioning that she "didn't know because she had no past experience with that(dating)".
When making a choice they always think of each other and Diode makes a point of being understanding with Terra, incentivizes her to say what's on her mind and to tell her if she's uncomfortable with whatever they're doing at the time and that she will stop if told to. This is Terra's first healthy relationship. They're quite horny if this matters to anyone.
Diode is also a bit of a tsuntsun with quite the vocabulary and gets weirdly clingy at times so I'm really looking forward to when she starts showing more of that side while Terra is like "Hehehe... My aprtner is so atrauctive asfdodiujfszxcbv"
VOLUME 2 NOVEL SPOILERS
She gets mad when エダ calls Terra "Terra-chan", エダ (who is also quite into teasing) then switches to "Terra-kun" and this is how she reacts
And this Terra said near the end of the Volume 1 remains legendary to me:
「これでしょう! おっぱいでしょう! こういうの大好きなんでしょう!」
Two cute illustrations from the comic-growl upload of it if anyone else hasn't seen them yet: 1 2

And for those who care about the fish there are some cool ones which we'll be seeing later... :)and cool clouds and storms but a good part of the fun atmospheric phenomena is near the end and also in the second volume of the novel so it will be quite a while until then
If I were to complain about something it's that there wasn't enough fish but the cool fishing scenes make up for it
I'd keep my hopes low for a translation for now... I do hope that it gets one eventually because it's really good.
I'm honestly tempted to buy and scan the books myself just to machine translate them (not to post, just for myself) but I know how involved that would be and how messy it would be to clean up the translation without social context. But I genuinely struggle to keep interest in a story when there's a long period between updates. At least a lot seems to happen each release. Really wish I'd discovered this story like a year from now when I could at least get a good first arc out of it then abandon the manga until another year later.

Yeah I think that due to the complexity of it using machine translation wouldn't be a good idea... If I had the brainpower to translate I would gladly do so but sadly I do not. It's also got a bunch of physics-related terms in the text and I could see the more descriptive scenes getting confusing. Best choice for now might be to set it aside and wait unless you want to support the author and buy them anyway.
The first novel is also quite dense in how its chapters are divided so I'm glad it's now something in the style of "chapters divided by multiple parts" instead of huge sections with no clear spot you can stop on.
This is the kind of word-building sci-fi that I love. Also, height gap baby!
Sometimes misogyny in a society in a story can be way over the top, but I usually buy it in a colonization Sci-Fi setting like this.
When you have a limited number of ships and a limited number of resources, it does make sense that many social norms would be discarded (often too many). I imagine they have very strict regulations on population control, for example.
I honestly think there's at least a little bit of pilot bias in the society that's also stacking with the misogyny to make things as twisted as they are. Even Diode sometimes does her own thing without looking for advice from Terra. And yes, you can't have the pilot playing 50 questions while flying, but multiple times so far, Terra's insight has proven to be key when they eventually do start communicating.
My apologies for another long post, within the same page even, but I really want to talk about this somewhere. It is also a bit spoilery regarding their personalities, so please be careful!
I love the thing Terra and Diode have going between them.
It's not like there isn't any conflict, a small as it is, between the two of them. Terra is a somewhat anxious girl that gets a little too into (for others, it's painful when she starts rambling so happily about something and everyone looks at her like "wat"...) the things she's interested in, and Diode the sort that often is too embarrassed to be honest about her own feelings. She's more serious in nature compared to Terra, who often has trouble standing her ground and is the kind of individual who will say "thank you" to someone who kept her caged after they free her, but Diode is there to make sure that she's not so amicable towards those that don't deserve it when Terra doesn't really catch the negative implications behind what is being said or happening towards them both, while still respecting Terra's good-natured personality and allowing her to indulge in acts she herself usually wouldn't, for the sake of her partner.
This doesn't mean that Terra is dumb or completely unaware of the intentions some of the characters have, she is quite aware actually and sometimes will notice exactly what is happening before Diode herself does, the thing is how she still treats many that don't deserve it... a little too well for Diode's taste and that's what makes her angry — because really, why would she enjoy seeing her partner get unfairly humiliated and stepped on by those who are unworthy of her? She can't keep quiet about it and that side of hers has already been shown in chapter 8.
Without spoiling anything, this is a good example of what I mean:
A little bit of a conflict happens and Diode knows that what Terra said is a lie, but because she is aware of her nature and how she wouldn't be able to put up an act to trick her, and also because Terra is a little bit of what some may call an "airhead"... she doesn't press further so it doesn't escalate into an actual conflict and leaves her be.
Diode too has fears and one of them is that of being abandoned and left completely alone. Again, she has trouble being open about certain feelings and that's where Terra can help her, by giving her an opening to be honest with her and herself:
手首をもって吊るし上げた、眼前の少女に深緑の瞳を据えて、テラは言い聞かせる。
「大丈夫です」
「はいっ?」
「大丈夫です、ダイさん。何も謝ることも、怖がることもないです。──今でも怖いんでしょう? 一人になってしまうことが」
「そ……」
ダイオードが首をすくめる。テラはゆっくりとうなずく。
This tension though doesn't come from them demanding the impossible from the other but rather their own worries and needing a bit of a push to address them more openly like they usually do with other things that aren't ailing them as much on an individual level. They're in this together and they know it.
Diode can be cold, harsh and mean sometimes, even towards Terra, who will shrink when Diode looks at her with cold eyes, that often happens when they're discussing their plans and Diode is set on on doing what she desires and not being chained down or when Terra says something absurd, only to soften up later on whenever they're having their moments. This contrasts nicely with how clingy she gets when it comes to Terra, and a bit prickly when it comes to strangers — I'd say because she doesn't really seem to enjoy the amount of socialization Terra doesn't have much problem with — or even towards Terra herself as I've mentioned in my other the part where she says that she does want to be by herself sometimes and Terra has compared her many times before to the animal known as ノラネコ... stray cat.... she's seen in historical records because of how easily she slips away and comes back whenever she's in the mood for it.
So really they're quite compatible with each other and despite everything know what to prioritize the most, their goal is to stay together and they are going to work towards it together and find something that works for both of them when they have wants and needs they can not sacrifice. Terra can be quite sensitive and Diode quite dry at times (Well she is a bit of a tsuntsun), but they get along well and care deeply for the other.
Their height gap and difference in body structure is really hot BY THE WAY. Skelly short girl x 'Mature' tall girl. Diode's height is either 148cm or 149cm, I forgot but I'll check it later when I reread the novels. Diode despite loving boobs is very respectful about it so I appreciate that. She is also insecure about her own body and unsure if Terra really likes it but Terra is such a horny beast it's almost nonsense for her to be questioning if Terra is actually into her!!! She looked at Diode and her first thought was "Woah. What a pretty girl..." She immediately gayed out!!! I don't think that it ever specified Terra's height, only that she's tall.
Their entire thing very healthy with Diode being really patient with Terra and willing to guide her and stop if she's too scared and, despite her usual embarrassment, talking explicitly about relationship stuff since despite her age she does have a bit more experience and knowledge when it comes to that. She may find Terra's imagination a bit too much sometimes too but ultimately respects it and recognizes its value instead of dismissing her as "Tell-Tale Terra" and really it's just nice.
Sadly the thing I want to talk the most about along some comments and complaints that goes more in depth about marriage and what comes after, sexism and such within this work and this one huge thing regarding the two of them, the implications that come from it and the possibilities when it comes to how it works and the things that the author can write about (if he plans to write more) are a massive spoiler from Volume 3 and it will take years for the manga to reach that point, assuming it doesn't get cancelled before then.
So for those that can read it... I really recommend giving it a try, if I don't end up having a moment and translating it myself despite never done so before... I hope that more people get interested in it so a proper group translates at least some of it.

Agree with this, it sucks for the gays that live in there, but also opens the door to questioning the importance of marriage and if it really is necessary for a couple to be married, the novel does explore Terra's thoughts on marriage and what is it that she really wants later on
I really want to know what all of you think about it! So I'm looking forward for more chapters of the manga so that everyone can discuss more about it and its fun setting of fish in a gas giant called Fat Beach Ball ^__^
That's something that I can't talk about even superficially because for now in the manga it is a complete mystery how Besshu work, but we'll get to see cool creatures and I'm excited for the artist's take on the design of a certain one!
Or really everything else that happens in the novel... It's so good!
So good!!
Also Terra is blonde
Sorry for another post right after my own, I like Twinstar Cyclone Runaway.
So now that I'm reading the novel again I wanted to bring up how the events after their first time fishing together, chapter 5, where they stop to talk after being done with fishing got a bit... reduced, I guess? In the manga.
After they finish fishing Diode gets emotional and insecure about whether or not her piloting was good enough, Terra gets unsure about what to say but makes it clear that the fishing went better than all her previous attempts and then she thinks to herself: "Ah, when I look at her like this, it becomes clear that she is putting up a front" and gets all Fufu >w< about it since Diode is younger than her.
However when they dock their pillar boat, Bonus is a bit more sarcastic(?) in the novel and touches a sore spot by acting how it's such a surprise for that haul to be coming from Terra when she is known for her previous failed marriage and fishing attempts. That bothers Diode considerably and after they're done talking with Bonus, she gets upset in Terra's behalf over allowing that to happen and also over not being prepared for the "What's your actual name" trouble and making Terra feel like discarding their catch again for her sake.
And this is after Terra mentions how they always celebrate after a catch (with bad catches having "consolation celebrations")
The scene that happens after they're done showering got reduced quite a bit, I understand that it's probably hard to show those things through a manga medium and there's a limited amount of pages, but the text does give a lot more attention to how it felt like Diode was running away from Terra as it's pointed out how her hair was wetter compared to Terra's, because she did hurry in the shower, and how that was one of the situations where Terra's height is her "strength" by allowing her to find Diode in a crowd.
So yeah, rather than just sitting down and getting straight to the point, first Terra consoles a Diode that's a bit overwhelmed and crying because of the change in environment, messing up with her name, feeling insecure about her piloting and (what she assumes) getting stuck with a girl that makes weird nets lol... They get a little awkward with the sudden closing distance, and then they get to the point, which is that Diode is a ship-jumper and being pursued. I'm just a little sad that we didn't get to see that drawn and it's another of those moments that shows the difference between the two when it comes to how they approach the other. Terra being more willing to approach and be affectionate (And they only knew each other for 3 days then) and Diode like a stray cat but still very affectionate in her own way.
I wonder how Tanaka Ahiru plans on showing those aspects of them and how much of a say Ogawa Issui has on the manga's script itself because I don't think that their core as characters changed much from the first volume of the novel to the third. I think I commented enough about their personalities on my previous post for this to make sense, at least I hope it makes sense.

It's quite nice seeing Terra make the effort to pull Diode closer. Die-san is going to have to get a UHaul-like UHaul at this rate.
In case you're wondering why the previous chapter summary is actually the summary of this chapter, you'll have to take it up with the Bushiroad editorial staff. I have no idea why they did that.

Lol, thanks! I was wondering.

True.
The panel where Terra's all angry and the one where she throws herself on Diode are one of my favourites so far!
