NOT THE DOG AHEGAO

I fully agree, forcing a dog to make double peace signs with its paws is just inhumane.

Toda being under-aged was foreshadowed back in chapter one. When Tanaka first spoke with Toda on the phone she noted that Toda "sounded young".And later when Tanaka gives her a beer, it's pretty obvious from her reaction that Toda had never drank alcohol before.

On a different topic: going by this chapter, it seems like we might start to learn a bit about Tanaka's past as well as Toda's.

The previous scene that came back to mind for me was Seiko nervously buying the magazine after her first story got published. It wasn't just the embarrassment of being seen doing that, it was also wondering if the fake ID would pass the test.

You know, I was really not sure what to make of this twist about her age, but I think they handled it pretty well overall.

Leave it to the sales people to properly promote a book after a scandal.
That checks out.
I want to see the meeting of Seiko's mum and Tanaka san.
The Touda family is getting one more daughter

Totally. I know this isn't marked as yuri, but the upcoming visit to the family still gives me a 'meeting the in-laws' kind of vibe.

Chapter 16 is Fantastic! Good to see all around views/perspectives of her publishing adult content while under-aged.

I had expected to see both MC’s fired over this… the mangaka fired for lieing her age and the editor to make her an example to the rest of the staff. Yet this plot twist isn’t over, in my opinion.

"Every kid grows up sneaking peeks at porn long before turning 18, yet here we are, losing our shit because one of them had the guts to draw some herself!"

I swear, that is the most profound commentary of the state of modern society I have read in a long while.

Oh,the internet has made that whole affair so much more uncontrollable, the government may as well give and have the companies print whatever they want with the warnings in place and the guardians deal it on their own,as they should.

There’s another mangaka who put a spotlight on the lack of emotional help in Japan… I forgot her name but I own a copy of every manga she published.

I'd like to know who she is, if you're ever able to recall her name.

Me too please.

Was it Kabi Nagata?

That was going to be my guess as well. I (finally) picked up My Alcoholic Escape from Reality today and it is a rough rough ride pretty much from the table of contents onwards:

The various medical treatments and results depicted in this book are limited by the author's experience, perception, and decisions. Please do not self-diagnose or self-medicate. If you need help, speak to a medical professional.

How was the book? I remember reading her first work and being an escapist, I felt utterly depressed. It was too real, personal and dark.. it was an eye opener but frankly it's not something I want to revisit anytime soon, especially during this pandemic. I wish to pick it up in the future cos I really hope she'll be alright.

Well, the book exists, so she avoided the worst possible outcome. It's tricky talking about her work, because it feels like each successive work is a little more grounded (her relationship with her parents has improved a lot, or at least she just sees and portrays them very differently now) but also makes me worry about what might happen to her next. Also, I found this book a lot less despairing and a lot funnier than My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, in part because the situation is just so messed up and absurd, and because of all the little details she includes, like the incredibly unwieldy 4-liter bottle of shochu she got in the depths of her bender phase. It's funny and it hurts to watch at the same time.

I think the best news in this one is that a lot of the problems that led to her being such a heavy drinker were relatively easily fixed by changing her ADHD meds, so barring any long-term consequences of her pancreatitis, she's probably gonna be OK? I'm really rooting for her to get her shit together. I also really want to see something from her that's not so directly autobiographical, just to see what it's like. She tweets excerpts from a work in progress that looks pretty different from her previous stuff, so I'm hopeful that's what she's doing…

It's kind of ridiculous, the lengths to which the whole situation is about keeping up appearances.

Went to a friend's house when I was 12 (pre-internet), and he had a stash of porn magazines that his dad, the local sheriff, had supplied him with. Only rule was that he couldn't let his mom or sister know about them. His best friend's parents ran a video store with an adult section, and they were allowed to borrow anything they wanted. At the time, what bothered me most was the objectification; looking back on it, I also see how the boys were treated so differently in this regard from the girls.

I'm a little surprised that this aspect hasn't appeared in the story yet: does the artist being an underage girl make it a touchier situation than if the artist were a boy? Like, an attitude of "That's just what boys do," vs, "The girl must be protected at all costs." (Not from the publisher, mind, but from prudish, head-in-the-sand politicos.)

Nagata Kabi: She authored “The Private Report on My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness”

Her works are licensed and selling well in the states.

Maybe she’ll get to meet up with the other friend and they can talk about manga.

I hope her mom isn’t too antagonistic

Her latest book qualifies for “Depressing as Fuck” tag.

I’d prefer the mom being an asshole, for there’s got to be a motivator to escape her hometown. If the MC had a supportive social network in town, she would have stayed and grow up normally. This manga depicts a teenage (yet gifted) runaway trying to make a living on her own. I’m looking forward to what the mangaka churns out.

I wish I had a Tanaka in my life to give me such levelheaded advice and motivation. She immediately turned down the first competition between Toda and Norush which she rightly considered unbalanced due to Toda's noobness in the industry but also supported Toda's decision to go through with it (using the power of yuri no less). And she convinces Toda that she's got no reason to be embarrassed pursuing and achieving her eromanga dreams in Tokyo. Literally the perfect editor/housemate/wife/mom material. She's flawless, its a little scary.

It's kind of refreshing how all the adults in this manga willingly acknowledge that the rules about porn and sexy stuff (especially the age limits) are STUPID.

And at the same time they assert that we gotta uphold them, because that's society for you. No matter how hypocritical or contradictory it seems, you gotta go through the motions.

The author deserves praise for this extremely realistic portrayal of the Japanese way of thinking. Not positive, not negative, just realistic. And sometimes a tiny little bit cute, like that part where Tanaka put all the eromanga magazines in a box and told Seiko she could only open it in a month. That silliness was adorable. <3

I think most people working in a particular industry have a front-row seat for all of its silly idiosyncrasies, so it's not surprising for porn industry professionals to recognize the obsolescence of its institutions. On the other hand, all institutions, no matter how obsolete, have perceived and real value, which blend into each other: the perceived value comes from the fact that, as humans (especially as we get older), we instinctively defer to long-lasting institutions, assuming on faith that if they've survived this long, they must be doing something good. While this assumption can and should be challenged, the other big part of the real value of institutions is their facilitation of low-friction interactions in social environments too complex for any single person to penetrate. In other words, challenging an established institution (like the age restriction on porn) may have cascading side effects that will negatively impact many more people beside yourself. For a society like Japan, which had learn to coexist in a very limited physical space for a long time, the risk that rocking the boat this way has historically posed to its survival just consistently seems to be judged as not worth it.
