Writing with straightness in mind? I mean, it's a josei romance manga. That's sort of like lambasting Akira Toriyama for having all those fight scenes in Dragonball when he has a perfectly good slice of life mood going on every few episodes. I love queer and yuri works too, but I wouldn't expect them to show up in other genres. Josei romance stories are all about melodramatic, anxiety-inducing dynamics, like Hachi basically being a prisoner in her home. However! There's some yuri that grew out of that genre, and if Nana but yuri is your jam... check these out:

Packed full of awful, sad, emotional times. Hopefully better than the ending of Nana which, like, damn. Nana is clinically, catatonically depressed after Rin dies, and then the manga is dropped. Yikes. I don't think the last chapters ever made it to a tankobon.
