Other people around here are a lot more expert than I am on this topic, but my impression is that there's no incentive to do anime of an already completed manga series, and yuri just wasn't much on the anime radar at the time that such a series would have been possible.

I believe the Marimite and Strawberry Panic franchises benefited from starting as light novels and proving they had legs by branching into manga and other media before getting an anime.

That's my sketchy, half-informed take, anyway.

Ahh, Girlfriends... Both one of my first yuri mangas and the first physical copy I bought once it was brought over to Canada. I can definitely see the improvement Morinaga has made comparing this to Girlfriends. Such a nostalgia trip!

This bring back memories. GF was my first yuri and my awakening to yuri (in more ways than one). At first I thought that this was about friendship... Oh how wrong I was and I'm glad I was wrong. GF might not have been the best yuri story there is but -- without a doubt -- It's my favorite. AkkoMari will always have a special place in my heart.

On another note, the great Morinaga-sensei's art has improved yet again! I hope I can read more of her works.

1. Where can we buy it?

2. I also wish it had been during/after their college years. The end was a bit unfulfilling as-is - we never got to see Akko at all, never got to see them come out to friends or family, never got to see the life they were working toward together. If this one-shot does well maybe she'll pick up those threads too?!

I would've preferred something in the future too but I don't think this is a bad choice either though. The manga did gloss over basically all of their third year so having that fleshed out a bit more is nice. I definitely think going with something further along in the future would've been a better choice though.

please come back, I was feeling nostalgic and going through my completed series list and came across girl friends again and I realized how much I miss this series. it was one of the very first Yuri manga I read and it helped cement my love for the genre. I would love nothing more than to see any new content about these two. even fan made stuff will be wonderful.
