the intention of a lot of these works is to look beyond a character's "assigned sex" in the first place, i.e. if someone believes "trans" is too "concrete" a label this is also true for "cis gnc" being too "concrete" a label. Ambiguous gender makes ambiguous sex/gender itself and captures all of these experiences. It can also operate alongside Cross-dressing and Transgender tags rather than being replacements for them.
Yes, I completely agree. Much like yuri itself often deliberately plays around in the vague space both between and beyond "friendship" and "romance," works such as these are often consciously playing around with gender/sex to make a point about how vague the boundaries between "male" and "female" really are. See also for example Prunus Girl, another manga that probably deserves the Ambiguous gender tag come to think of it.
A lot of the strife being caused is from the word choice people decide to use. I see a lot of "this is X" instead of "this feels like X to me." I also see a lot of responses to people who say how they feel that are completely unnecessary and trying to undermine their interpretation. Neither is productive and both lead to pointless arguments.
Well, again, that's not too dissimilar from the fights people have gotten into over Yuri vs Subtext. Certainly I got into some passionate arguments about green yuri back in the day lol. Now I do think the trans interpretation debates tend to be more intense than the yuri vs subtext debates, and I don't think establishing a usage for the Ambiguous gender tag will totally fix that, but I do think it would help by framing the terms of the debate: that gender identity is ambiguous in the work in question, so it's a matter of discussing competing interpretations.
