The opposite can be seen in Hakuouki, which I liked, but the protagonist was so bland... omg, I can't hate her because she was nice but she was such a plain character and it was obviously deliberate.
I hope I have more choice in the game but it seems that unless she gets with the demon she will just be as plain as ever I really liked Hijikata though... sigh~ Btw, a Hakuouki type yuri would be great without the harem part maybe better though, a wealthy girl in feudal Japan fall in love with a kunoichi that comes to steal her father's documents blah blah blah blah, something like that :P

Just look at Seikon No Qwaser, it's very similar to Valkyrie Drive, but with a male protegonist and mostly straight characters and got a 2nd season, while VD won't.

I think that's because Seikon no Qwaser is an ongoing manga and Valkyrie Drive is a multi media franchise tho.
On equal footing, if VD had been a manga, i dont even know if it would have gotten an anime adaptation at all

At the end of the day, it's about money. And money is padering to a certain audience. Yuri audience is relatively small compared to het or yaoi, so I guess maybe this is why they don't even bother to make a lot of decent yuris.

I think that when I was 12-13 I didn't really get "moe" because it was around girls that were my age, but now that I'm older, I do kinda get that they're cute and precious and it's just so sweet :3 (like in Hitoribocchi)

I've been following yuri for 10 years already, and I can't recall a better and more exciting time than the time we're in right now lol. It's true that it's still not enough compared to het, but it keeps getting better and better. FF, WDTFS, Bloom Into You, Their Story, Lily Love, Always Human, Vengeance, etc. are updated either weekly or quite frequently. And look at the diversity of the titles I just listed. Wow.. *blissed*

But if Faylicia was just talking about Japanese yuri manga, then I kinda agree. It's getting repetitive (esp. high school settings x_x), and the long wait between updates is quite disheartening. The series I've been waiting right now are Tonari no Robot, Hana & Hina, Collectors, Fragments of Love, Dear My Teacher, My Ignorance of a world yet unknown, Rock it girl.... Omg.. it's been so long

We dont know that for sure, just today Famitsu ran a piece about the event with the seiyus last month that ended saying to keep an eye on the series webpage for future news while Takaki tweeted about working hard to make VD and Uppers a lobg running series like Senran Kagura.

yeah I miss the japanese manga I guess, I mean the webcomics are great too buuut...
I don't mind some moe like in New Game buuut... a lot of the times it gets kind of tiring... and I think I enjoyed it more before when I was around their age but now it's just like 14 year old girls being too cute. I don't really wanna see that >.> But maybe that's why I find New Game a bit more relatable, I guess when I'm 25 or sth I won't anymore.
Maybe it also has to do with the fact that I don't even like cute girls so if they're all cute I don't even care so much >.>

I found this critic about VDM to be very relevant to this discussion

So I just binged through this series today. Had been avoiding it for a long time since I have no interest in the in-your-face fanservices, but to my pleasant surprise, VD actually has some substance in it.

There are real lesbians, not just straight-girls-making-out-for-plot-reason. Mirei's attraction for Mamori was handled so well. So much so that I couldn't remember the last time I've seen a canon yuri romance being developed with such grace. It didn't feel rushed, Mirei's sympathy for Mamori just gradually changed into adoration and then full on romantic in a natural way. This is IMO thanked to 1) the excellent pacing of the show and 2) the tasteful execution of jealousy + protectiveness moments.

The OP and ED music actually sound good. I didn't skip a single OP for all 12 episodes, something I hadn't done in years.

The final battle was awesome. The weapons and Mirei's Valkyrie form all have great designs.

Most the characters, including the villains, are likable. While they're not the most multidimensional characters out there, they do exhibit some degrees of well-roundedness instead of boring archetypes.

My only griefs with this show is 1) the fact it's a softcore porn (The oversized breasts make some of the girls look less pretty than they actually are. The bare tits/butts/crotches, tentacle scene, undignified crude poses, etc. make the show look cheap and hard to respect) and 2) some of the plot points are lazy asspull (pretending to be a guy because "it will guarantee you to be a leader among girls", really??? Going batshit insane because you're being used as a lab rat, sure, but why not getting angry when they first turned you into a living weapon as well?)

Tl;dr: expecting dumb porn, got a decent action show with real romance instead - as long as you can tune out the porn parts.

Yes. This. I agree.
I've mentioned before but male non-yuri fan viewers that were disappointed it was the typical het borderline porn really pissed me off. But the fact that they are disappointed with it, is actually a good enough thing, if you think about it, because it wasn't catered to them. Sure it's still borderline porn and fanservey af, but 100% yuri. Mirei is a complete badass, and how she cares for Mamori is what I found most endearing, paired up with how amazingly badass she is and I was hooked.
And you know another thing that's kinda cool? There isn't the "I'm a guy I'll protect you because you are a girl" bullshit. Sure some tend to be the ones saved, but they are saved by other girls and that's rad.
What I got from a few eps of Seikon no Qwaser were the girls being not only fanservice but also weak af, except like, 1.
Also another total plus is all the fanart and doujins, most of them are like super sweet
The pairings in the anime weren't just fullblown girl on girl fanservice, they were shown to care and support each other and that is bae

There is one thing that you need to note, too. Sure, there are a lot of Love Live doujins, Touhou doujins, moe-slice-of-lifes-where-nothing-happen mangas here, but that's mostly because a lot of people know what to expect from them and know that they'll probably enjoy them, so they're put first when it comes to translating. (with works from popular authors like Takemiya Jin, of course)
I'm pretty certain there are a LOT of original yuri mangas out there that are just untranslated or simply not scanned at all. (mostly because most scanlation groups already have a lot on their hands with the projects they're doing now, so they can't translate absolutely everything)
Just need to look around on pixiv or other websites for untranslated stuff. I don't guarantee that you'll find something you like, though.

haha, thank you, I think so too, I just don't know japanese so even if I found them it'd be a bit pointless! I tried looking for some english comics and some were really nice but most of them were not to my taste... also finding them can be a bit hard as in most cases lists are made of comics that feature women who like women but that are not necessarily about romance and tbh I couldn't care less about those. And some other times I don't really like the specific characters' looks. In manga they are pretty standard so that rarely happens but sometimes western comics have styles I just don't really like or errr... I don't like how a particular character looks. I like Go get a Roomie for example but even in that there's not much romance, it just started getting a bit more suggestive

You'd be having a grand time with yuri right now if you can read Japanese and have the funds to import things from Japan. I'm echoing dpf on this and I feel like you might be part of the younger generation that did not endure the dark ages of "shoujo ai". Also try playing kindred spirits on the roof. It's really sweet and very well done for a game that came out about five years ago.

Another vote for playing Kindred Spirits here. I'd also give Black Closet a whirl. The 'Hella Yuri' list on Steam is a fun place to scour for similar games if that appeals. The blossoming of Western VNs has been a recent-ish lifeline for me.
