I really hope Risa isn't dead. It would be such a waste of her character

I like the theory that Eko is some kind of carrier for the virus.

This honestly makes everything thus far make complete sense. She's survived so far without any ill effects, an entire group of people goes insane and kills each other soon after meeting her, and now Miya is turning after being in an enclosed space with her. It's quite possible she is patient zero and doesn't even know it.

Y'all are obviously too young to know the symptoms of a stroke. On page 18, Miya suddenly has an intense headache, and from that point onward, the left side of her face begins to droop: just look at the different sizes of her eyes here, here, and here. Girl has had a very stressful day, had a stroke, and will probably die without immediate help.

You're never to young to marvel at the manifold ways the human body can just decide to simply not.

But now I feel kind of guilty because I've been thinking that the art has been getting worse when I noticed the uneven face at first.

I said it as a joke but I was genuinely hoping Miya would kill Eko and we'd get a surprise "protagonist" swap.

this is getting suspicious now. this is the second person that has dropped dead in front of Eko... is she spreading the virus?

also makes a lot of sense now why she is so possessive of Risa if everyone else around her keeps dropping dead.

You have a way with words, good sir.

Yeah, I thought it was an artist slip-up at first, too, but it was way too consistent to not be deliberate. When Miya collapsed, I also went back to see when the "slip-up" began, and landed at the scene where she gets a headache out of the blue, which sealed the deal for me.

While that is definitely possible, I think that Eko is at least not the only factor in this case. Recall that Miya's mother was also feeling sick when Miya whacked her over the head. It wasn't clear at the time, but now I suspect that she was having a stroke, but unlike Miya, recognized it and tried to get the meds (note the glass of water and the scattered pills). We know that strokes have at least a significant genetic component, so people with a family history of strokes are more likely to have them. The game was rigged against Miya from the start.

Huh.

Well shit, that's some real good insight.

That said, awfully young for a stroke. But maybe Eko's death aura accelerated it?

dying over a stroke is so lame in a zombie apocalypse lol and it doesn't explain why Eko's mom ended up dying the moment she was in contact with her. If she isn't spreading the virus there is definitely some sort of supernatural element going on here. Eko seems to be the cause of these sudden deaths without her directly doing anything.

Eko can't be attributed to this one since her mom got killed by the dude she was with (presumably) before Eko ever got to see her post-apocalypse, although the scene with the college kids in the closed-room mall is still very suspicious in many ways.

That aside, I can't say this is what I expected, lol.

I hope Miya got through to Eko. I need this threesome of girlies.

So it seems like, as in many settings, the zombie virus has both airborne and fluid transmission vectors. Miya and her mother managed to hole up and hide for the most part but it would seem that the mother got infected at some point (probably while scavenging) and Miya got it as she made her way out of the house or maybe shortly before. Eko on the other hand had her struggle with (at least the airborne variant of) the virus and is maybe immune, maybe a carrier in her own right. Only real question here is if Risa seriously questions why Eko was here with Miya.

I could totally see some remnant of governmental authority finding the immune(?) Eko and sentient zombie Risa and try to get them for study while Eko responds to the less abducty overtures with 'Ha. You think I care about saving humanity?'

Like raw milk.

This is a story about a zombie apocalypse. Like kickap00 correctly pointed out, it would have been extremely lame for that to be the way she died.

Okay, yeah, those zombies are scary. I don't recall any other setting with such rapid zombification. (Perhaps Dead Space's Necromorphs, but arguably that's external necromancy, not infection.) Just imagine somebody in your survivor group shows symptoms: you have to restrain them now, they'll turn any moment.

I'm not sure if Eko's actually an asymptomatic carrier or if Miya got infected by her mother, but the latter would be even worse given how long she felt okay just to then turn from one minute to the other.

joined Jul 19, 2024

I actually think the cinema group getting infected is because of Risa not Eiko. We know she is infected and she is shown cooking for the group which provides a lot of opportunity for her to accidentaly infect everyone. The group turns almost immidiately after eating the soup she makes so it seems to be the most proximate cause

28 days later had pretty quick turnaround. Seem to recall one guy getting a drop of bad blood in his eye and going from 'I'm probably okay' to 'oh shit, I'm turning' to growling and nearly mindless in about a minute.

The turning in Train to Busan was also fairly rapid.

Yeah, was about to say that, too. In defense of prior speculation, zombification having some of the same symptoms as a stroke is a novel idea unique to this manga AFAIK. :-)

You know there are all type of zombie infection lore, like how everyone is infected but then turns in zombie when they die (assuming their head and body not too damage).

Or there are types where the infection rate differs initial in the airborne virus type and people began to get infect later on due to increase infection rate and those people not having a strong enough resistance/good enough body to resist the infection.
Kind of like School live, some of the character later on in the series we see get infected despite not being bitten

You got to account for how everyone has different bodies and different immunity strengths...Like that Train to Busan guy dumb@ss that killed a lot of people due to his selfish then taking a while in turning into a zombie due to probably having a higher resistance to the virus. Some people can turn in a couple minutes, some turn in a couple hours....while some people can turn after 24 hours. Though if you don't turn after a week then your probably immune XD

Also...RIP MIYA!!!! RIP THE 3SOME POLY RELATIONSHIP ROUTE!!! Only MC and Risa single pairing route is the OTP!!!!

MC felt bad about Miya dying and had trouble trying to kill zombie Miya, though I would be surprised if this was actually her master plan to make Risa kill Miya herself (I don't understand the whole golf ball bag thing...Did MC just wimp out and didn't want to go golfing on Miya's head leading to Risa being the one to do it or did she plan for it which seems very very unlikely lol.)

Though it would be funny if Risa is the person infecting everyone slowly and subtly like one comment said and MC is actually just immune to the virus (Reason why she is the only person able to stay with Risa). MC can spread the infection as well due to being close to Risa perhaps but she herself cannot be infected?

Well I'm sure that won't have any effect on the psyche of the zombie girl that's been hanging on so far.

Page 23... is that just a cheeky way to get around drawing the corpse again, or are we dealing with mind screwery?
