Just got into yuri manga recently and I'm looking for recommendations. The one that got me hooked was Sal Jiang's one-shot All There Is To It, and from there I branched out into her other stuff, and then looked to last year's poll result to find works from other authors. I like grounded stuff more than supernatural/sci-fi/fantasy works, and prefer stories about adults to high-school stuff, but I've enjoyed some school life manga. Some of my favorite themes are angst about homophobia and difficulty accepting your sexuality, but I don't want anything too depressing/tragic.
My favorite series so far has been Run Away with Me, Girl, but I've also read and enjoyed (in approximate order) Ayaka is in love with Hiroko, Moon On A Rainy Night, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy at All, and Bloom Into You.
On the other hand, I just realized that it's been less than 10 days since I read my first Yuri manga and I've already read 5 whole series, so maybe you all shouldn't feed my crippling Yuri addiction.
There's no turning back now, you've been infected.
Anyway, from the fairly "mainstream" ones you've read so far, I immediately think you're going to enjoy A Story About How She Grew Conscious of Her Childhood Friend. You ever read green yuri and wished for the same thing, but in a different colour? This is it. (Though a fair warning: the series is currently on haitus, both original and scanlation).
Talking about green, Fumiko's special green is a nice grounded historical one-shot of yearning in a time that was even less accepting than today is. (If you want more of the historical flair, give the anthology it's from a read.)
Frostbite, despite only being a two-parter, is one of the most impactful yuri stories I've read. It doesn't exactly have a fairytale ending; I don't think it is particularly depressing, but given that I positively thrive in misery it might be still rather rough on somebody with sensible tastes.
Our "Love" is Disgusting is series about finding various (un)healthy means to accept yourself and what you're into that is about to end soon. Oh, and on the topic of acceptance: The Private Report on My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is absolutely about coming to terms with your sexuality. Raw & unfiltered, and therefore not exactly pretty.
A couple tangentially related suggestions:
- A Delinquent, A Transfer Student, and Their Silly Little Game is something to try. It is set in school, but something about it gives me the feeling these are actual young adults and not the usual moèblob girls. Might be the artstyle.
- My Devilishly Sweet Girlfriend is technically supernatural, but in the end Lily's half-succubusness is just an instrument for the "coming to terms with the fact that sexual attraction is an expected part of a relationship and does not in any way lessens the meaning of your romantic bond"-arc.
- Iono the Fanatics is first and foremost a fun harem romp where Iono tries to pick up an absurd amount of women. But beneath that hides a surprisingly mature and heartfelt take on polyamory, with Iono's experience making her excellent at guiding her new lovers through the process of "Oh god I'm gay" and "can this polyamory thing really work out?"
- Lost by Sal Jiang. In case you want to suffer.
Also, since you're new, you might not have yet discovered the advanced search which is a very useful tool to find things exactly to your tastes. For example by filtering for Adult life and something like Aaaaaangst or Introspective
