No, I think that's actually a new idea. The usual idea is that Ibu (grumpy) likes Umi (MC).

We know that Ibu and Yosshi have known each other a long time; Yosshi uses Ibu's personal name (Yuuki), and they actually had a sweet birthday moment in Okinawa. But I think I've only read them as actual friends. Umi is the one that Ibu is repeatedly clingy/attentive to.

We've only seen Ibu look genuinely happy 3 times. Once when Umi was feeding her, once when showing off the sunglasses Umi gave her, and once when finally saying happy birthday to Yosshi.

I like to think that even though Ibu likes Umi, there's something between her and Yosshi that the both of them haven't really realized. But that's just because I'm a sucker for stories like that.

Anyway, let's hear it for ominous symbolism! Woohoo!

Honestly Wholesome is too light a tag of this one, we really need something like Sickly Sweet to get across how this series'll put you in a diabetic coma.

BTW: Her Kiss - Infectious Lust (renamed: “Her kiss, my libido twinkles”") just finished its second Kickstarter for physical versions of volume 2 (official English). Smashed it again like volume 1. I know it's late notice but that came to mind. We'll likely have one for the other volumes too.

Sort of off-topic, but that series lost its fan translators and never got new ones, right? I think it's up to like 17 releases on JP but only 12 or 13 in English and last updated years and years ago, yeah?

Yeah, pretty much. These official releases should eventually cover those chapters though. It also had a short live action adaptation.

One of the many things that I’ve liked about this series is that Umi’s feelings for Shou have always been about the “kissing and getting naked together” part of yuri from the very beginning. (As seen in her dream iin Chapter 4, for instance.)

Quite right. But it’s not like the lewd has to be some drawn-out epiphany (or off the table entirely)—Umi is definitely into it.

Of course Umi is into it. It’s Shou… Umi is neither literally dead nor an inanimate object, so of course she is crushing on Shou.

More troubling foreshadowing with a whole panta rhei spiel going on while Umi daydreams about a moment regarding her relationship...

It's funny, I was just thinking while opening this chapter that I've honestly found this series to be better described as Introspective than Wholesome.

Yep, Shou getting turned in by Umi has continued to be a thing. Their living situation being what it is, they seem to have very little 1:1 time to talk and figure things out, so good for Shou to communicate clearly that she does like being touched towards the end.

Shou’s hypersensitivity to light caresses and the message chair and also her lack of sensitivity to temperature are again very consistent with the idea that she is autistic and has different ways of processing sensations. Maybe Umi should try a firm hug and deep pressure instead?

I wonder if the mermaid plot will ever make a comeback

In addition to Shou's sensitivity issues with touching and temperature, this chapter drew attention to Shou's reaction to their male teacher and how his speaking volume is a bit overwhelming for her.
But of course Umi noticed. They're always watching each other.
