The show seems too lighthearted and action adventure-y to be end up a tragedy but that doesn't mean the odds are 0. Weirder things have happened. Madoka Magica Episode 3 ring any bells? And there's a pretty current trend of tragedy in anime recently. Or maybe it's just my Your Lie in April PTSD kicking in. Anyway, that's the reason us fans are worried.
At the very least subtext or yuri developments are not off the table either, and you can't say it's because production doesn't want to be inclusive since there are actually already 2 openly gay characters. Chisato having 2 dads isn't a joke.
