I thought Umi was in the kendo club in the manga.

In any case, flustered Umi and clueless Eli are always adorable, as are clueless Umi and flustered Eli.

She doesn't seem to be a member here, just welcome to come now and then if she wants due to being good at it.

Would she participate in the tournament were she not a proper member?

.... no, she's a member, she just spends more time doing school idol stuff.

In the manga, Umi resigned from the Kendo club to become an idol. In the anime, Umi remains part of the archery club and becomes an idol.

In all, Umi is trained in many forms of martial arts as well as things such as traditional dance and flower arrangement. While it is never truly depicted, she's from a rather traditional and likely quite wealthy family. Umi, Maki (clearly), Eli, and Kotori all seem to have affluent families.

Nico is the only one whose family isn't pretty affluent, really. Hanayo's family, at least in the SIDs, has a yard with a shed in it, there in Akihabara; Nozomi's parents both work and move a lot because of it, but I get the feeling that they're workaholics and neglectful, rather than needy. Honoka's family's manjuu shop is pretty big and well-established, if not constantly bustling. Rin is an unknown quantity, but seems solidly upper-middle class. Maki's family is obviously richer than any of them, but you don't get the picture that Umi's is too far behind — or at least, is not behind in terms of pride.

Nice.

Something I hadn't noticed before is how much Umi's relationship with her older sister is an undercurrent of this set of doujins. It's set up here, and then foregrounded in "As Our Lives Become Interwoven".

It's probably meant to highlight Umi's guileless nature (c.f. Old Maid) and the way that that outlook won't allow her to see hidden feelings — or motives — in anybody else.
