Except a lot of yaoi writers in the west at least are lesbians. I know several personally. Fans, too. And as a recent release from Morishima Akiko revealed, there are a lot of lesbian yaoi fans in Japan too.
So definitely [citation needed] on those stats of yours.
I'm not disagreeing with you on the yaoi lesbian writers, because I've noticed this as well. But it'd wager that there's a lot more ( percentage wise ) writers than they are lesbian readers. It's probably because the market for yaoi is much bigger than yuri BECAUSE of straight women buying power ( shoujo-like designs ). Of course having actual stats for this would be difficult since homosexuality in Japan is not really a subject to discuss.
On a side note I'd be really interested to know the market for Bara. Do women buy any of that? Or is that what gay men in Japan buy? I don't have much knowledge of it because western women who do scan yaoi almost completely ignore Bara. I'd assume women in Japan do the same?
The "stats" comment is about porn which you could easily google.
I don't think there's much concrete Data about something so niché as Yaoi/Yuri, and the small portion that there is, probably not easily accessible to most western readers.
Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoi_fandom There's a few things that support my claim ( I have not click links and ascertain how strong the data is ).
Edit 2 : Also, my little X is read by Y comparison was simplified to illustrate a tendency for the opposite sex to watch/read opposite same-sex content. I know that Lesbians are numerous in liking Yaoi.
Sounds logical but i don't know about that, most males i've met have no interest in yuri aside from the porn and most yuri are made by woman
Meanwhile i've met some gay dudes that has little to no interest in yaoi due to show afeminate most of the dudes look, my neighbour even got to the point that he's fine watching Gravitation because you can easily pretend that the pink haired dude is a girl, plus most yaoi are also made by woman
The fujoshi trend is much, muuuuuuch bigger than the... Whatever males liking yuri is called
Most guys don't really like yuri ( in fact they don't like romance aside panty shots and tits ALA shounen/seinen harem ) it's kind of pitiful but it's true. But when you do simple math that 50% male population and there's about 3-4% homosexuals ( now cut this in half )... At the end of the day, you're probably going to get more male readers because of sheer volume. I do also think there's more anime/manga readers that are male ( don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly sure it's still like this ). I guess this could be found via U.S. publishers.
Can't deny that fujoshi trend is way more impactful than male liking yuri. But it's also way more broader, yuri is so niché but fujoshis have a lot to read, Yaoi, BL-subtext. It's not restricted by demographic.

This 1000x just a quick question how many of you guys here other than me are actually lesbians?
Yeah i'm also a lesbian. Don't post often but new kase-san and how quickly are they supposed to just jump right into it i think the progression has been pretty realistic so far. I'm pretty socially awkward in situations like these anyways i can totally relate with yamada's insecurities so it doesn't bother me... also kase's boobs.... hot damn

Can we all just agree the boobs were amazing?
meh! I'm too irritated with Yamada-san's insecurities to really enjoy the story. I don't mind angst or even misunderstandings, but for cryin' out loud, every chapter? heaven forbid should their relationship progress to a sexual nature, poor Yamada will be boo hoo-ing all over the place. at that point, I'd suggest Kase-san walk away.
You sir have obviously no idea what being in your first relationship is like.....or understand Yamada's personality at all. Have you been reading Kase-San??!!
Also tbh, Kase is pretty mysterious....we don't really know her past all that well besides her previous relationships with girls and track lol (and awesome boobs).

Well I'm bisexual if that counts lol. I have only dated guys before, not that I don't want to date a girl, it's just that all the cute ones are straight :'( what a struggle

Pretty much

actually, yes I do remember. I too was nervous the first time I kissed a girl. my hands were sweaty and my heart kept racing. I was convinced I was going to pass out. that m'dear was in high school. and yes I was nervous and insecure. so yes, I do understand Yamada's personality. That however, does not change the fact that I think her insecurity parallizes her character in general and her relationship with Kase-san. BTW, please do not assume sir. miss will do nicely.

Ya know, since being on this forum, I never realized so many guys were into Yuri. just assumed most were women. oh the things you learn. :-)
kase-san ended? According to baka updates it is but I still see it as being published last issue.

Me!!! Never dated anyone yet though since the girls I have liked are straight . If I happen to go out with someone though pretty sure I would be insecure as hell the fact that I'm socially awkward, weird, and what if the girl I date is into guys now or worse, she likes a different girl since I'm not that much of a package. Therefore I understand how Yamada and Kase are scared of being dumped.
That however, does not change the fact that I think her insecurity parallizes her character in general and her relationship with Kase-san.
Haha actually if you read the raws Kase and Yamada get a little steamy

Oh my bad, didn't mean to offend! I kind of use sir, dude, and bro (bruh) on a same-gender basis lol.

iono man. i still think male yuri fans are the minority. thats been my experience so far anyway. i recommend stuff like Onani Master Kurosawa or Bitter Virgin and theyll go check it out, but they get skeptical when i recommend Octave or Aoi Hana and they see the yuri tag.
and its not really speaking for the US, but Comic Yuri Hime's readership is 70% female.

It probably depends on whether you're talking romantic yuri or porn yuri. The stuff in Yuri Hime or Hirare is the former, but stuff like what Asagi Ryuu does for instance seems to be firmly aimed at a mostly male audience.

none taken. I kinda do the same thing IRL. I've been making myself be more mindful not to do it since I have a bad habit of doing that at work.

Awesome chapter. So look forward to seeing them get more comfortable with each other. I really like these two :)
On the question--guy here. I have no idea why yuri isn't more popular with men (well, I guess they're afraid of "feelings" and like that, whatever). But I mean, straight guys and lesbian girls have this fundamental thing in common: We both like girls. Right? So it stands to reason that romance between girls is better than some shounen romance with some drip of a male lead getting in the way. How do more guys not see this simple obvious point?
Lovely chapter. I knew from the beginning this would be great--Takashima Hiromi's previous manga wasn't yuri, but it was so cute and sweet that it was obvious she'd be a great fit for yuri manga.

IMHO, it's because it involves romance and that is not a "manly" thing. no sex? no interest which I believe others have mentioned in previous posts. but I admit, I'm not a guy, so mileage may vary. maybe guys really are into romance.
so guys, are men into romance? or only sex?

Well, I prefer having both. For some reason sex stuff without the characters loving each other really bothers me... I just can't get into it. And the ones I most prefer have a nice mix of both along with sweet fluffyness and flirtyness. It's nice, makes me feel nice, puts me in a good mood, I like that.

A general reply to the on-going conversation:
Main problem could be that the yuri guys get exposed to at first is usually the animes (aside from many fan-service yuri scene) which are mostly soap opera quality dramas. And when they ask around or get something suggested it is the same stuff, I watched (more like tried to watch) the animes and read the mangas ppl suggested, none of those worked for me. It's probably better to give em something different, like say Sakura Trick, it was different, easygoing, couples getting together early, it was full of sweetness, and cuteness. Dudes I know found themselves surprised cuz they liked it.
I guess most like to self-insert themselves into the role of the male character, hence why male characters in romance are quite dull, these characters seem to be just "pants" for the male audience to wear (popular Twilight review reference!). Guess self-insertion is more of a thing with porn, its always a generic male character with short black hair who you almost never see through the whole thing, except for his penis which is almost always present...
Personally I find that guyxgirl romance is waaaay too samey, it is all the same experience to me. I was never into romance all that much, the only part of romance I like is where the typical romance stories end: Where the characters get together... Thats where I usually find myself the most entertained, so it's usually 1 or 2 episodes of what I like when its anime (being generous there, most just instantly end there). I found this out with Mysterious X Girlfriend cuz they get together there in ep1, tho I wish it wasn't so fucking weird!!!... I noticed that many yuri mangas+doujins have characters get together early or already together, guess that is why I am here, yuri hits me in the right spot +girls are cute... put 2 girls in love with each other and the cuteness is multiplied x2.
Well, in the end I might just be part of the minority with my really specific tastes and not know what I am talking about when trying to speak for males in general about the subject.
OH GOD! WALL OF TEXT! Thought I was gonna type like 2 short paragraphs when I started...

Ok since the topic is getting pretty big I might as well give my own opinion.
I think one of the reasons why a lot of people don't like or care about yuri is the same problem that has been going on for such a long time people are afraid or not attached to the unknown and the market is over saturated by malexfemale hollywood "romance" which I love to call fake romance, Men are raised to not really care about anything not "manly" and girls are brainwashed by the fake romance.
hell I used to be a homofobic because of bad influence and ignorance, one of my relatives even yucks when there's a girlxgirl kiss on a movie.
I don't like malexfemale at all, I don't really mind yaoi and I love yuri. I can't remember the exact reason or when it clicked on my brain but the more I watched and read the more attached I got. So that said I think is part life experiences and part been born this way. (I've NEVER seen a single malexfemale relationship that works in real life)
I'm actually having trouble talking about the subject with my best friend cuz I don't really know what he'll think I want to give him a taste of the awesomeness of yuri but when I talk about romance in anime he always mentions generic shonen and when I said I cried watching madoka his answer: "are there any guys? cuz I only see girls so why did you cry?".(I thought the subtext might work)
well in the end not everyone is the same so this is just my opinion. Oh and good luck to all the girls here I know it must be REALLY difficult to find a perfect girl who likes you(its already hard for good men)
oh I'm not manly...at all if you can't tell by my posts XD ah I wish I was a girl I could have found my princess (hopefully)
wow that was a lot of text lol

I've looked for these, but since I can't read Japanese sadly, it makes it hard to navigate/know what to search for. Can you give me any tips for where I might find them?
The chapters are found on this website.

Thank you very much for that! :)
so guys, are men into romance? or only sex?
Being a guy, quite honestly I do practically nothing with my free time but read romance manga. Whether it be het or yuri, I love both. I have a manga reader on my tablet and basically do a continuous search for romance manga :) Though it's always nice to see "romantic sex" :) You know, sex that means something and not just for the sake of having sex.
I'm a guy and I can say that all of the other guys I know don't read yuri or romance in general they only read shounen

thats pretty much the same for me only i also read some yaoi,shounen-ai and crossdressing stuff like prunus girl or sazanami cherry
I generally don't like too much and too graphic sex in a romance story may it be yuri yaoi or het
I have another question that's off-topic for the lesbians here. I've been thinking about this for awhile but there's no real forums I'm a part of to ask. But do you think you go faster in your relationships (like having sex faster) than a traditional straight relationship would? Since when I had my boyfriend we started dating when we were 16 and I told him to wait to have sex with me till I was 21 (he couldn't wait we broke up at 18). And when I started dating my girlfriend we got frisky a lot faster like within the first 6 months.
I know it's different for every relationship and I might just be a prude. But I felt like giving to my boyfriend would make me a slut or something like listening to societies pressure but with my girlfriend I didn't worry about that at all. And I see that in yuri (well can yuri relate to real life?) that they get to bed pretty fast compared to all the wooing in het romance. So are your inhibitions less than what you would expect of a straight relationship?
