I was a child who said "r" and "l" as "w". So "lion" and "Ryan" were both "wian". But just because you can't pronounce the difference between two syllables doesn't mean you can't distinguish them.

And Alpaca-chan is really adorable, along with all the feline friends too of course. And foxes... and.. well gosh all of them are adorable! Small wonder I love the show and these mangas too.

The English "r" is a particularly hard phoneme to pronounce, to the point that it's quite normal for a native English speaker to have trouble with it up to 9 years old.

There was a girl in my class in elementary school who had trouble with it until about age 7 or 8. That’s About the oldest I’ve seen for that personally, but it does happen.

As someone who has worked with children of varying ages, I can confirm that this does happen, and it is as adorable as it seems.
