Goes with the whole "harem" mating system they have going - for a new pride male the offspring of the deposed one are an unwanted burden at best, and more practically nursing females with cubs won't be going into heat again until those grow up thus limiting his procreative opportunities.
Solution obvious, brutal.
Males in solitary species may kill infant conspecifics for the latter reason too, bears are a well-known example (which is one reason why their cubs are such good climbers; the far heavier adult males cannot follow them to treetops). Don't think it's very common among felines though?
...all of which kinda makes you appreciate more the species that "pair-bond" at least until the kids have grown up, doesn't it?
