@Utoptia, I sure do like mecha anime. Not sure why, but I do. :P
Edit: Probably because a lot of them have to do with space!
I also like the L in my name that you keep missing. :P

Oh shit, an edit in RE:0096 that was actually well done? I'll be
Yeah, I was really worried how they were gonna do this. I love the song and since it wouldn't be at the end, I thought they would drop it completely. I was really happy with how it turned out.

There's no way they'd do this, that would require the effort to edit the music out
I ain't following RE:0096 'cause i already watched the OVAs to death so i don't know how the episodes are being handled past the third one, but i'll never forget how heartbreaking bad the editing transition from the first OVA to the second was handled, jesus christ

They're consistently bad. Episodes also always end like at the worst moment and sometimes the commercial breaks are bad too. I wish they added an eyecatch.
I'm watching RE:0096 because my friend is watching it so I'm following it along with him.
@Utoptia well, I'm trying to do my best :P
Azumanga Daioh had a pretty nifty opening as well.
@Utoptia Well, you're not the only one :P Rina will never know how many times I had to quickly edit my posts so to switch "Tina" to "Rina" (unless she reads this post).

I forgive you (/◕ヮ◕)
Well up until now I never realized there was a " L " In Zuljin's name so .-. Guess I'll apologize once again __(._.)_

Hail Ainz Ooal Gown!
Still waiting for season 2 to be announced, even if Madhouse rarely makes S2s...but, they made S2 of Mahouka so there's still KIBOU.
I really hope someone gets what the KIBOU references...

My entry anime was Star Blazers with an honourable mention to Astroboy, which weirdly was an English translation of the French translation.
First original-language anime was this mess which honestly doesn't make any more sense in English.
@ Nezchan
Oh, I could probably handle Stranger Things. It's just where my head's at right now I'm not actually watching much of anything.
Ah, I see. I have such periods as well sometimes. But I'm kinda on a roll with TV shows lately. ^^
If you ever get the chance to watch it, I'd really like to hear your opinion about it since you also have a thing for the 80s... I'm really curious. Maybe I'm just delusional about that show, I don*t know... ;)
@ ZuljinRaynor
Sorry for the late reply but I was too occupied last night ;) so I didn't really read everything that was posted...
Don't worry, never thought you were a hateful person ^^
@ Suosiki
Wow, I have never before heard of some of the movies you mentioned yesterday... Interesting... Maybe I'll check some of them out. Especially since you said that you liked „fucked-up and difficult“ movies ^^b
I'll put 'em on my list!
@ Utoptia
Right, Mulholland Drive... you mentioned it a few times before...
Kinda makes me wanna watch it again. It's been a while...
I always liked it. But never considered it a favorite...
But Land of the Dead is a great zombie movie. I always liked that the zombies are pretty smart in that one.
@ Rina
Regarding your „entry anime“ question:
If you don't count the shows they aired on kid's TV in a lot of countries; for me it was Cowboy Bebop and The Vision of Escaflowne. I watched a lot of MTV back in the day and someday they decided to show some anime. Loved them both! And more followed later on...
Transit Girls... sounds interesting...
@ Blackkitty
Well... by now I think you've learned that I like and also love many things...
But I don' get THAT kind of feeling a lot. And when I do, I just wanna savor every moment of it.
That's also one of the reasons my sleeping schedule is mostly a mess. Because when I feel like that I won't go to sleep for as long as I can – 'cause you never know if you'll still feel like that the next day. Mostly not unfortunately...
I always have the most intense experiences in the middle of the night ^^
I'm usually more sensitive when everything around me is quiet and I feel like I'm the only person left on this planet. It sets me free, I guess. It's pretty addictive. And when you combine it with something you love (like music, a good story, a movie, or writing) it gets even better.
I really am addicted to feelings ^^ It's all about the pleasure to me. If I can't feel it, I'm not interested ;)
What was it that made you feel that way? You mentioned that it's been years...
@Rina: my first Japanese anime was one of the Doraemon films, iirc. My parents used to take me on trips to Little Tokyo, and we'd watch an English subbed movie at the big international theatre in the Japanese shopping mall.
I didn't really start watching anime until the late nineties. VHS was still around... I watched things like Tenchi Muyo, Kimagure Orange Road, Escaflowne, EVA, along with some things on the Sci-fi channel like Iria: Zeiram the animation (which I still like to this day) or Armitage 3. I was a huge weeb for a few years, then lost interest in anime for a few more years, then got back into it through comedies like Azumanga Daioh. Which was also my gateway to yuri. ^^ But there wasn't really one title that made me a fan, just repeated exposure to anime over a long period of time.

I swear, Im like the only person on the earth that doesn't have a Twitter account >.>
@Galich
late response, but you are not alone. i refuse to join FB or twitter. mostly because it gives busy body family and friends a reason to bug me but also because i am convinced that in their quest to unite the world [i'm mostly talking @FB here], they have 1.) trained people to embrace distraction and 2.) have collectively created a culture of 'all about me' that don't realize they are so. (*lol* funny how i'm griping about being self-centered/self-absorbed when i'm writing about my own opinions)

i originally posted this question in the Heartbreak discussion, but i thought it might be more appropriate in this discussion. that said...
wrt yuri/shoujo-ai stories, i realize that high school settings are a prevalent theme in the genre, but i wonder why more authors do not create stories with older characters that aren't college-aged or 20-something y/o. Mangaka like Morishima Akiko and Takamiya Jin are somewhat exceptions because they have released books that have more adult characters discussing adult themes (while i would argue that in Jin's case, she's more tethered to the school girl setting). Long story short, do mangaka rehash the high school/college theme because they figure it's an easy sell, because that's what most people expect and might find anything that is "other" off-putting, or because the genre is slowly maturing and embracing acceptance of lesbianism? and if it is slowly maturing, do any of you think there will be a new yurinaissance where the majority of new manga and anime produced foregoes old tropes and themes for the "other"?

Would add Amano Shuninta, Yamaji Ebine and Akiyama Haru too (well, in octave character aren't old, but it's really focused on adult life so..). EDIT : And Nishi Uko, how could I forget Nishi-sensei.
I don't get why most of yuri works have high-school setting either, tho it might be because as you said, it sells, and that's what japanese like. Non-japanese yuri manga tend to have rather a college or an adult life setting (like, FF, WDTFS, sunshine and bright star, mistress story..).
As far as I can tell, Japanse aren't usually fond of "deep" and too mature plot. That'd explain why anime like EVA or cowboy bebop were a flop.
I'm hoping for more Adult life
too. That said, a high school setting doens't mean that it can't be deep and mature. Let's take for example my favorite yuri manga.
On the other hand, that's the rarity of these adult life yuri manga that makes them this enjoyable, at least from my point of view. I wouldn't like every story to be like this or like that, but I love these two yuri.
That said, I really hope we'll have more post-highschool yuri ... and more yuri aswell !

Adult characters is why Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is my favorite Persona game.
On Twitter I follow Japanese mangakas and western video game developers with a touch of e-sports... and my one friend who posts there when he's super busy.
Facebook I use to talk to like two friends from college lol.
Tbh, I don't really think I'll enjoy reading yuri works as much if every one of them focuses on adult issues and what not. I mean, it's good to have works that tackle these issues but much of the allure of yuri works for me comes from the fact that it doesn't place overt emphasis such issues: it's fluffy, idealized, light, themes that quite honestly I'd prefer seeing more over realism. And personally, I think the whole highschool setting works because it's the stage in life where almost everyone can relate to; actual highschool students can relate to the feeling of finding that "first love", while adults can escape from the clutches of working life - which iirc, is particularly stressful in Japan.
On a separate note though, nowadays I find myself having so little time that I rarely ever read yuri manga that are long series. At this point, I am more satisfied with reading oneshots such as the works from Mira because they provide just a right mix of fluffiness and risque content. It's just, I don't have that much energy to become time invested into a long series like I used to and oneshots or shorter works are able to deliver the key elements that I look for in a yuri work without requiring the time investment.
And on the topic of Mira's works, this post that I wrote about her last year still applies this year, actually, I don't think there will be any other mangaka that will come close to matching her works in a while imo.
and yes that is my Tumblr, I do anime posts weekly if something interests me that particular season and reblog 3 yuri pictures everyday ^ o ^ currently only writing on Ange Vierge until Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars resume

I don't mind a the existence of more high school yuri. I am fine with more of it. I just have a hard time relating to high school stuff now that I am older and that's been a long time ago now. Yeah, I lived it and I remember stuff, but now what's on my mind is dealing with bills, rent, car payments, work, etc. I would like more stuff with characters who are dealing with stuff I am dealing with. :P
Strangely, I still have time for long series in addition to one shots... but that may be because I don't go out (so I can play Love Live School Idol Festival lol).
^ Well, everyone has their own preference I guess. I personally wouldn't enjoy reading things that go reflect what I am going through IRL; I mean, I can see merit in such a thing and there's KIBOU* to be gotten from seeing others do well in similar contexts and situations, but I personally prefer escapism as a solution instead ^ ^"
And I rarely go out too actually lol, but my time is very mostly split thin between playing games, watching anime, writing fanfics for my girlfriend to read and spending time with her at night...so yeah, not that much time invest into longer series.
*I lost a bet with a friend regarding Danganronpa, now I've to replace "hope" with KIBOU whenever I mention it for the next week. Not really enforced, but it's amusing so why not

I'm not familiar with Akiyama Haru. I will look for their work on here.
Yes, how could you forget Nishi-sensei! If I were offered the chance to intern or be her assistant for a year with no pay, i'd do it in a heartbeat. her style and the simplicity of her stories are amazing. i know we each have our favs, but stories like "To Meet" are... *ahem* sorry for all the fangirl fawning there.
As far as I can tell, Japanse aren't usually fond of "deep" and too mature plot. That'd explain why anime like EVA or cowboy bebop were a flop.
Did not realize they were considered flops in Japan. IMO Bebop is a cult classic and genius for when it came out. I'm also of the opinion its OST is brilliant and doesn't have a single bad track when you omit the talking parts.
I'm hoping for more
Adult life

boy oh boy i have not read Pieta in a while. Thanks for mentioning it. totally need to reread. Also, Private Report looks interesting. I cannot say i completely connect with the main character, but i sympathize with her. it looks like a interesting read. Again thanks for listing it.
EDIT: i see this was recently released but somehow missed it.
@Rina
I understand your point about escapism and like you said, we each have our own prefences. I suppose I'm in the same camp with Zuljin where I'd like to read more stories about people like me dealing with similar issues (movies like "This is 40" and "It's in the Water" come to mind). I also wish there were more yuri manga that are of the sci-fi/fantasy variety. That, of course, wouldn't necessarily have anything to do with or be based in a high school/college settings.
BTW, it's cool you write fanfic. yes or no, do you post on any fanfic sites (i'm not asking where for privacy reasons),? also, are your stories based on TV shows/movies or are they original content?

I actually don't post them anywhere ^ ^" the only person that I share them with is my gf since she's the reason I got into writing, usually they're based on yuri pairings in anime that we're both watching, but I do occasionally write other fanfics for anime that I watched alone, just to add a bit of closure in a way ^ - ^
@ ciega
Regarding your question; I think there are many reasons why the high school setting is so popular in yuri manga.
First of all it might have all started with Maria-sama ga miteru. That's kinda like the godfather of modern yuri stories. ^^
The real focus on the high school setting started after that, I think.
2) In Japan showing interest in the same gender is a kids and teenage thing. That's what a lot of people believe. So for young girls to show interest in each other and have first love experiences with each other is a natural thing and it can be considered practice for a „real“ relationship later (with a man, of course) ^^
This leads to two things:
a) Sad yuri stories that end with the couple breaking up at the end of high school that we all love so much ;) And in general a lot of school focused stories.
b) It also gave authors an excuse to depict yuri more easily. Because in that stage of life it's all natural. Nothing wrong with showing that. That helped a lot, I'm sure, when yuri didn't have a lot of support in the industry. Because like that you could still get away with it.
3) In recent years, and talking about more than a decade now, the vast majority of manga and anime focuses on kids and teenagers... That's become the ultimate thing unfortunately...
Just take a look around and try to count the mainstream stories that focus on adults... Having a hard time finding any...? Good. Then welcome to the club! ^^
If you take a look at the 90s and before that; there were far more (not only, of course, but faaaar more) stories with adults than nowadays... I really miss those times... Stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Devil Lady, Hellsing, Harlock, Perfect Blue, Jin-Roh, Bubblegum Crisis, AD Police, Gunsmith Cats, Berserk, Armitage, Appleseed... like a lot of popular things focused on adults.
Try to make a list past 2005... I'm pretty sure it'll become really short.
So that's a general problem, not just with yuri.
I hope that it's slowly starting to change again... But I'm not really convinced yet...
4) The majority of people reading manga are kids, young adults and perverts with a general and unhealthy interest in everything “young” (just like Hollywood) ^^
And maybe 5) as well:
High School is a time of freedom, fun and choice! That's where it all starts. You still have the whole world to conquer! ;)
And even for everyone past that age it's still a nice stage to think back to... There's a lot of nostalgia coming along with it...
