@Galich
That sounds hard. In my country, students who study Law should get at least 7.5 in IELTS, and others should get at least 6.5. However, English Language Test is not compulsory, it's just for an international recognition.

My avatar is from a manga called Last Game. She is an MC.

Oh, the CAE exam isn't mandatory itself for the uni. You do need to pass a mandatory exam from English (roughtly 5.5) in order to get into any uni, and "advanced" English (B2/6.5) for history/law/language studies. However, if you want to go study an eastern language like me and actually visit China/Japan as part of the studies, CAE is pretty much mandatory.

Also, looking at your post, are IQ tests an actual thing when applying for a uni in your country? That is.. something completly different from my country.

Just applied for the uni I want to get. 18 Euros per a degree, applied for 4. We'll see how I do. The worst part? You first pay to apply for a uni, and THEN you get to find out the results of your final exam, so it's totally normal to pay and then fail the finals. I'm dying from stress here, need to know if I managed to get into my favoured degree~~

Hope I don't sound like someone who is barely able to get 6 in IELTS; I'm still very touchy when it comes to my lingual skills.

@Anon Well, since I feel jealous of German music, I'll post the only well known piece from my country.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yh2InVsFag

I think I'm doing it wrong.

60s music? Not my niche, but although what comes to my mind is Animals, The Doors, Credence Sweetwater Revival and Jimmy Hendrix. Pretty much main stream, since the 60s and early 70s were not a fun time in my country.

@Nez Well, that makes it a unique point of view then. Out of sheer curiosity, were the 80s as wild in Canada as much as they were in the US?

@ Nezchan

Little pieces of art those music videos... (^_^)b
But I remember reading some folks (mostly musicians probably) complaining about that exactly. Saying that it wasn't really about the music anymore. More like short movies with music in the background. People just don't like change, I guess ^^

I always loved Madonna - Like a Prayer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftXHKfbXeBM

A-HA – Take on me (but we already covered that one)

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWJE0x7T4Q

And Queen - I want to break free (of course)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEKVLjXO2Fk

I would include Tom Petty – „Don't come around here no more“ as well but I already posted that...

And OMG I adore that Bonnie Tyler song!
I listen to that song whenever I get a little too emotinal and drippy...
Every now and then whenever I fall apart... ;)
That husky voice... sigh... ^^

Pretty similar, really. We had a lot of bands running around doing really cool stuff, although Parachute Club notwithstanding they largely came off a lot less bubblegum.

So lessee...

Loverboy - Turn Me Loose
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnHm4ro_l8s

Northern Pikes - She Ain't Pretty
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUT4sS0lsss

Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ny-p7AnBL8

Haywire - Dance Desire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhAK0WYsELI

Payolas - Eyes Of a Stranger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C_fVnE3xHY

For contrast:
Parachute Club - Rise Up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcC-SbcihKI

Bonus:
Doug and the Slugs - Who Knows How To Make Love Stay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqS72pTvN04

Although admittedly I like Day By Day better.

There can only be one Sledgehammer,

Dubstep... yeah... but it wasn't really pioneering. It wasn't all new. It was more of a mixture of things that already existed. So not really groundbreaking.
Don't know if we'll ever get a chance to experience something like that again...

Well, yeah. I guess that's just how time works. There's only so much groundbreaking stuff you can do with music. Guess I'm lucky that I'm one of those guys that like, found his favorite genre already so anything potentially groundbreaking is probably not gonna be all that interesting to me anyways. I can definitely understand people wanting something new though.

There are much more deserving German bands >__>

and

Kraftwerk – yes! One of the few German bands I really like.

Honestly, gotta agree with Anon here. There definitely are some good german bands and some of them definitely deserve some international recognition (I'm just gonna throw in the Beatsteaks in here, at least when I still listened to them like 5 years ago (in like, Jane Became Insane that yaoi baiting though and Cut Off The Top times) but in the whole scheme of things, there are only a few ones that are really good. Obligatory "In my opinion".

Funnily enough, I;ve mentioned Die Toten Hosen before in this thread. I got to know them from.. an American (I'm a Polish man myself, at the very least according to my ID). In spite of my 3 years of studying German, the only line from their songs that I know is "Hier kommt Alex". Switched to Russian as soon as I had the choice.

I never really followed them because I was preoccupied with being a Die Ärzte fanboy but there was a time in which I listened to Zehn kleine Jägermeister like, constantly. It's pretty much the only song I remember from them, though I remember "Hier kommt Alex" at least by name. Pretty sure I still have the Jägermeister single lying around here somewhere.

As for my country,

An international recognition I mentioned (7.5 in IELTS for students majoring in Law, and 6.5 for students majoring in other study programs) is for students who want to go study abroad.

If you apply for Computer Sciences, Mathematics or Physics, IQ tests are usually included in your Mathematics test. However, it depends on private universities themselves.

To graduate high school you have to go through three examinations, first semester's exam, second semester's exam, and national high school's exam. The same 10 subjects for those three exams. Your overall result of high school exams decide whether you can be accepted into Government Universities (in which considered as an honor). Usually, during waiting for results released, students take uni entrance exams provided by many private universities. Taking those uni entrance exams may be just a waste of time and money, but everyone do it anyway.

As for national high school exam, students are separated by zones/provinces. For each zone, there may be thousands of students whose names are sorted (A-Z) are divided into classrooms. and with already assigned seat numbers. You take exams in a completely new environment (i.e. in an unfamiliar school, with strangers both students and inspectors.) Do you guys have this kind of high school exam?

@adyatma16 Out of sheer curiosity, where are you from? Well, there are quite a few events in my country (thankfully the biggest ones are held in my city), but they never go past 5k visitors.

Personally, I'm just waiting until contemporary music and culture become oldschool, just to see how the newer generations will view it with nostalgia. Either that, or we'll end up like the second half of the 90s (not implying that there was no good music in that period, just the fact that this era.. isn't as much sought after, as the early 90s etc.).

I'm from Indonesia, last year the visitors up to 55k,they have guest some singer in anime so its reasonable

yes I hope that to happen, newer singer this day is not a good as 90s singer, they now just produce some random lyric with some random music, i even told my friends thay their taste is completely trash (i got irritated from my neighbor for playing music in midnight) i wish that will end soon

In my case:
Mathematics (High school Mathematics IQ test) x 2.5
General knowledge x 1
English x 1

1 point for correct answer
0 for incorrect answer (No reason to leave any question unanswered. :D)

I'm suck at mathematics so i just answer one question (possibility problem) manage to answer all English (I'm not sure with my grammar) and IQ test (I'm confident in this) thats how i answer my exam

you pass IELTS?, if so can you tell me how to get good grade in IELTS?

Rewriting this post, since I've closed the tab with almost entirely finished one a few hours ago. [Saying this as a Polish man] Basically, we have no entrance exams, just final exams (from basic Polish, basic English and math). The rest are not mandatory, like biology, philosophy, chemistry etc. For what I had to pick, I went with advanced English, advanced Polish and history (applying to study foreign languages). That's all you need, then you apply for a uni (the private ones are garbage) and only THEN you get to know the results. We used to have entrance exams, but they were taken off in the 90s. Also, our highschool exams are held at schools, with teachers from different highschools. Which means that you get random students from your school, but a completely random teacher to guard ya.

Your system sounds really convoluted than mine. Just final exam + an entrance exams would do, although writing under those conditions of not knowing anyone near ya can be a bit problematic. From those administrative divions that you've told me about, it occured to me that you're probably from a quite densely populated country. Where are ya from?

As far as highschools are concerned, what you study is bound to the class you're a part of. I was in a history/Polish/English class, plus had to mandatory 2nd language (Russian) and another subject (Latin). The downside of this system is that you cannot just select your subjects at will like in Scandinavian countries.

That CAE is not mandatory to apply for a uni, but if I want courses abroad during the uni years, it really comes in handy. The level of English exams here are B2, which is roughtly 6 for basic English, and 7 - 7,5 for advanced English. Basically, nothing too hard.

Other than those, my favorite song is probably System of a Down - Chop Suey.

High school in my country is harder than college. You can't play around during your last high school year.Taking ten tests within two days and a half is not easy. Every year, there's around 30% of students who couldn't make it. There's no second exam, and as class attendance is mandatory, you repeat that one year if you fail. You don't need to pass every single one, all you need is to get at least 50% of total score. But the thing is that maths = 125 points, physics = 75, geology = 30, etc. However, there was a special case last year; our government allowed a second exam for the very first time in history because 75% of students failed as they couldn't adapt to a rushly updated educational system.

Not disappointed at all. I said I listen to everything as long as it's just good. Gotta admit though I never really concerned myself with Rap and Hip Hop but those weren't bad at all.
I listened to every song to the end. Especially liked The Rugged Man - Uncommon Valor (that's some brutal stuff... but true unfortunately...gave me goosebumps, man...), Marco Polo – Nostalgia and Royce da 5'9 – Boom.

Rap is probably more real than all of that superficial Synthpop stuff we posted ^^
I'm just a real sucker for that sometimes...

And I'm with Royce here when he said that Rap now is a circus of clowns ;)
At least the stuff they show on tv most of the time. Like this:

Stuff like that is not much to my liking, I admit it.
However, I am well aware that there is a lot more to Rap than just that. And you proved it.

Well, that was a complete miss on my part then >.> I don't remember my reasoning behind that statement, perhaps I should stop posting here forever half asleep after taking my sleeping pills. Sorry about that. To make it up, I'm replying having just woken up from a nap, reversing that logic it should be making me sharper. Either that, or I'm hopeless.

Those stats are insane. Poland has a strict educational system, but from what I read just now.. I'm just flabbergasted. 70% of all students failed? I know that well educated citizens are mandatory in this date and age, but that's an overkill.

Our exams.. well, you need to pass all of them, but if you fail those, you can rewrite only one a few months later. Of course, this really decreases your chance of getting a decent uni..

We don't have any colleges in here, just primary school (6 years) -> secondary school (3 years -> high school 3 years -> 3 years for a bachelor's degree (completely useless on its own) -> additional 2 for a master's degree -> Finished the main course of studying -> PhD for the best/the richest students, the time it takes depands on the person.

All private schools excluding the unis are much better than state owned ones, provided that you have the money. Same goes with.. church connected schools. Both my primary and secondary schools were a playground for bullies, thankfully I've managed to get away to a very good highschool. As I said before, private unis are garbage.

Actually, you've scared me crapless. You see, last year's failure rate was 27%, and since then the government's enacted some pretty rushed update to the educational system.. And I'll be getting my results tomorrow.. I think you can see where I'm going with this. Then again, the only results you get instantly are from oral Polish and English, and I've done pretty decently on both of those (100% and 94% respectively), but those are utterly useless when applying for a uni. Plus that English oral was nonsense, I swear, my examinator spoke worse English than mine, pronouncing "studying abroad" as "study -ying a-brooch". Funnily enough, my friend who's lived in Australia for 3 years got less % than I did, so I might be onto something.

How do colleges look like in your country? Also, judging by your messages, you're studying abroad, right?

@Galich Thank you! now you know someone, who tries DELF for the second time xD

Applying papers for Chinese, Japanese, Swedish and history. Gonna select one from the list, depending on what I manage to get into (hardest to actually be selected/the most desired by me is Chinese, history's last). I was planning on studying applied linguistics, but it would have to be a combination of Russian and English, and I can take on both of those languages in my spare time (or at the very least I want to believe so). The degrees I'm taking are actual language studies from the very beginning with history and culture thrown into the mix, plus if I get to study Japanese/Chinese at the Uni I want to study at (there's only 2 in the entire country that have those degrees) I'll still have to choose a suplementary second eastern language: Korean, Japanese or Chinese, so I'll be getting a bit more thrown into the mix. I was also considering just flat out studying oriental cultures, but it's not really a very good degree. With that CAE, my chances of spending a year in Japan/China sponsored by the uni are better.

Well, the thing about that CAE exam is fact that I was prepared privately (by a tutor) for it, not by any school, which means I wasn't able to skip a single year. I need to thank my father for forcing me into this (he's a translator by trade), since my English is decent enough.

All of that 80s stuff yesterday made me remember this:

… anyone...?
It's sooo damn hip to be square! (^_-)b

And also:

@ Everyone who likes Synth-stuff:

Does anyone here know or like this (fairly) new synthesizer stuff that's been floating around?

Not a huge fan of that movie. Ironically enough, I'm not even a huge fan of films/TV, last time I was watching a non-documentary film was when the 6th season of Dexter was recent. I cannot sit through a video/movie longer than 30 minutes, but I can read for more than 7 hours per day if I'm bored. Well, ain't ADD fun.

Recent synth stuff? That's a very loose term. Well, since I don't think that Giorgio Moroder's cameo on one of Daft Punk's songs counts and not counting old synth artists recording inferior albums Cough I'm looking at you New Order *Cough*Kavinsky comes to mind (the one that you've sent) plus Trevor Something. It's a bit on the darker end, so I'm not sure if you'll enjoy it.

Speaking of that, a few week's ago a new Visual Novel has been released by a developer team from Venezuela called VA-11 HALL-A. While it has a few issues here and there, the soundtrack was something I really loved about it. It has an 80s vibe to it; I'll just leave two links to it and run away.

Yet another wall of text here. I swear, I should just stop posting in this topic, but the discussion here is just too interesting. Huge thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread.

@Galich
Well, they grew up in Poland (my parents were born late 50s). :p We all moved to the US in '93. (I'll actually continue more on this below if interested).

@Anon99
I know more but I don't know the titles. It's all oldish Polish stuff. We had a few cassette tapes and for like 8 years we went to Polish school on Saturdays so my parents would play it in the car.

This is the Polish school I went to... I think? http://www.psdholyrosary.com/ I guess they changed the name after the Pope died (also no English page) at some point. I know my mom said that one of the teachers really wanted to have it changed to John Paul II so I guess it happened eventually. It used to be "Kazimierza Pułaskiego." The site says it was founded in 2010 which is strange since went there before 2010 (I think I went 2001-2008? Or was it 2000-2007? I don't remember.) It was supposed to prep us for some language exam at NYU but the one they made us take was some 12 credit one but then when I applied for colleges they were like yeah this isn't enough, you need the 16 credit one so you need to take a bridge exam for 4 more credits and it was like whatever.

As you might be able to tell, it was at/next to a church, and they were borrowing rooms from the church there. At one point the church wanted everyone to say some sort of prayer (I have no idea what it was lol) and I just stood there like "uhhhhhhhhh," and one of the kids was like "you don't know the words?" That lasted maybe like a day or two and we didn't have to do that again. I was one of the best students in the school (I always behaved in school, which led to bullying in elementary school and middle school, so you know even though I don't want to be there in my Saturday, I'm not going to waste that time screwing around like everyone else did... plus Polish history is interesting) so I don't think they wanted me to leave over something like that.

Also there were some masses we had to go to, unfortunately, and I could never last any of them. I would just either stay seated but at one point I just started hanging around in the back. I just can't take Polish Roman Catholic masses physically. The way they sing song everything made my head spin.

Those were some interesting times. Looking back I'm glad I went to help improve my Polish (when we left Poland I was like not even three so I knew very little) even though it was like good bye half of Saturday. Classes were like 3 hours and driving was like 45 minutes one way.

@Anon99 very stupid death, indeed..

suspicious?! why? for one oxen can't catch " the mad cow disease" and they are more resistant to other diseases as well. and the nutritious characteristics are better than those of other foods. but I'm not a specialist and I'm lazy right now... so google it xD
oh, nothing really! you are just fine as you are. maybe you could try being less suspicious, you might miss on some delicious/healthy yogurt... if you don't want it, give it back - I will enjoy it with some berries on top ^^
aren't we all a bit oxymoronic sometimes :)
Thanks :) I don't know..I hope I won't fail this time, otherwise I will go hide somewhere.. oh, danger is everywhere nowadays, just as stupidity is.
end up like you? so what!
