I think the fact that this is an anime is the source of 99% of the drama. Manga and novels can appeal to a comparatively small target audience (say, lesbians) and still be profitable, but anime is much more expensive. People just aren't really used to anime with original stories where the (potential) yuri would a major focus, so they assume it's too good to be true. From a thematic perspective I think it was pretty clear already that a het ending wouldn't make much sense, but a lot of people just don't pay attention to that. In that way I find the response to the show exaggerated but not unexpected. I think people should be allowed to enjoy art whether they are seriously analyzing it or not, but its also pretty fucked up to judge the show for things you don't even know are true. At this point I think I'd be happy with any (reasonable) direction the show takes. It's already pretty exceptional as it is.
